How can I get the most out of Siri?

I searched for a Discussion where folks shared ways they have discovered to get Siri to provide information and functionalities of value.  Maybe such a discussion is out there, but I couldn't find it...at least not at the level I wanted and not in the Apple Support Community.  I apologize if I missed it.  Just let me know.
Here is what prompted this.  Our family was traveling up the east coast recently.  A lot of interstate driving.  A lot of "Dad, I have to go to the bathroom...BAD!"  I thought I had the solution to these emergencies with my iPhone 4S and Siri.
Question Attempt 1:  "Siri, where is the next Rest Stop?"
Answer:  "I don't know.  Good luck."  (Or, something like that.)
Question Attempt 2:  "Siri, where is the next Service Area?"
Answer:  "I still don't know."  (Or, something like that.)
Question Attempt 3:  "Siri, where is the next Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike?"
Answer:  "If I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times, I have no clue."  (Or, something like that.)
Question Attempt 4:  "Siri, where is the nearest Burger King restaurant?"  (I knew all the Service Areas on the NJ Turnpike had Burger King Restaurants.  I thought this was a clever way to get Siri to spill the beans.)
Answer:  "Here is a list of the nearest Burger King restaurants."  (Siri provided a list of Burger Kings.  All required getting off the interstate.  None were closer than 15 miles away.  None were located in Service/Rest Areas.)
I mile later, we passed a Rest Stop on the NJ Turnpike!  It even had a Burger King.  OMG!  Was Siri on drugs or something?
So, that's an example where either Siri's functionality clearly was lacking, or I simply did not know the way to ask the question to get the information I needed.  That's what I'm hoping this discussion will provide.  Ways to get Siri to do the things it can do, and provide information it can provide.
BTW, we tried this Rest Stop game from North Carolina to New York on several interstates.  Struck out everytime.
On the other hand, if a plane flew overhead we had no trouble getting Siri to tell us what flight it was.  "Wolfram Alpha, what plane is flying overhead right now?"  Worked every time.  Go figure.

Dear fromsouth,
Oh dear...I had no intention of being disrespectful.  However, as I look back at my language used in responding to you, I now see how you could have interpreted things that way .  I am a physicist and have not taken a course in writing since a junior in high school.  Let me say I am well beyond high school age at this point.  That lack of writing skill can haunt me, as it has done here.
So, before I say anything, please forgive my choice of language in responding to you.  I DO appreciate very much folks who respond to questions I ask on this forum.  It takes time and thought.  Those are gifts.  Thank you very much, SINCERELY, for taking the time and thought to respond to my question.
I too do not know how Siri works.  I was throwing out well intentioned, but poorly worded, questions and hypothesis in response to your post.  You are right, 10 seconds is not a lot of time.  We can only guess at what magic Siri is performing during that 10 seconds.
Moving back to the beginnings of things, I still think that there may be ways to word questions to Siri to squeeze answers out of her that would normally produce, "I do not know" responses.
For example, as I mentioned above, I read elsewhere that if you ask Siri, "Wolfram Alpha, what plane is flying overhead?" you can get Siri to tell you the airline, flight number, altitude, etc. of that plane.  Who would have guessed that!?  (Even though Wolfram Alpha is quite a "smart" fellow himself. :-))
You ABSOLUTELY did not waste my time.  Your post made me think.  I appreciate that.
My Bad.  Please accept my apologies and have a Wonderful Holiday season.
Mr. Luigi

  • How can I get the most out of my iBook G4 (2005)?

Hi there! In 2005 I purchased my first Mac, an iBook G4 14.1 in. and to this day I still have it, in fact, it's what I'm typing this with and it's the only laptop I have. Is there any way that I'd be able to upgrade it to be usable for at least 2 more years? Thanks in advance!

What is new is not necessarily needed and what is old is not automatically obsolete.
I have a 2004 12"  iBook for those things it is capable of performing just as britny advised. For instance I have Mac OS X 10.4.11 installed (rather than 10.5.8) so as to be able to use Classic Mode. The many Claris Works, MacWritePro, and Claris Draw files I have can't be opened with newer programs so the iBook with Classic solve the problem. Also the many excellent games and graphics programs from the OS9 era are useable.
If you decide you need the capability of a newer Intel Mac I would recommend  keeping the iBook as a bridge to the past.

  • How can I get the best out of my battery life?

