How can I get Firefox 4 to detect and load the latest version of a web page automatically?

Since upgrading to Firefox 4 from Firefox 3, I've noticed that various pages I visit frequently
http://smbhax.com
http://sketchy.smbhax.com
http://paleface.net/z/monkey
come up showing old versions of the page, so I have to press F5 to see the latest version.
I did not have to do this under Firefox 3--if the page was out of date, it loaded up the new one for me without making me refresh manually.
Looking through the support documentation, I see that in about:config, I could change browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to 1 to force it to check for a new version every time, but the default (3) *should* be detecting when pages are out of date--it is not.
I never changed that setting under Firefox 3, so presumably the default setting worked in that version of the browser. Did the default used to be 1? Or is the behavior for the setting "3" just not working the same way in Firefox 4?

Since switching to proper HTTP cache-control headers on the server, Firefox has not failed to present me with the freshest version of those sites.
Those headers were not necessary in order for Firefox to do the same in previous versions of the browser--all it took previously was a meta-equiv "pragma" "no-cache" line in the page HTML. Firefox 4 doesn't seem to be supporting that old HTTP 1.0 instruction. Anyone browsing updating sites that still rely on pragma no-cache may have to press F5 to see the latest version of the page--unless perhaps they change their browser.cache.check_doc_frequency setting from the default; I did not test that.

  • How can I get Firefox to respond to files with the .nxg extension?

I have been trying to open other pages than the home page of this site http://www.marinemachining.com/ and the only way that I can get them to open is to right click the URL button and choose open in a different tab or new window. Just clicking on the button should go to the page (for example "Propeller Shafting" and this will not work. Any help you can give is appreciated. Seems this Netopia file extension .nxg is not dealt with right now unless I have set something up wrong. Otherwise, I love Firefox.

Are that files that you have saved on your computer or web pages that you try to open?
Are you opening the files with a double-click in Windows Explorer?

  • Firefox is not displaying the latest version of a web page!

When I open this web page with Safari, it doesn't display exactly the same information as when I open the page with Firefox.
Based on the missing information, I suspect that Firefox is displaying an OLD version of the page.
If so, what can I do to always have the most current page displayed???
    Thanks

If this is a page you visit frequently, then Firefox may have cached an earlier version longer than the site anticipated. To temporarily bypass the cache, you can try one of the following:
Shift + click the reload button<br>
    Command + Shift + r (on Windows: Ctrl + Shift + r)
Does that retrieve the latest version? If so, caching is the issue. If not, there must be some other explanation.

  • How can I get Firefox to "grab onto" and then "hold onto" the data signal until I tell Firefox to release it at the end of my session of internet browsing?

ok, I hope that my description of this problem does not come out in such a disorganized fashion that it makes the description difficult to follow. here goes: every 30 seconds to 1 minute (or thereabouts, I'm estimating) my mobile phone's browser (whether Firefox or any other) loses the data signal, so that tje next time that. I click on something, I get an error message that the "data connection timed out, retry" or "network unavailable" or "check that you are connected to that internet", etc. etc. etc. I have downloaded many apps that are supposed to boost data connectivity and/or improve internet speed, blah, blah, blah, till I discovered that was a problem with the server being able to keep up with staying locked onto my browser. in one of these apps diagnostic screens, I found a notation that therr was something wrong with my cell's relative position. well, how could that be, I wondered, since I had "GPS tracking" "GPS reporting" and "location sharing" all enabled? but, then I noticed, on the image of my cell's location as represented by this particular app, that every half minute, or so, the blue dot which represented my cell's location would slip to the left about one quarter of an inch, or so, and in the longitude and latitude part of this app's diagnostic screen I saw that the numerical designations of my cell's longitude and latitude were zero and zero. it suddenly occurred to me that the server had lost sight of my cell because my cell had moved too far out of the range of that server's sight due to the rotation of the earth. well, blow me down, what am I supposed to do to fix that? how can I tell my cell phone's OS to send out some kind of identifying info on a constant basis, so that the server could keep track of it (and I would not lose the signal)? or, conversely, how could I get my cell phone's browser to grab onto the signal and not let go of it until I was done with that internet session, at which time I would then manually release the signal myself? I hope that my explanation of the problem made enough sense that you could follow it and that you can come up with a workable solution for me. oh yeah, my phone is an LG OPTIMUS ELITE 696. thanx, from the enragedkangaroo.

    Hello,
I'm afraid I don't think there is going to be much we can do to help you here. The description sounds like an issue with the phone rather than with Firefox specifically.
I don't think the problem can be caused by you moving out of range of the cell, due to the rotation of the earth. The cell towers (that provide phone signal) are sitting on the earth, just like you, and so move at the same speed as you. This might be a concern with satellite phones using Low Earth Obit satellites but this isn't the case here.
I think the best thing to do would be to get in touch with your Phone Operator or Device Manufacturer for support. If you are out of the support period or can't get support from them for some other reason then a standard 'cure-all' for mobile phones is to do a Factory Reset. This will return your phone to its default factory settings and wipe all of your data / modifications off the phone. This tends to solve most problems and is probably what the official support team would tell you to do. I can't guarantee that it will help but it has a good chance.
There are instructions on resetting your phone here:
    http://www.hard-reset.com/lg-optimus-elite-hard-reset.html
    I hope that helps.

  • How can I get Firefox to stop trying to update to newer version

I don't want a newer version of Firefox and I'm tired of it always trying to update automatically to a newer version. When this happens, I can't get to the website I want. This has to stop, or I'm going back to Windows Explorer.

