I recently installed a new operating system (Windows XP with service pack 2), and then downloaded the latest version of iTunes. The next time I hooked up my iPod (3rd gen.)to sync it, iTunes removed all of the music that I'd purchased on iTunes, and i was unable to sync it back on. Then every time I opened iTunes to try again, my computer would freeze (but only when on iTunes). I used the restore function to restore factory settings, so now there is nothing at all on my iPod and when I try to sync, it gives the above message (The iPod cannot by synced. The disk could not be read from or written to). Any suggestions for how I can fix this problem?

One of the first things you may want to look at is
1. Download and Install latest iTunes Software. You should have iTunes 7.2
2. You stated earlier you did the 5 Rs. So you have done a Reset and Restore. I would give it one more shot after you upgraded iTunes as needed.
If this still does not resolve the issue. Try copying songs over 1 at a time. Do not copy over a playlist. Then try a new play list all together. Create a new playlist.
You can also take a CD you may have and put import songs into iTunes then see if those songs will copy over.
You may also create a new user and open up iTunes in a new user and import a cd with some songs and see if the same issue occurs.

So heres my problem... If I try to sync my iPhone or IPad to our computer I get an error that reads "The IPhone cannot be synced. The disk could not be read from or written to." The error comes at the start of syncing the photos. I have removed the photos from my iPhone it syncs fine, so the problem has to be with the photo library, RIGHT? The problem is iI have never had this issue before. I have my iTunes and iPhoto on a external hard drive and this has been fine in the past, but now i can not even view my photos on my iTV... Since you noticed this problem, have you shut down (powered off) and restarted your iMac?
iPhoto does the syncing for photos. Are you able to run iPhoto manually (start it up from the Dock) and access your photo library? -
Can't Sync New Nano: "The disk could not be read from or written to."
I just got a new nano for Christmas, but can't seem to sync it with iTunes. I updated all the software, reset, restarted, restored, and all the rest, but it still gives me the same error whenever I try to sync it:
"Attempting to copy to the disk "{Ipod's Name}" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
If I change the settings so it's not downloading anything it doesn't complain, but as soon as I select any artist or album to actually sync, it gives that error.
There's also one specific file that gives a different error message (in addition to this one)--it tells me that the file wasn't copied because the iPod can't play it. I tried looking for someone with the same problem, but all the ones that I found were talking about this happening to videos, and this is just a straight audio mp3.Just doublechecking. Help! This all runs quite smoothly until I get to 'consolidate library'. Then, tracks start copying, then stop followed by a pop up saying 'Copying files failed. The disc could not be read from or written to.' Any suggestions? Thank you!
I had similar problems, it was a nightmare and on a 3 month ipod too!. I use a Powerbook G4 at home and a G5 at work - both were returning the same problems. so I sent it off to apple, they quickly sent it back saying there was nothing wrong with and it didn't need to be repaired. I tried it again and the same problems occurred "disc cannot be written to or read from." I could copy 20 songs onto it at the very most. A couple of guys at my work suggested updating it on a PC, then adding tunes via my mac as normal - guess what!? it works a treat!?. How ridiculous is that!? an Apple product works best on a PC. these generations of ipods are obviously designed to work best on Intel based Macs. What is wrong Apple? are you abandoning the G-generation!? still, atleast my ipod works for now - it will prove a problem when I have to update the iPod's software since I don't own a PC or an intel-based Mac.

Just got a new ipod video 30g. When transferring songs, fails after a while....transfers some songs then this error pops up:

this is the message that appeared when i tried putting songs on my shuffle..what should i do?
I had this same issue and stumbled across this solution on a random web sales site for second gen shuffles.
"It is ESSENTIAL that when you first sync the shuffle you enable disk use via the option in iTunes. This prevents iTunes from automatically disconnecting the shuffle. If you do not do this, the shuffle is disconnected automatically as soon as you plug it in, which means you are unable to update it. You will get the messages "Unknown error: Device cannot be read from or written to" which is displayed because the iPod has been disconnected although iTunes doesn't' realise it has disconnected it. iTunes will then freeze and you will be unable to reset the iPod or enable disk use. So make sure you enable Disk Use the very first time you plug in your shuffle! Otherwise you will have to manually reformat the Shuffle"
So I downloaded the ipod restore utillity to reset the ipod to factory defaults. I then ran itunes, gave the ipod a name and let it autofill to give me time to change settings in the ipods setting tab in itunes. Down the bottom of this tab I ticked the checkbox to allow ipod disk use and clicked the apply button and all is working fine now. If the ipod completes synching before you click the apply button then you will need to reset the ipod and try again.

I have recently purchased an ethernet usb adapter for the MBA and after a month it is not working. Says cable unplugged.
Now I have tried it with 2 other connections on other computers that are working and still no response. Many reviews or fixes online mention something with a 10.5.5 patch that seems quite outdated and do not work. Anyone figure out how to fix this or do I have a broken adapter?I've used Apple's adaptor on a mini MBA without a problem.

Are you trying with an app that support rotation? Not all apps support rotation. Safari does support rotation.
If that does not rotate
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

If you're streaming video it's possible that your internet connection simply isn't fast enough to stream video. Have you tried to start a video, then pause it and wait a couple of minutes, then play and see if you can get enough of a head start to keep going?
You can't put flash on the iPad, flash and iDevices will never play together. You could look to see if your source has an app or look into various third party browsers that support flash. -
I tried everything that I found suggested anywhere, including spending two hours with Apple on the phone.
In the end, I bought a new Belkin USB 2.0 (high speed) card and installed it, and synced all 1000 songs in one shot.
For those of you who are getting this infuriating error, consider whether you have a good USB card from a reputable company. Mine was third party and (apparently) not so good. Yes, it was a 2.0 card.
I'm not saying run out and spend $35 now, but consider it when all else fails.i appreciate everyones help lol..
