How can I get album data back?

A week ago when I opened iPhoto 5.0.4 I got a message to update and did so. Thereafter when I opened the application I found no album or slideshow listing or organization! At least the photos seem all there.
I would get a message: "The main iPhotoLibrary folder you have selected appears locked or on a read-only CD". Yet "Get Info" said the folder was not locked, and it wasn't on a CD.
The listing of the contents of "AlbumData.xml" appeared complete, but I got a message that it can't be opened or imported. I had created several iPhoto libraries, and, when I look at the listings of their contents under "Pictures, they appear complete. But when I select any of them in opening iPhoto while depressing Option, I get the message /Users/norrisd/Pictures/iPhoto Libr ND/Library6.iPhoto" can't be opened.
I read the Discussions, andI tried rebuilding, - to no avail. I bought iLife and installed iPhoto6, - again to no avail.
The photos, both edited and originals, seem to be there, but without any of the formerly extensive album and slideshow organization.
In May, I had used DataBackup to make on an external drive a full incremental backup of the entire internal drive. At this point, as you will understand, I am extremely disappointed in Apple in repect of iPhoto, am fed up with iPhoto6 and would like to restore the iPhoto 5.0.4 application and related files from the external drive. But I'm not sure I know how to do that successfully and am scared to try it lest something more go wrong!

To begin with, you seem to have done nothing wrong; and so you should be able to recover everything one way or another. It may take a while, though.
The person who would really be able to help your is Old Toad. In the meantime, you might clarify what happened. You were still running iPhoto 5.04 when you got the mysterious update message and only bought iPhoto 6 later?
If so, then you may have a compounding of problems. Something messed up your library in iPhoto 5.04, and it could not be repaired. Then when you installed iPhoto 6, it tried to convert the library to its new file format and failed. From what I have read in other postings, one should always make sure that everything is in order before upgrading to 6. Too many things can go wrong in this procedure; and things probably got worse.
I think the easiest solution for you is to reinstall iPhoto 5.04 from your DVD and just replace the entire iPhoto library folder on your hard drive with your backup copy. Just to be safe, just move the current library folder to some other location before copying in the backup. You should repair all file permissions on your hard drive with the Disk Utility before installing.
If this does not work, you can put everything back and see what Old Toad says. Good luck. Keep cool. Things are inconvenient, but not catastrophic.

You can find the backup files and then copy them to a safe place if you are worrying about this.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata%, then press Return.
Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\

Is it an iTunes backup or an iCloud backup? If iTunes, connect the iPhone, right click on the name of the iPhone under the DEVICES section in iTunes. Click on Restore from Backup.
If iCloud, on the iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. When the device powers back on, you will see the original setup screens you saw when your iPhone was fresh out of the box. One of these screen asks you if you want to restore. Choose Restore from iCloud backup.

iOS devices do backup automatically to iCloud providing:
iCloud Backup is turned on
It has a Wi-Fi connection
It is connected to a power source
The screen is off
5GB is plenty of storage for me to backup to iCloud automatically.
I have a 64GB iPhone & a 128GB iPad both backing up to the same iCloud account and I still have nearly 2GB free.
This is mainly because media is not backed up and Photo Stream & iTunes purchases do not count against your iCloud storage.

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device. Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

Since you've a Retina machine, you have flash storage. If you can get to the Recovery partition (it sounds as if that's where you are? Nonetheless, you can boot into your Recovery partition by holding down the command and R keys whilst booting).
Use Disk Utility to verify and, if needed, repair your flash storage. If it can't be repaired, call back.

Sorry, but you're using Sync incorrectly if you don't have any other devices connected to that Sync account.
Sync wasn't intended to be a "cloud" storage device; it's intended to be used to "synchronize" a user's across multiple devices. Upon completion of the initial setup of Sync procedure, the user is shown the Recovery Key and is told to make a copy of that "key". There are buttons in the dialog window to "save" to disk or to "print" the Recovery Key. Unfortunately, too many users just ignored that message (or ignored it) and put themselves in the same position that you are now in - lost data and no way to recover that data.
The Sync / Recovery Key is used to encrypt your data as it is being uploaded to the Sync server and then used to decrypt your data when it is downloaded to one of your devices. Without the exact Sync Key that the user's data was encrypted with, the user's data is useless scrambled bunch of 1's and zero's.
Firefox 29 has a new version of Sync that eliminates the need for the user knowing their Recovery Key. The method that generates that "key" uses the user account name (email address) and the user password, so in the future user's shouldn't find themselves in the same position that you are now in.

I thought My every detail is safe on FF server Now. when I am trying to sync my details in old sync, in first few attempt it can't login, but eventually it successfully logs in. but nothing is synching. It's "safe" when you use it as intended, for synchronizing Firefox data between multiple devices. Sync was not intended to be used as you tried to use it; as a backup medium or "cloud".

When you wiped your device, there is an option which you must check in order to wipe your Media card, did you have that checked or unchecked?

I have an old Tungsten E2 and jut lost everything out of the Datebook. Only the data on Datebook and it's still on my Handheld. How do I get the backup file for Datebook? Or how do I sinc from Handheld to the Palm Desktop?

Your post is unclear, but I think it says that your handheld has the data that disappeared from your desktop. Before syncing the data back to your des,top, I suggest changing the Datebook hotsync conduit to Handheld Overwrites Desktop.