You can find the update settings here:
*Tools > Options > Advanced > Update: "Automatically check for updates":
If files already have been downloaded then you need to remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder.
You can delete active-update.xml and updates.xml as well if present.

  • How can I get Firefox to "pinch open and close"

The zoom feature where you spread or pinch together two features on the Mac trackpad used to work on the last version of Ff, and I used it all the time to zoom in when text was too small. It's not working with this new version and I'm really disappointed. Anyone know if there's a way to change settings or something so it will work?

Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in cmd_fullZoomReduce
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift cmd_fullZoomReset
    browser.gesture.pinch.out cmd_fullZoomEnlarge
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift cmd_fullZoomReset
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />

  • How can I get Firefox to remember my open tabs the way it once did?

In the past, each time I reopened Firefox, the tabs which I had had opened opened back up. But the other day I accidentally installed a "Radio.... something or other" toolbar while trying to listen to an ESPN press conference. After I added that toolbar, the next time I opened Firefox, none of my tabs re-opened, so I uninstalled the toolbar, but now, when I close Firefox, with several tabs open, and then re-open it, it does not remember the previously open tabs.
    Thanks,
    Doug Weiskopf

hello doug, this toolbar was probably adware which still left remnants on your system, so please perform all these steps:
    # [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] (this will keep your bookmarks and passwords)
    # afterwards go to the firefox menu ≡ > addons > extensions and in case there are still extensions listed there, disable them.
    # finally run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] and [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner] to make sure that adware isn't present in other places of your system as well.

  • How can I get rid of Apple Maps and Put the Google Maps back?

I wanted to know how to remove the Apple Maps and reinstall the Google Maps. The Apple Maps is a very inferior programme and not worth the space on the. Computer. It can't find anything. It's a complete waste of time.
So my original question is, how to get rid of it, and put the Google Maps back?

CHances are google maps are never coming back as part of the bundled OS. Apple and Google seem to have parted ways (possibly has something to do with Google having their apps on other devices from other manufacturers but no one knows for sure)
Since preinstalled apps cannot be deleted, the most you can do is ignore the icon, shove it back on a back menu page (I have a 4th menu page on my iPad containing nothing but the bundled apps I consider worthless. I just ignore that page and never go there) and then put a shortcut to google maps on your iPad or find a third party map app you like better.

  • How can I get TB to open again and accept the emails Carbonite restored recently?

A large number of emails were deleted from my Inbox for no reason I could discern. I downloaded all the missing folders and files from Carbonite, but I can't get TB to open now. I get this message when I try: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." Since I can't get TB to run, I have no way to close it. Restarting makes no difference. The nice folks at Carbonite confirmed that they had downloaded my emails onto my computer, but said that the Thunderbird problem was not their area of concern. And, if my problem was not solved in 30 days (this occurred about a week ago), they would automatically delete my back-up of these emails from their server.

*Goto Task Manager > Process > Check for "Thunderbird"
**If its running > End Process Tree

  • How can i update firefox but keep my drivers from the last version?

I have programs that will not work with the drivers in the new version. so i need to keep my old ones so the other application will work.

    Update to which version?
The Firefox 4.0+ versions aren't compatible with PPC Macs, but updating to the latest Firefox 3.6.24 version shouldn't have an effect on "drivers".

  • How can I update my ATI HD 6750M driver to the latest version in Bootcamp?

When downloading from ATI, it tells me that I do not have that card installed (I do). The latest (working) update from Apple was in January 2011, but many modern games require the driver to be of a newer make than that one. I have tried to completely uninstall the current driver, even manually removing references in the registry, before installing again, but no luck.

Do a search in this group. I remember someone else with an ATI card having a problem getting the right ATI Boot Camp video driver. Eventually they did.

  • How can I get Firefox 6 to recognize and display jpg attachments inside the new Yahoomail; this works in Firefox 5 and IE.

In the new yahoo mail system, firefox 6 (installed two days ago or so), I am not able to view jpg attachments. The OS is XP. I can view text attachments. I am able to view these attachments in MS IE. On my laptop, where I am still using FF 5.0, there are also no problem in viewing the attached pictures.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4/5/6/7 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''
If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

  • How can I get Firefox to take me back to the last Bookmark folder I was in like Internet Explorer instead of going back to the beginning each time??

When i find a website using bookmarks in Firefox and then I want to look at another site in that same folder, especially in a subfolder, Firefox takes me back to the beginning of the bookmarks menu. With Internet Explorer, it takes me back to the same folder or subfolder I was in. For example, if I was wanting to search newspapers, especially if they are in subfolders, I want to stay in that same place. Firefox loses that place, unlike Internet Explorer, and takes me back to the beginning each time. Sometimes I have several layers of subfolders and it takes time to find that place again each time.

A possibility is to open the Bookmarks Sidebar.
Click the list icon next to the star on the Navigation Toolbar and click "View Bookmarks Sidebar" (Ctrl+B).

  • How can I get Firefox to print at normal size (like IE). to a full A4 page,?

Up to about 3 updates ago, amy printing from Firefox worked fine. Since then an A4 pahe is squessed into the top LH corner (about 1/4 the size). So if I need to print anything from the browser (e.g. a map) I have to use IE. Looks like a bug in that update. As I assumed this would be fixed next time round I didn't bother reporting it; but it's still not sorted.
