How can I free up space on my iMac without losing my music?

I have 1TB on my IMac but it's almost all used up how can I wipe everything except my music and movies? I also want to keep a few essential apps but don't want to go through the hassle of erasing one by one. Can anyone please help? Thank you.

See "Storage drive" here:
Move the movies into new folders there, that will free up a lot of room.

I'm overseas and need to sync my iphone with itunes but I don't have my computer. How can I sync it to my friends computer without losing my music and data?

Why do you need to sync your iPhone with iTunes - for what purpose?
You can transfer iTunes content and photos from one computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first with a warning message provided beforehand indicating this will occur.

  • How can I free up space on my iphone without connecting to itunes?

How can I free up space on my iphone (by posibbly deleting some music) without connecting to my mac itunes? I'm travelling abroad for some time so can't access my itunes account on my mac at home and the iphone is full. I thought I'd left enought room for plenty of new apps, but alas no. So I need more room for more apps. We have my partners PC laptop with her itunes loaded if thats any use. I've deleted and backed up all my iphone photos already. Thanks.

Claiming that it can be done, but not telling him how is not all that helpful. We were dying for you to share the steps that he must take.

The process is just like deleting an unwanted email in your inbox. Simply find the track(s) you don’t want on your iOS 5 device anymore, slide your finger over the track listing to the left or the right to reveal a hidden “delete” button, and then select “delete” and the track is gone. Unfortunately there’s no mass delete option, so those Backstreet Boys songs are gonna have to be deleted one at a time.

  • How can I update my phone to iOS 5 without losing my music, not being able to use computer with my music on it

I can't use the computer I would normally use since the monitor is broken.. how can I update my phone for the latest version iOS 5 without losing my music?

Borrow a monitor from a friend or neighbor. If you update it on a machine other than the one you normally sync with, the music will be lost until you can set it back up to sync with the original iTunes library (or a new library that contains your music).

  • How can I sync my ipod on another computer without losing my music

I got music on my parents computer, and I tried downloading it to my ipod, but it won't sync without deleting all of my songs

You can manage music and videos among different computer as follows:
Using iPhone, iPad, or iPod with multiple computers
But you can only sync with one iTunes library.

  • I am at capacity How can I free up space but not delete music

My Ipad is at 55.4 gb used 24 gb in music alone. 2.7 gb available so can't do anything  Ipad shuts itself down and won't let me open mail, use facebook, safari. How can I free up space but not delete songs in library

Unless you are attempting to download a sizable file, 2.7 GB should be more than enough to continue fucntioning. Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray BEFORE doing the reset.

  • HT201364 How can i free up space on my startup disk to install OS X Mavericks?

How can i free up space on my start up disk to install the OS X Mavericks software?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space. Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
If you're using Time Machine to back up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of files you've recently deleted. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size with the largest at the top. It may take a few minutes for ODS to finish scanning your files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • MacBook Pro2012 : How can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

My MacBook Pro (2012) hard drive is almost full, Apple refuses to provide hard drive upgrade service, how can you get hard drive upgraded in Netherlands without losing warranty?

    Dear Ralph, and All
    My MBP is indeed non-retina.
I also have Apple care support for 3 years
I was in touch with Apple suport since last week. Response I got on Phone was pretty astounding (waiting email confirmation). They say following
    - Apple support does not provide such service of upgrading hard drive
    - Doing it yourself means you will lose warranty (due to nature of operation one would need to perform on the computer)
    - None of authorised delars will provide such a service
So as such there apparantly is no way to get your hard drive upgraded without losing warranty.
    Leaves me a bit perplexed
I do understand MBP retina (or iPAD / iPhones) are manufactured in way that makes it technically impossible to upgrade certain parts. But why non-retina MBP?
What do you all think? is this reasonable? is this what a MBP customer would expect?
Really appreaciate the quick responses i have recieved from you and others on this forum.
    Many thanks

If I download Lion to my macbook pro, how can I also download it to my imac without paying for it twice?

The licence terms for OS X Lion are exactly the same as for any other App Store application. An individual may download and install on as many Macs as they own.

I have a 32 GB iPod classic, about 7 yrs. old. It is formatted to Mac, but I no longer have access to a Mac. Can I reformat it to PC (yuk!) without losing my music or screwng it up?

You need to transfer the music from your iPod on to your iTunes library on your PC, since that is where you are currently syncing and where you are signed into iTunes Match.  It doesn't matter that you were previously syncing it with a Mac, and you won't need to reinstall iTunes on your PC.  But you will have to use 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to transfer any music not purchased from the iTunes store from your iPod to your iTunes library.  Here's another guide on this, which is shoter and you may find easier to follow: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive.  Also, if you're using iTunes 11, go to View>Show Sidebar.  This will make it easier to follow along with these guides.

  • How can I delete an email on my iMac without opening it - I know it contains a virus

I have an email account on my 2013 iMac - how can I delete an email on the account without opening it - I know from the subject that it is a virus

It does not have a virus attached and unless you open whatever (if anything) is attached or linked to the email nothing can happen.
So you can select and delete it and nothing will happen
Although, if you never select it nothing will happen.
    Your choice.

  • How can I free up space and send to icloud?

How to free up space on ipad & send to icloud?

You can delete downloaded apps (which will also delete their content) from your iPad by pressing and holding one of them on your iPad's homescreen until they start to shake, and then tapping the 'x' on them to delete them - press the home button when you've finished deleting apps.
And you can delete films and/or TV programmes from the Videos app via the Edit button at the top right of the film/TV programme selection screen, and music in the Music app by swiping /dragging across them from right-to-left.
Whether your apps will then show in the Purchased tab in the App Store app for redownloading will depend upon whether they are still in the store - and for your films, TV programmes, and music whether they will show in the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app will depend upon them still being in the store and if you are in a country where they can be redownloaded (and if you've moved countries since buying them).
You can copy iTunes purchases over to your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases so that you have your own copy of them which you can use to sync back (and to take a backup copy of) so that you don't have to rely on being able to redownload them.
If you are asking because you want to update to iOS 8.3 then updating via your computer's iTunes should require less free space on your iPad than updating directly on it - but still do the Transfer Purchases and take a backup and preferably take your own copy of any important documents and/or photos
