How can I get iPhoto to find missing files?

I lost a hard drive that had thousands of photos on it. I recovered the photos from a different drive, not using time capsule.
iPhoto still has the thumbnails and the only way I can find out whats missing is by double clicking the photo, then it asks me to find "img_1234.jpg" and I do and it links it. But I have thousands to relink, is there an easier way?
Thanks

I originally had the photos organized by date folders on the hard drive, then I imported them into iPhoto.
It sounds like you had a Referenced Library - that is, the photos were not copied to the Library on import. Now something has changed and the path to the photos has altered somehow and iPhoto cannot find them.
iPhoto in this method uses aliases to track the location of the files. You might try repair those aliases with an app like [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy>
If that fails there is no fast solution for this, and it's one of the reasons that I wouldn't recommend iPhoto in this configuration.
There's also nothing to be gained from doing so.
You can use iPhoto with Photoshop: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Note that iPhoto sends a copy+ of the file to Photoshop, so when you save be sure to use the Save command, not Save As... If you use Save As then you're creating a new file and iPhoto has no way of knowing about this new file. iPhoto is preserving your original anyway.
My best advice is to convert that Library to a Managed library.

  • How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes.  I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images.  Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title.  Why does this happen?  Can I make it stop?  How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it.  Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.
    Many thanks,
    Adam.

In every version prior to iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File...
    In iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original...

  • How can I get iTunes to find dislocated files on my portable hard drive?

I have had to move my music files onto a portable hard drive to save space but now when I plug my portable hard drive in and try to play tunes the exclamation mark comes up. iTunes can identify individual mp3's when I want to play them, through a manual file search, but is it possible for iTunes to find all the music files at once either when I ask it to or even better identify them automatically for me?

It looks like too many changes already had taken place in the 'iTunes Library' file, to start from the original situation.
You can of course restore all the links manually, but you're probably still busy doing that next week.
Try to rebuild the library, using the instructions in this article:
How to recreate your iTunes Library
    You could loose some information.
BTW. If your library mainly contains MP3's and AAC's and Apple Lossless, you won't loose any track related information (artwork, name, artist, album etc.)
That information is stored inside the song file.
Other information is stored inside the library files.
More info in: What are the iTunes library files?
You already made changes. Some links probably point to the external disk and some point to the internal. So I'm not sure re-creating the library will give satisfactory results. I hope it does of course.
If it's all a mess now, you could consider to start from scratch.
By doing this, you will loose all playlists, ratings, podcast subscriptions etc. but not track related info as mentioned above.
To do this, trash the 'iTunes Library' file and run iTunes. you will start with an empty library. Drag and drop the 'iTunes Music' folder on it.
All music will be added to the library.
Consider this as a last resort. Try re-creating first.

  • How can I get Tracker to find a shared review PDF initiated in another domain?

I initiated a shared review for a PDF and stored it on a network server in domain X. Subseqauently, the server was moved into a different domain, call it Y.
Now, Acrobat Tracker can't find the PDF ... and reviewers can no longer  access the PDF.
How can I get Tracker to find the PDF in the new domain Y?

No, this is not possible. You need to initiate the review again. This is because the review server information is embedded inside the PDF and when you change the review server, the JavaScript embedded in PDF still refers to the old server. So Tracker is unable to locate the review PDF.
If the old review has comments by other reviewers, you can save it as an archive and initiate review on new server on this new PDF. This way all the review comments can be retained in the PDF but they will be published "on behalf of" the initiator now.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I get iPhoto on my Mac to recognize my new iPhone 6?  (iTunes does recognize it!)

I got one of the new iPhone 6s (the smaller version) and it's been working great.  I was able to restore an old backup from my 4S and transferred everything over.  iTunes recognizes the new phone and I've had no problems bringing files within apps on the phone to the computer like before.  HOWEVER, iPhoto doesn't even recognize the phone so I can't import new photos off the phone.  How can I get iPhoto to recognize it?  I tried searching for the phone as a drive via iPhoto and that didn't work either.

So says my computer.  Honestly, I'm not tech-wavy in the least so I just take its word for things.

  • How can i get iphoto on my IPAD if i already have it on my macbook pro

how can i get iphoto on my IPAD if i already have it on my macbook pro?

See this page, if your iPad qualifies for a free download: Free Apple apps for iOS 7 compatible devices
iPhoto on the iPad and iPhoto on the Mac are completely different programs. The Mac version cannot run on the iPad, because the operating systems and the processors are different. Don't expect, that iPhoto on the iPad will be able to do the same things as your iPhoto for Mac, pr that you can keep the two iPhoto libraries in sync.
Se this help page for a description, what iPhoto on the iPad can do: http://help.apple.com/iphoto/ipad/2.0/

  • I have created my magic movie how can I get it to a mpeg4 file

I have created my magic movie, can I share this with I tunes ect, and how can I get it to a mpeg4 file?

Are you referring to Magic DVD rather than Magic Movie?  If so you really can't go from an iDVD project to iTunes.  You would need to create a slideshow in iPhoto and export it out as a QT movie before importing into iTunes
or create the slideshow/movie in iMovie and Share directly to iTunes:
What system, iDVD and iPhoto versions are you running?  What is the media, i.e. photos or movie files, that you used in the iDVD project?

It's so frustrating--can someone please tell me why Lightroom can't even TRY to find "missing" files? Years and years ago, iView (now Expression Media)  did it so it shouldn't be that difficult to offer "missing file suggestions"!

If you move and rename your files from within LR, your outside programs can't find them, unless you export them. This creates quite a mess in the end
What outside programs do you have in mind?
By outside programs I meant Adobe Bridge and CS5. The only filenames that remain unchanged are the raw files. I eventually rename files as part of the workflow. I work with 3 different cameras, all creating different filenames. As LR is limited in what it can do, but not without its merit, I have to use other programs.
Anyway, I don't have a problem - as I had mentioned in my first reply. Synchronising folders does the job for me very well

  • I delete iphoto incident . how can i get iPhoto back?

    i want iphoto back
how can i get this ?

How did you delete it? (not a silly question)
If all you've done is removed the icon from the Dock, go to the Applications folder, find iPhoto and drag it's icon to the Dock, being careful not to release the mouse until the other icons in there move out of the way for it. (if you release too early, you'll leave the application on the Desktop and will have to drag it back to Applications and try again.)
The icons in the Dock are only aliases, so can be replaced easily.
If on the other hand you've somehow deleted it from the Applications folder, there are two possibilities -
If the trash hasn't been emptied, open it, right click on the iPhoto item and select 'Put Back'.
If the trash has been emptied, you'll need to reinstall it from the software restore disc (disc 2 of the grey discs that came with the Mac), or from the iLife DVD if that's where you installed it from, or if on Lion, I believe you'll need to go the App Store and re-download it (but someone may correct me on that).
