How can I find where my Aperture 3 RAW files are kept?

Hi,
I need to clear my mac to free up some disk space.  The majority of space it used by apurture so ideally I would like to save all these RAW files to a hard drive.  I don't want to export them I just want to find the original files/versions.  Does anyone know how to do this?
I also use TIme machine back up so would they be automatically stored on here?
Thanks,
Ruth

Ruth-
Note that any moving of Masters must be done from within Aperture. Do not try to simply move them or you will probably lose the connection. After you move your Masters to external drives as Terence described, your Masters will be "referenced" and the Aperture Library will be a civilized size. The Aperture Library should remain on the internal drive.
Time Machine has a spotty history with Aperture backups. IMO original images should be backed up before import into Aperture or any other images management app, and the Aperture Library should be backed up from within Aperture using Vaults.

  • How can I locate the original .CR2 /  Raw file from Photos in finder?

How can I locate the original .CR2 /  RAW file from Photos in the finder window? I would like to know a easier way to open my files and use them in Photoshop than having to go to the Pictures folder, right clicking "show packaged contents", and manually searching for my CR2's / RAW's. It is also ridiculous to have to export the RAW file to my desktop, and then take it into Photoshop or another photo editing program.  I was able to do this in iPhoto and find I cannot do so in Photos. Please help? Can you please consider adding a right click function that says "Show Original file in Finder". That would make it so much easier and better for those of us who want a simple way to access the original files and use them in other editing programs. At least with iPhoto you could go to the top menu / preferences and find your items.

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html is the place for feature requests and feedback
Rather than use the 'Show package Contents route, the supported and safer way is to export the unmodfied original.

  • How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.

How can I process a Sony A7 RAW file into Photoshop CS5.  I tried the file DNG converter 8.3, but it did not work.  I was able to download it, but upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5, it reads the jpg files fine, but not the RAW files.  I thought the DNG converter 8.3 was the right file, but apparently it is not.  Perhaps I need to do something in Photoshop CS5 to initiate it, or place it in a particular directory.. Please help.

First of all, you should have used the Adobe DNG Converter 8.6, not an old, obsolete version.  Always use the very latest version.  8.3 was simply the first ACR version to support your camera model, that's all.
Note that the DNG Converter works only on folders, not on individual raw files.  Put all your Sony raw files in a folder and run the Converter on that folder containing the raw files.
I have absolutely no clue as to what on Earth you mean by : "upon reading the memory chip from Photoshop CS5".
You also need to make sure that CS5 is fully updated.  You cannot rely on the highly and notoriously unreliable Adobe auto updater to tell whether you have the latest update installed or not.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You might try to see if you can change your security questions. Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account > Password and Security.
I'm able to do this, others say they need to input answers to their current security questions in order to make changes, I'm inclined to think its worth a try, you don't have anything to lose.

  • How to Delete imported JPEGS after matching RAW files are imported as masters

Using a 5D Mark III and shoot JPEG (SD) and RAW (CF).
Aperture 3.5.1, using a managed library
Perviously, using a 7D so new to shooting JPEG and RAWs from an aperture Aperture workflow standpoint.
I know that i can import the JPEGs > delete images that do not make the cut > then import the matching RAW files in the import dialogue that correspond to the JPEGs in the Aperture Library.
I use the RAW files as my Camera Master images and once the RAW files are imported, the smaller resolution JPEGs are no longer needed or viewed in my normal edit workflow.  I only need the JPEGs to quickly go through the images to find out which RAW files i need to import at a later time to increase the speed of import > edit > deliver.
    My Assumptions:
    1.  Logic would lead me to believe that after import the user should see a stack like image representation with whatever file type is considered Master to be on top and the viewable secondary file type on the bottom.  clicking on the image stack should allow you to see both file types as you would normally see with image stacks with the same files types.  This is not the case...  What am i missing here?
    2.  Logic again would lead me to believe that when i have the ability to delete one of the 2 image types as i do not need both in the end.  After the import process is complete and RAWs are backed up, I want to delete the JPEG files as they are just taking up more space on my DAS drive array...  There is no need to keep a duplicate of every file in both JPEG and RAW format.  This is not the case as when i delete the JPEG or RAW, both files formats are deleted simultaneously.  What am i missing here?
    Problems: (correspond to Assumptions above)
    1.  I do not seem to have access to both images (JPEG & RAW) in a stack where i can expand and close the stack to see both?  It seems like i only have access to the image type i have selected as Master?  This seems counter intuitive to what the workflow should be as why would aperture 'lock the secondary file types away' so you can't easily view both file types as the same time for comparison?
2a.  Reality seems to be that i do not have access to the JPEG and RAW image files.  I can only see one at a time by selecting the images and choosing 'make JPEG master’ and then respectively... 'make RAW master', but you can't see both at the same time for file comparison.
2b.  Also, I can't find a way to delete the JPEG images after the RAW files have been imported.  I would presume most professional photographers shoot RAW and do not shoot JPEG as their camera master or editing master images.  I do not understand why aperture has captured both as a pair in the library that does not allow me to delete the JPEG (in this case) as i have selected the RAW as my master.
If someone can please help...  The function seems like either i am missing something obvious or that the implemented function of using RAW + JPEGs files for import is broken from a real world workflow standpoint.

