How can I get a screen shot to save to my desktop?

Question

I click on Control-Command-Shift-4 to take a screenshot but I get an error message.  "Your screenshot can't be saved.  Cannot write file to intended destination"

Thanks for the post.
Since I seldom save to clipboard using keyboard commands,
remembering what the symbols mean in keyboard shortcuts
can be a problem after being away from using them often...
Nothing like choosing the wrong keys for unexpected results!

The cheat sheet is small enough to find usefulness on occasion,
but too new for use in my antique Mac OS X versions. To have
and use a simple image showing them is good. Or the chart of
commonly used shortcuts written in keyboard symbols is OK.
Back in OS 9.2.2 & Before, I used most of those odd looking things.
After Pro failure to get my new Mac repaired under AppleCare that I
was not supposed to fix (due to warranty) I haven't kept up much...
and don't get new ones anymore given their troublesome nature.
{Oh, I did get a great deal on a nice wood, wire, & glass bead abacus.}
