How can I get the Finder to recalculate folder sizes?
I had a folder called "architecture 600," with lots of large files in it; when I checked it with command-i, the Finder told me it contained 691 MB of information.
I then moved most of the files to another folder (not just to the desktop, but to a new folder in the Documents folder). However, when I select "architecture 600" and press command-i, Finder still tells me it's 691 MB. When I open up "architecture 600," there are only three items in it, which total 305 MB.
I've tried removing and re-adding the size column in the enclosing folder, and turning off and then back on the "calculate all sizes" checkbox in the view options (command-j) for the enclosing folder. The finder still gets the size of the folder wrong.
This is happening with lots of folders, not just "architecture 600," by the way.

This has been a bug since OS X 10.0. As far as I know, the only way to get Finder to accurately reflect the size of a folder after moving data out of it is to add another folder (or file) to it, even an empty folder will trigger the Finder to recalculate the folder's size.

You can't remove the "other" section on your iPad, iTunes and the iOS need this folder to store data during syncing for example, damaged data and for all things, that you can't access on your device.
You can reduce the size by restoring, if the folder grows to more than 1GB due to problems when you sync or download apps or photos.

Anyway - since you are running Mountain Lion, you already have "Find my Mac" installed. This will also locate your iPhone, if you enable "Find my iPhone" on your phone.
To enable "Find my Mac" open the System Preferences and go to the iCloud panel. Sign into iCloud and enable "Find my Mac" by pressing the button beside the icon.

Does anyone know how to make hidden folders visible like in Windows, or if there is even a way at all?
A few weeks ago my iPod kind of crashed and I lost my library, but the files are still on it. Anyone who is familiar with Windows knows you can just goto "folder options" and make hidden folders visible, which is how you can get into your iPod to access the individual music files.
I need and want to format the iPod but can't because I need my music off of it first and I get Finder to allow me to see the hidden folders. Please help!

Since I use the Terminal frequently I use it to transfer songs that are on my iPod back to various computers. However, if you aren't used to Terminal there are better options. See this page:

I don't quite understand what you've posted. Have you cancelled your Gmail account?
If you've just connected Mail to Gmail, and you've used IMAP to connect to it, you'll probably have an "All Mail" mailbox towards the bottom left of the screen (under the GMail mailbox). In there should be a Sent Mail box. All your Sent mail should be in there. To have it appear in the Sent mailbox at the top left of your screen, highlight Gmail's Sent Mail mailbox, click the Mailbox menu at the very top of your screen, and click "Use this Mailbox for - Sent".

How do I get Finder to act like Explorer

Hi there,
I converted to Mac about 3 years ago and I have had this "thing" that frustrates me no end and I have done nothing about it.
How can I get Finder to show me the Folder (Collapsed / Closed) and sorted by Folder / FileName alphabetically i.e. like Windows Explorer.
I am constantly working in different folders and it is frustrating that we I go to File Open in a application that I have to work out where I am, then drill up and then back down in to the folder I want to be in.
I know this is probably a basic OS operational question and there are probably shortcuts keys to go back to your home folder etc.
Please help me with my sanity! and no I don't want to go back to Windows :-)

Open two windows.
Use List view or Column view
For sorting / arranging, there are two options on the same menu/button.
- The first option is arrangement, which groups items.
- The second is sorting, which is accessed by holding down the option key.
- With arrangement set to none, you can sort by clicking on the column headers in List view.
Show the sidebar.
- put default starting points there, like Desktop, Documents, Pictures, etc.
- you can start from those to get most anywhere quickly
Know the Path? Type cmd-shift-g and type the path (~/) starts in your home folder.
Turn on spring loaded folders in Finder Preferences. When you drag something onto a folder in the finder, it will spring open and you can dig down that way.
Command-double-click on a folder will open it in a new window.
The Finder Go menu commands work in the Open File dialogs.
Dragging an image from iPhoto or a music file from iTunes onto the open file dialog will take you to the file location in the Finder (useful for attaching images to emails, etc.).
