How can I get my mac to pop up an alert when my iPhone is ringing?

Back when I had an old Sony brick cell phone, I used Salling Clicker to interface with my Mac. One of the coolest features of this software was that anytime someone called me, and my phone was within bluetooth range of my mac, the volume on my mac would slightly lower, it would ring like a telephone, and the number of the caller would be displayed on the computer screen. How can I do this with my iPhone 3G?

There are a million things people think it would have been a no-brainer for Apple to build in, and they didn't (yet? They've added a bunch since the original phone). Send feedback or call AppleCare/Genius Bar, so that the desire get tracked and presumably flows into Apple's decision-making process at whatever (apparently very) minor weight Apple accords to popular demand.
I don't think AirMouse pops up those app-switching bezels--a regular command-tab does as well.
For notifications on your mac via wifi--I think you would need an app on the iPhone that notices the incoming call, and then sends a message to an app that is running in the background on your mac, that then pops up a notification. Interesting idea. At present, though, I don't think Apple would allow that either---the iPhone part of the system would need to run in the background, and Apple only opened up certain limited functions that third-party apps are allowed to run in the background.
Something about the notion of a third-party app launching an independent action when a call comes in strikes me as having security implications which Apple has been very wary about. My sense is that when apps save state and suspend/quit immediately when a call comes in, it's more like being taken over by the iOS, not acting on their own, though I'm not a developer, so I don't know.
Bluetooth would work better---Apple started with headphone support for BT, just added keyboard support with iOS 4 IIRC, and maybe will open up more features in the future.
This is a trade-off of the iPhone---Apple keeps it secure, elegant, and easy to use (more or less) but there are limitations that go with that.

When I put a burned cd from one Mac into another Mac, song titles do not show up! I have to enter them manually! My CD player reads the titles that i on the cd; how can I get my Mac to do so?

The problem is that I burned these CD's myself from music that I added from my personal collection to iTunes. The INFO is ON the CD's (it appears perfectly when I put the CD in my Numark mixer...so I know the info is on the CD), but for some reason, my MAC PRO will NOT read the info on the burned CD when I place the CD into the MAC PRO. The CD was burned on a MAC that I no longer own. But there HAS to be a way to transfer songs from a burned CD with the INFO that is on the CD burned with iTunes.
    PLEASE HELP!

  • How can i get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder?

How can I get my mac book pro to recognize a JVC camcorder using a Sony CAMERA USB cord??

Gotta say thank you — again.  Sorry the posts were spread out over more than one location.    I'll check and see if Third Party Software is considered a "peripheral", maybe that would have been a better single thread choice?
Definitely news we can use and the reference link is appreciated.
OT ~ We keep becoming more and more aware of how easy it is to lose one's bearings when it comes to keeping up with info tech.  My husband and I are both official members of the geezer set and have been out of the work force for some years.  You really do pick up so much just by being in the environment where people are using things to get work done.  A couple of old MP3 players, PPC G5, and a vintage Inspiron 3800 that someone didn't want any more is about it.  No cell phone, no iPod, no iPad, no home wireless network, no streaming media.  Fixed income.  So we do with what we can as long as we can.  If we could get by without that Intel processor, we'd probably make do with what we've got.  On the other hand, we've really wanted a notebook for a very long time and have to admit that needing to upgrade to accomodate my husband's project is pretty much just the "reason" we need.  I really mean it when I say that we are beyond appreciative that users take the time to share info and patiently educate those of us who fall into the "slow tech" category.

  • How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV?

How can I get the MAC address of my Apple TV? I currently do not have an HDMI device to connect it to, and the MAC is not listed on the box or the Apple TV itself.
(to answer the obvious, I am trying to pair it with an iPad, and I need to register the Apple TV for the network so the two can see each other)

As long as I know java doesn't have support to work on link-layer, only internet and transport layers. You may write simple native code. On windows, IP Helper functions, like SendARP allow you to pass an IP address and get the hardware address. You store the hardware address on your database/file and later, when that machine is off, you send a frame to the address you stored previous.

I haven't seen it on Linux, but if you need help let me know I'll check the Linux API's too.

  • I've overwritten my Mac OS with Windows Vista, how can I get my Mac OS back

I Was downloading a Windows Vista OS on my Mac and I accidentally deleted the Mac OS. How can I get my Mac OS back? Can I use the CD's accompanied with my MAC
when I put the DVD to Install the MAC system from vista...It doesnt give an option for ordinary installtion but it gives me an option for remote installtion (which it needs an network or internet connection or something like that...) what should i do ??
    :(:(

You need to repartition the drive. While booted from the DVD, select Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. In Disk Utility, select the boot drive from the list on the left. It will have a long name starting with the capacity in GB. Click on the Partition tab. Choose "1 Partition" as the volume scheme. Click on the Options button near the bottom of the window, then click on the button labeled "GUID Partition Table." Finally, click Apply. When the partition finishes, you can quit Disk Utility and go back to the Installer. You should now see your internal drive as available for installation.

  • How can i get mynew mac mini to use the drive in my old mac pro

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive.   So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire.  I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine  both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive.   But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much.  yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive.  Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers.   I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

No you should be fine. (The MobileMe service is being shut down, anyway, so there should be no impact at all.)

  • HT200027 I am still running Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8.  How can I get Lion Mac OS X 10.6, so I can update to Mountain Lion?

I am still running Leopard Mac OS X 10.5.8.  How can I get Lion Mac OS X 10.6, so I can update to Mountain Lion?

    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
If you need to purchase Snow Leopard you can still purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.] Ask for a Sales Representative.
Third-party sources for Snow Leopard are:
    Snow Leopard from Amazon.com
    Snow Leopard from eBay
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.
If you need to purchase Lion call 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. Ask for a Sales Representative. They will check your Apple ID, and email you a code and instructions.  The cost is $29.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download.
Be sure your computer meets the minimum requirements:
Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

How can I get my mac email account to work?

That requires you to enter the configuration correctly.  You can find out the configuration for your email from your ISPs website in most cases. Or if you're using Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail you need only Google something like:
"Gmail configuration for Apple Mail"  or  "Hotmail configuration for Apple Mail" (without the quotes).
    That should get you started..

I have an Retina display MacBook Pro with HMDI out port. I also have an HDMI to Component cable with Audio Plugs. How can I get HDMI out to work with this cable when plugged into the MacBook Pro and connected to the TVs Component and Audio in ports.

Will not work.  To my knowledge, dual converting like that isn't supported.  The Mac must detect the connected video output device and that sort of info cannot be done across an analog component uni-directional connection.
