How can I find where this came from? - start up disk almost full

Hi, my mac began saying this to me today "Start up disk almost full"
So I began deleting files. I deleted a lot via DiskWave.
But now Diskwave says I have enough space but my mac sure doesn't.
What do I do? What's all that 'other' stuff and where can I find it?
Thanks in advance!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
          iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

    How can I find out this person who has been emailing me every few months. I have one of the emails full header that I retrieved on my iPhone. I omitted my email address for privacy, but mostly it is original. Is this email a scam? I don't know who this person is. Thanks in advance!

    If you don't know the sender, then it is most likely a scam or spam email. I get them every day - I just delete them. I also get daily notices from Facebook or someone called Adriana at Facebook even though i do not have an account there. Can't do anything about it - just delete it.

  • I can't find where to switch from my internal disc burner to my external burning device

    I can not find where to switch from my internal disc burner to my external when burning music in iTunes. Please help.

    First, check to make sure it is plugged in. With all of the devices you may have and limited USB ports, you may have mistaken which is plugged in. When you pull down file to burn a CD, a pop up window should occur giving you a selection of your internal and external CD drives. If you only see your internal drive, try inserting a disc and see if you computer asks what you want to do with the CD. If so, it shows your computer is now seeing the drive. If nothing happens, try restarting your computer with your external drive plugged in.

    Thank you for all of your answer.

    I've seen it mentioned on here that a PRAM reset may solve it:
    Reset PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
    Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P and R.
    You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
    Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • How do i solve the 'start up disk almost full' problem?

    when i turn on my macbook air, it comes up with a warning message that says 'start up disk almost full' and that i need to clear some space, how do i do this?

    For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
    Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
    Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then reboot.
In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown asBackups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Reboot and it should go away.
    See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
    You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
    Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
    Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
    ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
    If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
    Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
    Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning.
    I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
    When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • How do I rectify start up disk almost full. I am new to Macs and struggling

    How do I rectify a start up disk almost full message? Never had this until I put a load of photos on to my Mac book air

    Hello Kirkcaldy Ronnie,
    As Plotinus Veritas said take a backup for your Images on External Hard Disk.
    As your Macbook Air Startup disk is full and if you are unable to do anything on your Mac follow the below process to boot your Mac in Safe Mode and then delete some files on your Mac to free up some disk space and then you should be able to boot in Normal Mode.
    Steps : > Turn of your Macbook completely by holding the Power On/Off key on your Mac's keyboard > Turn On your Mac again and simultaneously press and hold the Left Shift key on your keyboard and this should take your Macbook in Safe Mode. ( Note : You will see a loading bar at startup when you boot your Mac in safe mode and your Mac will take some time to boot) > Once you login to the User Account on your Mac go ahead an delete as many files as you can from your Mac to free up some space (try to delete and make as much space as you can and keep at least 20% space free of the total amount of your disk space on your Mac Disk) and also empty the Trash of your Mac to completely remove the files from your Mac. > Now you can restart your Mac and let it start in Normal mode and check of you are able to login. If you are able to login in normal mode then try to transfer the data which you do not use regularly on an external hard disk and keep internal space free as much as you can as that will help you to get a better performance of your Mac. Hope this helps you.

  • How can I find my iphoto pictures from a recovered hard drive.

    My macbook pro suffered an attack of spilled wine. Its unrecoverable as smoke and flashes were seen when it was powered up afterwards. I removed the hard drive to recover all my files but I can't find the file with my iphotos library in it. How can I find it or where should I look

    It actually helps if you provide details first - your original question was how to find your photos - now it turns out that you knew where they were but were trying to open the library with an older version of iPhoto
    older versions of iPhoto can not open newer libraries - iPhoto library manager can rebuild a library for an older version
    Or you can copy the originals (or masters depending on the version of the newer iPhoto which you do not share) folder to the desktop and then create a totally new library using just the photos

  • I deleted all my emails from inbox and trash, but the mail "file" has 2GB. How can I permantely delete this information from my iphone4?

    How can I permantely delete email information from my iphone4?
    I deleted all my emails from inbox and trash, but the Mail "file" still has 2GB...