There are a variety of things you can do to extend your device battery life, and use your phone for longer periods of time to see you through the day.
Set your screen to timeout after a period of inactivity. This way your phone is not sitting idle with the screen backlight consuming extra energy. The recommended screen timeout is 30 seconds, but most phones will allow from 15 seconds to 10 minutes.
Turn off location services (GPS), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when not using these functions. When they're on, your phone constantly searches for your current location and open networks, which has a big impact on battery life.
Turn down the screen brightness. For example, on an iPhone 4 the lowest brightness setting gives roughly 6.5 hours of continuous use, whereas the highest setting gives roughly 3.5 hours. You can always adjust the brightness when you're outside so you can still see your screen clearly. Some devices have an auto-brightness setting, where the phone adjusts the screen brightness depending on the light around it.
Close your applications. On smartphones, returning to the ‘home' screen only minimises your apps – they keep running in the background. Closing your apps fully will save power; for example, on Samsung Galaxy devices hold down the home button for two seconds to see a list of all open apps. You can then swipe these to the left of the screen to exit them completely. On an Apple product, double press the home button to bring up all active applications and exit from there.

Re: How can I get the best out of my battery life?
    Hi,
When I make phone calls people on the other end have difficulty hearing me. They describe as they can hardly hear me as if I was speaking through the pillow etc). I am not touching any buttons and obviously it is not mute. This was happening couple of time in June, then every now and then. Recently it happened a few time in 2 weeks. I was trying to check if it was a reception issue but the place I spoke from is my office I make 70% of phone calls from. Can you book time for me in repair shop and address the issue.
    Thank you.

  • In Messages, how can I get the most recent entries to appear on top, like with my emails?  Thanks!

In Messages, how can I get the most recent entries to appear on top, like with my emails?  Thanks!

    HI,
    A Note.
Technically the most recent Conversation (or Chat) that has a new message (be it iMessage or IM) will move to the top in the list on the left if it is set in the View  Menu to do so.
Obviously this does need more than one Conversation or Chat to be listed to work.
It does not change the focus of the Chat/Conversation you are viewing.
iChat - the forerunner naver had an option to invert the chats.
The iChat Feedback page is where I use.
You will also see it does not list iChat 6 depsite listing Lion.
In this sense it has always beeen out of step on the iChat/Messages version front  (it took me a long time via the Lounge and Host help to get it on the list of pages to be updated on New OS versions)

  • How do I get the most out of my battery?

    Hello all,
I bought a MacBook Pro around 3/4 weeks ago, and I was just wondering how I should treat my battery to get the most use out of it. Should I use the computer until it needs charged? Should I leave it on the charger when I'm using it? Should I let it get below a certain percentage before I charge it?
I'm just looking for some tips because prior to purchasing a Mac I had a HP Laptop. I really ran down the battery on it because I left it plugged in too often.
Any info or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    exactly as Csound1 says.
keep it plugged in when you're close to a power outlet - but don't leave it plugged in 7 days a week....
once in a while, use under it's own power and charge it back up when it's down to 75% to keep your battery in optimal condition.
once every couple of months, use under it's own power and charge it back up when it's down to 35%.....
do not constantly discharge your battery to 0% - will shorten the life of your battery.
    good luck

  • I just installed Firefox 4. How can I get the "✪Bookmarks▼" out of the way on the right end of my Bookmarks Toolbar so that I can see more of my "normally seen" bookmarks? in English

With my previous edition of Firefox, I had more bookmarks shown in the toolbar. I like it that way rather than having to move to the right and then scroll. How can I get that feature back?

You can remove the Bookmarks Menu button on the Bookmarks Toolbar with code in userChrome.css
Add code to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css userChrome.css] below the @namespace line.
    <pre><nowiki>@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

  • How can I get the dent out of the lower right hand corner of my iPod touch

Hi so my iPod touch has a dent in it and it looks really bad and when you look closely you can see a little bit of light. How can I fix it or just hide it.
Ps- my parents won't get me a new one
    Hurry!

I would just purchase a case and hide the damage. You are more likely to cause more problems by trying to do something else.

  • How do I get the most out of 1st gen iPad?

I just gave my first gen ipad to a friend. The software apparently can only go up to 5.1.1. Any advice I can give him on how best to enjoy the ipad, given its limitations? Many apps are unavailable to him as they require the latest IOS.

Start by reading the user guide. There should be a link to it in safari, you can download it in iBooks, or see here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1595/en_US/ipad_user_guide.pdf

  • How can i get the pictures out of my ipod

Im giving my old ipod to my niece but it still has pictures on it that I dont want to lose. how can retrieve the pictures from the ipod before resetting it? its an ipod nano 3rd gen.

computers do sometimes recognise iPods as cameras when there are saved photos on them.
as iDeer says, saved photos (unlike synced photos) can be deleted on the iPod. just go into the saved photos folder, go to the photo you wish to delete, select it, then click the bin logo in the bottom right hand corner.
when you have saved photos on your iPod, this is the only time when it will act as if it has a 'disk mode'. you will be able to access them as you would access any other form of disk/usb stick (again, like iDeer, I don't have a Mac, so I'm not sure of the exact procedure). you can delete the photos by navigating to it like this.
i'm not sure how iPhoto works either, but can't you delete the photos in there? i've also read somewhere on here that you can switch off the setting for iPhoto to open when you plug in a 'camera'. again, i'm not sure where you'd find that setting, but i think it is there.
