How can I get my blackberry curve 8900 to update to 5.0 and get wifi to work?

I bought a blackberry curve 8900 around a year ago on an AT&T plan back when data plans werent required, so it just has minutes and texting. because of an issue i had with data before, i have data disabled completely on my account to prevent any mistaken data being used up and charging me. my AT&T contract recently expired so i called them up and got my blackberry unlocked, and will be soon switching to tmobile.
My problem is that it refuses to update past 4.6 over to 5.0 because of some restriction on it placed by AT&T, and my wifi wont work unless i have data enabled for the same reason. Is there anything i can do? I've tried installing 5.0 from different service providers onto my phone but it never installs properly.

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
While you can (with just a trick or two) use any carriers OS package for your specific model number, it won't do any good since all 5.0 level OS's require a data plan, regardless of which carrier. So, without that, you can't update to 5.0. Further, it is the data plan that activates BIS -- which is what is used to run the BlackBerry Browser...hence that non-functionality also. Basically, a BB without a data plan is, to many, pretty useless.
There are other browsers that bypass BIS and will use a generic data plan (assuming you have that)...OperaMini and Bolt come to mind. You might give those a try.
Good luck!

    Hello CPRM,
    Welcome to the forums.
In this case we can try to reload the software on the BlackBerry® smartphone to make sure it is running the latest version and there are no issues with the OS.
Here is how to backup your BlackBerry smartphone http://beryl/OPAC
Once you have backed up your BlackBerry smartphone please follow the link below to complete a clean reload of the BlackBerry smartphone software.
    Link: http://www.blackberry.com/bits/KB03621
Once completed test it and proceed with a selective restore, here is how to restore http://beryl/gigolo
If after doing the software reload you are still having the same issue then you will want to contact your wireless service provider or point of sale for options.
Hope this helps. Have a good day.

  • Does anyone know how to make my old blackberry curve 8900 work with my new sim card that has been set up on my 9360?

i hate my new blackberry 9360  it never gave me a days hassle and i want to use it for the remainder of my contract as the 9360 is just a pain and full of problems and no matter what i do i cannot get an alternative phone despite the fact that i am a high spender with loyalty of over 10 years to my supplier.  i do not want to use a fixed second hand phone.  the reason we get a new phone is emphasis on new.

  • How can I bring a Sketchup Make file (or exported JPG) into AI and get single line paths to export as a .DXF file?

I need to draw flat objects for laser cutting in Sketchup Make (free version) and send them to the cutter as .DXF files.  What is the process to use AI to convert them?  AI will not import .SKP files but sketchup will output .tif .png or .jpg.  When I try to use AI to make paths it draws double paths around all the black lines rather than a single path down the middle.  Thanks!

Thanks rcraighead, but this version does not seem to have the PDF output/save option.  BUT someone suggested this link  Convert Sketchup SKP files to DXF or STL | guitar-list  which is a Sketchup plugin (free version) which will allow DXF output.  The 'polymesh face' output option seems to be what the Laser cutter needs!  I am still curious as to an AI solution to this also....

  • Changing My Blackberry Curve 8900 Housing

Hi, I’m planning to get a Blackberry Curve 8900. Before I buy this phone I would like to know if I can change my housing to pink. I’m aware that a phone comes in 3 parts. A front cover, a middle cover and a back cover. I would just like to change the front and back cover as I think the changing the middle cover would be to much trouble unclipping parts. Is changing the front and back cover as simple as unclipping the cover of and on or do I have to remove and unclip parts to do this. I’m scared to unclip to much as I think I may break it.  Pictures or videos would be very helpful. Thanks.

Hi. I am wondering if silicone cases for the Blackberry Curve 8900 are better than a hard case? I ask this because I originally when I got my phone bought a hard case for it and the battery would get very warm and drain at an alarming rate. Once the case came off things were fine.  But I really would like to encase it if possible...would silicone be better or just cause the same battery issues again?  Advice please.  TY.

    Hey janvaughnquero11,
Welcome to the BlackBerry Support Community Forums.
    Thanks for the question.
The BlackBerry 8800 smartphone has 4.2 or 4.5 software as the latest.  BlackBerry 5, 6 or 7 device software is not available for that model.
Let me know if you have any more questions.
    Cheers.

  • BlackBerry Curve 8900 Locked - Not Accepting Password - I'm Original/Only Owner of Device

Hello - I'm brand new to this Forum.  I've had my Blackberry Curve 8900 since September of 2009 (original owner) and this is only my second problem with the phone. (My trackball gave out last July, but I had it fixed and it is good as new).
Anyway, I received an email this morning to update the password for my email account (Hotmail) and I updated via my settings on the phone. Then 10 minutes later my phone locked and asked for a password. I recently updated my Blackberry ID password and received a confirmation. Now when I enter this password into my phone to unlock it...I keep getting the message that it is "incorrect" and how many tries I have left out of 10 (it says information will be erased if one more wrong attempt). I already have done this 9 times and it keeps getting rejected.  I only have one attempt left and I'm extremely frustrated. Isn't this password the same as the BlackBerry ID password? What else can I do? Help!  Now all I can do is make call & receive calls. I'm unable to check email or text messages since phone is locked.  Please help!

