i lost my ipod touch first generation at a friends house and i think someone stole it i dont have any serial number or packaging to find the serial number.

- Only the old fashioned way, like if you lost a wallet or purse.
- Change the passwords for all accounts used on the iPod and report to police
- There is no way to prevent someone from restoring the iPod (it erases it) using it.
- Apple will do nothing

Without having already set up the FindMyiPod feature there is nothng you can do to locate the iPod. Apple can't help either. Thereis no way to prevent someone from restoring your iPod to factory defaults/new iPod and using. Report it to the police and change the passwards for all accounts used on the iPod. it.

In order to use Find My iPhone (or iPad, etc), your device has to be connected to iCloud with a valid ID/account, the Find my iPhone service has to be turned on (on the device), in Settings>iCloud. It sounds as though you haven't done these tasks - unfortunately, there's no way to track your lost device.
BTW, you don't "download" icloud, you register it on a device by going to Settings>iCloud and then click the ON switch and entering your ID/password (perhaps this is what you meant by downloading iCloud).

If you have an iCloud account the you can go to www.iCloud.com and sign in with your Appleid. Click on Find my iPhone and Find it's location, deactivate or Wipe it.
I would also call your Mobile service provider and have them cancel the service for that unit.

so my iphone 5 kept crashing and i brought it to the apple store and got a new replacement phone. So i bought a 4th gen 32gb ipod touch off of craigslist. It had never been opened. It still had the seals on it. I opened it, but never connected it to itunes. The iPod can't be locatd by its SN. The SN can only be used to verify tha the iPod is yous when it is found.