    leonie...
thank you for clearing that up for me.
I think that at this point it is silly to use the JPEG+RAW import functionality as it seems that it takes longer to do the above steps than to just import only the RAW files and press on from there.
I seems what i have done in the past of only importing the RAW files and then using the quick preview functionality to reduce image load times is the best thing in can come up with without keeping 'duplicates' in the database.
That really baffels me that there is no built in functionality to remove the JPEG from a RAW+JPEG pair and i wonder how the real world photographers who help Apple test and implement software to solve real world workflow problems thought the JPEG+RAW import was going to be used.
I do understand that i can use a smaller JPEG file size to reduce the bloat of the database, but used over hundreds of thousands of images is certainly going to make a dent in my total aperture database size and therefore storage needs down the road.
If you have any other workflow thoughts, or know of a 3rd party plugin/ etc... to fix this obvious shortcoming then i am all ears..
thank you again Leonie and have a great week

  • How can I find where this came from? - start up disk almost full

Hi, my mac began saying this to me today "Start up disk almost full"
So I began deleting files. I deleted a lot via DiskWave.
But now Diskwave says I have enough space but my mac sure doesn't.
What do I do? What's all that 'other' stuff and where can I find it?
    Thanks in advance!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How can I find where a specific font is used in a Pages document

I have a Pages document that always shows a font missing error when opened. Is there any way to find where that font is supposedly used? Alternatively, if I install the font, the message doesn't appear — I assume that means that the font was found. Is there a way to find where that font is used in the document?

    Hi Bob.
For the present, at least, it's going to involve a visual inspection.
When you open the document, you can select a specific font in the Document Warning window, and replace it with another, using the Replace Font pop-up at the bottom of the window.
Choose a font that will be easy to spot, such as Wingdings, used below to replace Cambria:
At this point, you could replace the occurrences individually with a suitable font, or press command-Z to undo the replacement, or discard the Pages version of the document and open the original a second time to produce a new Pages document.
For the future, you use Provide Pages Feedback. in the Application menu (in Pages, the "Pages" menu) to send a feature request to Apple. The link will also take you to the Feedback page.

  • Aperture 3.1 can't find/see my Canon RAW files when importing

Aperture 3.1 cannot see my CANON RAW files when doing import!!!
Do I really have to re-reference each image in the library if I have moved the library to a different volume? Images are not moved to the library, only referenced.

You don't want to re-import files if you move the library. You just need to reconnect the masters.
If you moved the whole thing over at once it should be easy; if you monkeyed with the folder names you could have a lot of work on your hands.

  • How can one find where a bookmark is located?

As briefly as I can: in Opera 12.16 there was a very useful way of managing bookmarks. When you issued a query in the "search" bar, you not only got the exact references to the bookmark you were looking for, but also WHERE in the "bookmarks" file it was located. For example: if you had a "DuckDuckGo" bookmark in a "Search Engines" folder, after querying for (e.g.) "DuckD" you received both a pointer to the DuckDuckGo bookmark, AND one to its actual location in its proper folder.
In Firefox, instead, if you issue a query in the "search" bar, you receive a chaotic and unordered list of "names", with no reference whatsoever to where every name points to: no folders, no subfolders, nothing.
Which is very disheartening for a user, like this writer, who has accumulated a HUGE number of bookmarks (some of which go back even to 1998, the year of the beginning of my "Internet" age).
Now I ask: is there any way to have Firefox's bookmark management work like the one of the old, "pre-Chromeization" Opera 12.16? If such a way doesn't exist yet, wouldn't it be the time to include it in a future release of the Fox?
    Thank you in advance :)
    Harken

