How can I get the /opt folder to appear in Finder

I need to paste a file in the /opt folder. I cannot find or see it.  I need to copy a http.conf file in there.  TextEdit will not let me save as, so that option is out.

There may be an easier way to do this, but I know this will display /opt via TextEdit
TextEdit -> File -> (hold Option key) -> Save As...
Expand your Save As dialog box via the triangle at the end of the "Save As" field (triangle should be pointing up)
On the 3rd line select the Column browsing mode
Click on the folder name popup list and select your system name (should be the name you have in System Preferences -> Sharing -> Computer name)
Now the Magic: Command-Shift-period
Now Click on your boot disk (most likely "Macintosh HD", or similar) and you should see all the hidden files, including "opt"

Note if you don't have any folders on your Dock, note the trashcan is on one side of the dock with a divider between it and applications.  Minimized windows (with the yellow button on the upper left corner) will go between the trash and that divider.  You can drag folders into the section between the minimized windows and the trash.

Since the release of Mavericks (OS X 10.9) syncing contacts and calendars with a Mac via iTunes is no longer supported. The currently supported method is via iCloud. Setup instructions: http://www.apple.com/icloud/setup/

  • I'm embarrassed to ask this: when I click to initiate a new email message in the "From" box it automatically chooses the wrong email address (I have three but use one mainly). How can I get the right choice to appear automatically?

I'm embarassed to ask this: when I click on the new mail icon to write a new email message, in the box "FROM" appears the wrong email address: I have three but mainly use one. How can I correct this so that the right email address appears in the "FROM" box?

I assume this is Apple Mail. Try this:
    Preferences > Accounts > your-first-account
Select Outgoing Mail Server of account/name you wish to use and check Use only this server
    Repeat for other accounts.

  • How can I get the Scripts icon to appear in Mail?

I have recently installed some Mail scripts that are found in a Mail Scripts folder within Applications. There are also other Mail scripts that I can see, along with a bunch of other scripts, when I click on the Scripts icon in Finder.  Why isn't there a Scripts icon within Mail as in all other applications?  How do I run any of the Mail scripts if they can't be accessed within that application?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Hello, the Mail Scripts you want to see & use should be in...
    /Library/Scripts/Mail Scripts
You can attach a script to a Mail rule to enable actions by other applications or to increase the flexibility of existing actions. For example, you could set up a rule where an incoming message triggers a script that copies information from the message and then enters it into a database that works with AppleScript.
To attach an AppleScript script to a rule:
Choose Mail > Preferences, and then click Rules.
Add a rule or select an existing rule to edit.
Create or modify conditions as necessary.
From the “Perform the following actions” pop-up menu, choose Run AppleScript.
Click Choose, locate your saved script, and then click Choose File.
Click OK to save the rule.
Do you have the Scripts Menu shiwing in the Menubar?

  • How do I get the song titles to appear when I burn a playlist from iTunes?

I burned a playlist from iTunes, and the song titles on the burned CD changed to Track 1, Track 2, Track 3, etc. How can I get the song titles to appear as they do in iTunes? Is this really too much to ask from the world's leading music player software?

If you are burning an audio CD, you cannot as audio CDs do not have track names. Nothing to do with Apple.

I have made a burn folder with photos exported from I-photo.  It now shows in information, that the date  created and modified is different from the original digitized date.  How can I get the original date to show in the info from Finder?

The Finder reports File information. The date and time of the photo are in the Photo's Exif metadata. The Finder has no awareness of this. All photos apps on any system do.

I accidentally erased a music album that I purchased on iTunes. How can I get the iTunes store to recognize that it is no longer in my iTunes library and download it again?

Delete the broken links in iTunes then look at your purchased list to redownload.
If this happened because you were deleting files from the iTunes folder in Finder, don't.  You have to let iTunes do all the deleting and moving or you will end up with broken links.

I upgraded to iPhoto 11, the thumbnail photos show my previous edits, but when I click on the photo to make it bigger, it reverts back to the unedited, original picture.  How can I get the edited pictures from the thumbnails to full size?

Verify you are using iPhoto11 ver 9.5
if not run the >Software update or check your apps folder and make sure the correct iPhoto is launched,  not an older ver.

  • How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?

    Hi, here's a question:
How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?
The whole point being not to have to install all my apps, and move all my files each time between users.
The second thing would be to be able to modify one document on one account, and have it changed on the other account without having to copy it.
I would like to have a pro and a private account on my mac.
    Thanks for you answers,
    Doug

Your apps should not be installed in your home folder--they should be in /Applications where every user can access them.
If you want to share things between users on the same Mac, use the /Users/Shared folder. Keep your home folder private. Trying to defeat the protections on the home folder subfolders just gets messy. I've never bothered to figure out all of the problems associated with it so I can't explain how to do it.
Even with using Shared, you would need to alter the ACLs on the shared folder in order to allow both users to modify the documents.
You must create a Group in Users & Groups and put each user in that group. Then create a folder inside /Users/Shared where you want to share the various files.
Then, add an ACL to the shared folder that gives the group special permissions. on that folder.
    sudo chmod -R +a "<sharinggroup> allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/<sharing folder>
Replace <sharinggroup> and <sharingfolder> with the name of your group and your folder. Then, run the command in the Terminal.
With that ACL, each user in <sharinggroup> will be able to alter the files created by any user in the group in that <sharingfolder>.
Essentially, the client OS is not designed for true file sharing among the individual users. It is designed to isolate each user account from the others.