    Hello FlowerChick,
Welcome to the forums and sorry to hear about your issue.
Before you made any changes did you use a password to lock your device? If so then this would be the password you need to enter. Hope this helps. Let us know if we can help out in any other way.

  • Is it possible to get the BlackBerry Curve to be a reliable MODEM?

My BlackBerry has been a constant source of frustration since it is worthless as a data device, it frequently drops connections and often will not reconnect again.  The phone provider just runs through a standard set of clearing cache, removing battery, etc. types of circumventions that may get the connection back but it fails soon after.  It is pointless to have a device that needs to have the battery removed multiple times every day, and that ends up being an unreliable MODEM for connecting to the internet.  Talking to the phone service provider is of little help since they are a middle man for RIM whom seems to provide them with no real means of resolving problems, and RIM seems to have isolated themselves from the customer base so that they have no idea about how the customer experience with their product.  The problem is encountered from both a Windows Media Center (WIN/XP) desktop and a Windows Vista Laptop, using my sons NOKIA E51 works without any problems and even provides faster connections in the process.  It seems that this is a problem with the BlackBerry product, but I have not been able to find any support that can resolve the issues.
ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET THE BLACKBERRY CURVE TO BE RELIABLE?
Message Edited by pdh1948 on 07-12-2008 02:40 AM

I would recommend that you update the handheld operating system. You can see a list of latest versions available HERE. If your problems persist then you need to get a replacement device from the carrier.

    ANYONE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Please refer to this official download portal as you proceed. It is sorted first by carrier -- so if all you want are the OS levels your carrier supports, your search will be quick. However, some carriers are much slower than others to release updates. To truly seek out the most up-to-date OS package for your BB, you must dig through and find all carriers that support your specific model BB, and then compare the OS levels that they support.
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. After installing the OS package to your PC, please remeber to delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
You may also want to investigate the use of BBSAK (bbsak.org) to perform the wipe it is capable of.
You may also want to try the "Bare Bones OS Reload Procedure" to attempt to narrow down the precise causal item:
Load your OS "bare bones"...if anything is optional, do not install it.
If the behavior presents immediately, then try a different OS with step 1
If the behavior does not immediately present, then run for as long as it takes for you to be sure that the behavior will not present.
Add one thing -- no matter how tempting, just one.
If the behavior does not present immediately, then again run for long enough to be sure it will not have the same problem
Repeat steps 4 and 5 until all things are loaded or the behavior presents
When the behavior presents, you know the culprit...the last thing you loaded.
If the behavior does not re-present, then you know that either step 1 or 2 cured it.
If the behavior presents no matter what, then you likely have a hardware level issue for which no amount of OS or software can cure.

KB27956 How to recover a BlackBerry smartphone from any state
    http://crackberry.com/blackberry-101-lecture-12-how-reload-operating-system-nuked-blackberry
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

    1. Login to you BIS site for your carrier. Carrier BIS login sites are listed here:
    http://blackberryfaq.com/index.php/Where_can_I_log_into_my_BIS_account%3F
OR you can login from your BlackBerry at the "personal email setup" icon.
    2. Click on the "edit" next to the email account on which you wish to edit (or remove) the signature.
    3. Where it says "signature", delete all text if you want NO signature, or edit the display what you prefer rather than "Sent from my BlackBerry..."

  • How can I add the Blackberry my friend gave me to my account that already has my prepaid phone on it?

How can I add the Blackberry my friend gave me to my account that already has my prepaid phone on it?

A few questions to clarify your specific situation will help us to better help you...
Do you want to swap phones and use the BlackBerry instead of your current phone?  I don't think you can add a line to a pre-paid account to use both - it would have to be two separate accounts.
What model BB is it?  And is it Verizon branded?  It may or may not be usable on a pre-paid account.
Finally, what is your current phone and account set up?  You may need to get a different pre-paid plan to use the BB, if it is usable on Verizon.

I keep getting the message: "what should Firefox do with this file" in Windows XP every time I want to download a file, e.g., adobe, excel, etc. How can this annoying message be deleted? The check box to "open file automatically" does not work!

    cor-el,
Thanks for your prompt reply. However, the sources you gave do not seem to apply exactly to my situation. I have attached some screenshots that show what the dialogue box looks like for a pdf download, and what my settings in the Apps panel of Options are. You will note in the first screenshot that I have checked the box to handle this file type automatically; however, the next time I try to download a file of that type, the same dialogue box appears looking exactly like the one shown, so checking the "automatic" option appears to do nothing. The files to be downloaded from my Gmail messages are not generic or altered file types - they are shown as pdf, doc, docx, etc. So while your intent was good, your post did not help. Thanks anyway.