    Thank you very much, the-edmeister.
Well: when you say «I doubt if it will be added by Mozilla at this late date», I must admit I more or less suspected it ;) (or, in other words, my previous question was all in all just a "''ballon d'essai''", to see if there was any possibility in that direction.)
Anyway, let me add that it's a pity we have, as usual, to resort to - ''hear ye, hear ye! '' - '''yet another add-on''' [1], for a function which is patently so fundamental (in the bookmarks management) that it would deserve to be included already in the original code.
I LOVE Firefox (which keeps on reminding me of my "first love", Netscape Navigator): to the point that, just recently, I've had a harsh exchange in a forum with a fellow who, as it has become more or less custom nowadays, was complaining that "Firefox has become SO HEAVY and SO BLOATED in its latest releases" (and the obvious subtext was: "while, on the contrary, Chrome... blah blah blah".) My objection has been
    * that, first of all, Chrome HASN'T GOT ANY BOOKMARK MANAGEMENT (at least, not one deserving any mention), as opposed to the Fox, which has one (my exact words) that is definitely SUBLIME (and it's true: second only to that of Opera 12.16, which is the ONLY reason why I still maintain the old-style Opera up and working, despite the fact that it clearly begins to show its age); and
    * moreover, that with Firefox, in that precise instant, I was being able to keep '''750 tabs contemporarily opened''' (due to the fact that Firefox lets you decide whether you want the tabs to load as soon as you open them after a link, or not: a possibility which Chrome and its derivatives don't have); where, on the contrary, at least in my experience, already with 100-150 tabs Chromium and its derivatives begin to show clear signs of "''insanity''" =D
Too bad, however, that the SUBLIME quality of our bookmark management system is slightly "spoiled" by this kind of - I dare to define them - "''coding superficialities''" (or, which is the same, "''design superficialities''").
Thank you for your kind answer (and for your suggestion: yes, I had already searched through the add-ons repositories... but I missed those two extensions)...
    Peace :)
P.S.: [1] an add-on which, incidentally, happens to work PERFECTLY!!

  • Can't Find Or Acces My RAW Files ( Canon EOS 350D

I'm new to SLR Cameras.. I have a Canon EOS 350D So y decided to shoot in RAW. But i have problems and question. If you just go to the camera directory can you see the RAW images? And i cannot find my RAW files that i shot..in my camera i can see them but in Bridge CS3 and PS CS3 nothing...i've already downloaded the update Camera RAW 4. But Nothing So how to work with RAW.. Pls Help me..because i need to shoot again tommorrow so i'm short on time..
    Raizen Albertsz,

I found some one with almost the same problem so i am going to change his words a little bit so that you can understand my problem.
I'd taken a few shots here and there this week in RAW + Large format, but wasn't able to find the RAW files. OK, I thought perhaps I was mistaken and didn't have the settings correct & didn't really take any RAW shots.
So I reformatted the 4GB Scandisk CF card (via the camera) and took more shots, all in RAW + Large. Going thru the camera display with Info turned on, I can verify that each one was indeed on RAW + Large. But I still can't find them.
I'm using a cable to connect my EOS Rebel XT (EOS 350D) to transfer the files to a selected folder on my pc. Opening that folder in Windows (I have Win XP)there are only the the JPGs in it. If i open Adobe Bridge CS3 or PS CS3 i would find only the JPGs. Where are my RAW .CR2 files going? I was under the impression they would be in the same folder as the JPG images, with same file number. So that i can see like a thumbnail or something.
I've downloaded the Camera RAW 4.4.1. Upgrade. I did what is written
To install with Adobe Creative Suite 3 or Photoshop CS3:
    1. Exit Photoshop CS3.
    2. Open My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
    4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
    Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
    5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as in step 4.
    7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
Note: If generic camera thumbnails appear in Adobe Bridge, follow these steps:
    1. Check to make sure the plug-in was installed in the correct directory in step 4 above.
    2. Start Bridge.
    3. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache.
but still nothing. So what else could i do?
    Raizen Albertsz,

  • How can I process a linearly converted raw file while preserving color?

    Hi,
I want to convert my raw files in a linear format (to preserve all the dynamic range and detail and prevent unnecessary clipping). My question is "how can I modify the brightness or luminance while preserving the hue and saturation of every color?"
As for applying the gamma curve, I guess the best and only way in Photoshop is to create a Levels adjustment and place a 2.2 in the middle (gray) input box. However, I read in http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/hybrid-conversion.shtml that a 4.75 value should be used... Why? Is the number placed there not correspond to the gamma being applied?
    Thanks in advance.
