How can I figure out what my password is and keep it unlocked? Every time I do a system update, it requires the password and sends me into cyber trouble with the remember my keychain access, requiring it every time I log in. A real hassle to be avoided
How can I find out what my password on the computer is? I had to change it due to my teenagers helping themselves, and now every time there is a system update, I have to have the password, which I cannot remember or find. It then wants it every time I log in and pops up Key Chain Access as well. Very annoying. I do not have the disc to reload it and fear I would loose everything on my computer as there is also trouble with the back up system. Too many issues and not enough solutions. Why not? You need your system dvds to troubleshoot & to reset/change passwords in view of your current OS listed in your profile.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

When selecting passwords, make sure it's one that you will NEVER forget AND no one else can figure out.
Old school--- > Print it out & keep in a safe place. A place that ONLY you know about AND never forget.
New school---> Get a password manager utility. Highly recommend 1Password which is shareware. Do a Google search for free password managers.

One way is to remove all apps and then reinstall a few at a time while watching the "Other" memory indicator, but this will cause a loss of any data the apps are storing, like files, high scores, settings, etc.
I don't know of an 'electronic' way of find this out. -

josh0921, I know that being without your PIN can be quite the hassel. Just to be sure, are you referring to your billing account password or are you referring to a PIN used to unlock the device? If this is regarding your billing PIN when calling into customer service that cannot be changed, but can certainly be updated after completeing secondary verification over the phone. As has already been said, The onboard ethernet is 10/100/1000 and capable of autosensing which speed it's connected at.
What is more in question is the service you have. I don't remember if cable is the same, but with DSL, there are two connection methods.
1. IP Based. A static IP internet connection that is always on. Usually three things are required information that can be given via your ISP.
A) IP Address
B) Gateway
C) DNS Servers (Without these the PC cannot resolve DNS names so it doesn't know that http://www.website.com = xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address.
You can get there by right clicking Network Neighborhood, and click PROPERTIES. Then right lick Local Area Connection and click PROPERTIES. You can click the TCP/IP setting and click the properties button and enter the proper information to get you online.
2. PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol Over Ethernet). PPPoE requires software from the ISP and usually all that is required is installation of the software and a USER NAME AND PASSWORD. IP, DNS, and Gateway are all auto-determined by the remote server that the PPPoE software connects to.
Does yours use one of these? Most people use a combination router/firewall and plug in either settings. If you've already configured your settings and are still getting no access, suggest the following:
a) Reset your cable-modem, then your PC and try again.
b) Check your cable connections. You may have an intermittent connection on your net card/wire. check the pins and look to make sure they make clean contact. Try another cable to make sure there are no broken/intermittent conductors in the cable. -
For the past few weeks my computer will slow down when I have been on Safari for awhile, then freeze, and then just go black. I have to press the power button and then it goes to a black screen with the apple logo and a loading bar underneath when it reboots. I'm not sure what is causing the issue, but on my previous mac it would have an error message if something like this happened that I could submit. Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Step 2
In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful. -

Browse to the Mac page at http://roaringapps.com/. There you'll find hundreds (thousands?) of Mac applications listed with indications as to Lion compatibility.
Surely, there's more to Lion compatibility than merely whether the app is "Intel" or "Universal", as opposed to "PowerPC" (as shown under Software > Applications in System Profiler).
It's a bit surprising that nobody seems to have done an app that scans your system then looks up Lion compatibility at roaringapps. -
I am getting message from MacPro that my start up disc is full - but I can't find this "start up disc" and can't figure out what to do to help situation. I've been making a number of imovies, which generates junk files and material that I should toss in the trash, but it is not clear to me what items I can toss and which items I can't toss. Can you help? Using the imovie "help" support the system showed me under the menu item "go" where the "start up disc" should be - but that wasn't actually available on my menu! Thanks for your help!

Because of a problem, I uninstalled Firefox once, reinstalled it and it ran. I had a problem so I uninstalled/reinstalled it again. Now it will not run. I get an error message saying that firefox is running and you can only run one at a time. I have uninstalled multiple times and can't figure out what is running. Your only recourse is to force it into DFU mode:
Turn your phone off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your phone and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a phone in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.