    Does anyone have an answer to this problem? It's been 4 or 5 days now and iCloud still says I have 0kb of 5GB available, and 6.1GB of mail on iCloud. I guess that's better than yesterday when it said I had 8.3GB of mail. Does anyone know if it simply takes Apple a week to actually empty a mailbox?
    thanks in advance, hopefully tomorrow it says I have only 4GB of non-existent mail and I can start using it again...

  • How can I find and remove viruses from my mac

    I fear that I might have a virus on my beloved macbook pro. i message was spassing out and not sending my messages, my folders continue to dissapear from my desktop causing me to restart finder (not a big deal just annoying) and some other out-of-place things are happening. I don't like credit cards so i can't buy any intvirus software so I was curious to know if there is a way to search for, find, and remove this potential virus on my own.

    Apple provides and updates malware protection as part of the operating system functionality. There is no application you need to run. In using Macs in the corporate world and privately over the last 20+ years, the only malware that got into a Mac came from a shared MS Word document. That was in 1994.
    Everytime that I chose to run a commercial or opensource anti-virus tool, a full sweep showed no infections.
    There may be other systemic issues with your Mac that are the root cause for what you describe. As a baseline, I would do the following:
    Run /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility. On your boot disk, choose First Aid, and verify/repair permissions.
    Reboot your Mac. Immediately press and hold the shift key until a login screen appears. Enter your login name, your password, and before continuing, press and hold the shift key again, until your desktop reappears.
    Reboot normally.
    What effect do the above have on the problems you mentioned?

    You turn it on by going to settings-video-closed captioning=on.
    If a video has captioning, should have the closed captioning symbol on the video description screen in iTunes store.
    You can get software to add captions to your own videos.
    Handbrake:
    HandBrake can now include subtitle tracks that can be turned on and off, instead of rendering them onto the video track permanently (which also reduces video compression). This means you can include Closed Captioning data from DVDs and TV broadcasts, or find SRT text subtitle files on the 'net and include them. When using the Matroska container, you can also store the graphical subtitle images (VobSubs) from a DVD as a separate track. An added benefit is that multiple subtitle tracks can be included in the same output video.

  • How can I find the Scripts directory from a script?

    Hello all! After playing with Photoshop scripting, I'm now playing with AE too, and in my first try I've stuck in finding the scripts path from the script itself.
    In Photoshop, there was this piece of code that somebody in the Photoshop Scripting forum kindly shared:
    var scriptsPath = new Folder (app.path + "/" + localize ("$$$/ScriptingSupport/InstalledScripts=Presets/Scripts"));
    But this line doesn't work in After Effects because app.path variable doesn't exist (very funny, I thought Photoshop and After Effects shared the same basic app variables) and the path given to the "localize" function is wrong in AE (I think "$$$" means nothing to it).
    Can somebody give me a clue about how to solve this? Thanks a lot in advance :-)

    This script shows a couple of examples you can try. The first part shows a way to get the folder the running script is in. The second gets the main AE app folder although I don't know if appFolder works on Windows (you'd still need to add /Scripts on Mac or /SupportFiles/Scripts on Win).
    var thisScript = new File($.fileName);
    var containingFolder = new Folder(thisScript.parent.absoluteURI);
    alert("This script is in " + containingFolder.absoluteURI);
    var appFolder = new Folder(Folder.appPackage.parent.absoluteURI);
    alert("The app folder is at " + Folder.decode(appFolder.absoluteURI));

  • How can I find the serial number from CS4 for my mac? I remembered it being on the box, but now I can't find it, and they website I thought to have registered it to doesn't recognize the e-mail I would have used then I got it.

    I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but the website recommend I ask here. I bought the CS4 when I bought my macbook pro in when I was in college. I remember there being 2 serial numbers, so I could install to one other computer. That macbook pro finally died, and now I have a new mac which I am trying to re-install the creative suite on, only I can't find the serial number.  The two stickers on the back of the CS4 box (which i thought were the serial numbers) don't look like that they're asking for, and the website listed on the inside of the box for me to register to doesn't recognize my e-mail (which hasn't changed since buying CS4).  Any idea where I could find the serial number?
