How can I get songs from my iPod onto my computer?

I had to re-install windows on my computer about a week ago. I was under the impression that I could get my music and playlists back just by pluging my iPod into my computer and then i thought the ipod would snyc with itunes and put all of my music back onto the computer along with my playlists. However, i can't seem to get this to work... any help? I think i've heard of ways to just rip the music off, but what i would really like are the playlists that i had as well...

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. one way to can simply do this (if dragging and dropping won't work), is to simply put the songs that you would like in the playlist into the On-The-Go playlist in your iPod. Once you have put these songs into the On-The-Go folder (by highlighting the song and holding down the center button), simply plug the ipod back into your computer, and rename the folder with the songs in it. There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes.
There is a very direct method, which I personally prefer, but there are also numerous third party applications, which will help you accomplish the task as well. The link below provides terrific step-by-step instructions for the direct method as well as a few third party applications if you choose to go that route instead.
You can also do a simple google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
If you have any purchased from the iTunes store, it would be a good idea to sign in onto your account and authorize the new computer.
Also, when you plug it in, make sure to hit "Cancel" if it opens up iTunes and asks you if you would like to Transfer Purchses, or Erase and Sync.

I had a computer issue and some songs in Itunes got erased, they are however on my IPOD still. I used to get a message that askedme if I wanted to transfer music that was on my IPOD to the computer and the answer was usually no - so i clicked the box "Dont ask again" and now I need it. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks!

I had a similar problem. Download a program called "Yamipod" and it will allow to copy the music back into iTunes. I did it with about 5300 songs and it worked fine. Keep in mind the program runs off the iPod, so no installation on the computer is necessary.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

Since you loaded the iPod from your computer's iTunes library, you can just load the same songs from your iTunes library to the iPad.
