Try this.
Open the document and select and copy a few pages, say ten pages.
Open a new blank document and paste the pages you copied into that.
Save it with a new name.
Work on those new pages to see if the problem has disappeared.
If this helps, continue breaking up the large file in to smaller chunks and working on them
You can of course later reverse the process and merge the files into one new one.
This suggestion is based on my experiences with large Word files. Breaking it up in to smaller chunks does two things. First, if there is any corruption in the old file, the new copies might escape that. Second, the Mac is faster handling the smaller chunks.

Cannot get past the country/region dialog box because the list will not allow me to select the United States as the place where I live. The list is too long and no way to get to the bottom to select the United States!!! I can't get into Premiere Element 13.

Let us start with
1. Is the computer operating system Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit? If it is and you are installing Premiere Elements 13, then the program files will go by default to Local Disk C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Premiere Elements 13 as the default location. If you have a computer that is using other than Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, then it will not. Another question is, when your drives were set up, was the SSD drive designated the C drive?
2. From what you wrote, I understood that you were using your installation files or installation disc to install the program, but were getting stopped very early in the installation process because you could not set the country/language. Typically that setting is done while you are starting the installation. One of the early dialog boxes that you get in that process is named Choose Setup Language (or something like that). That is where I believed you could not set the country/language. Is that the place to which you were referring or some place else?
3. You do not need to uninstall Premiere Elements 10 to install and run Premiere Elements 13. Just use one program at a time.
Typically 32 bit applications in a 64 bit computer operating system run in the 32 bit compatibility mode of the 64 bit system. And, these 32 bit applications program files will be in Program Files (x86) Folder. The 64 bit applications program files would be in Program Files. With regard to Premiere Elements 10, some of its files may be found in Program Files and Program Files (x86).
But, the main focus now is getting Premiere Elements 13 installed to the default location on the Local Disk C/Program Files/Adobe/Adobe Premiere Elements 13 during the installation process after you designate the country/language and are given a country dependent NTSC or PAL system with which to work.
From a quick look at 13 installation on Windows 7 64 bit, the first installation dialog that mentions language with country implications is
This is for Premiere Elements 13 on Windows 7 or 8.1 64 bit. Since you say that the United States is further down the list in your case, I suspect this is not the place where you are having problems. Note the default location in this Options dialog. Did you leave that as is or change it to something else?
Are you having these issues when you get to the Sign In dialog or some place else?
Please consider and then let us decide what next.

Thanks for your answer - The images on the top layer are also links and change to show they're links on rollover - so I wanted to keep them as separate graphics - and it works to a point but when I preview the page in a browser the tiled browser image always moves no matter how I pin it and then everything becomes unaligned. Restore from the iCloud backup - assuming that you were backing up to iCloud in the first place. If you weren't using iCloud for backup - then you are out of luck.
If you were backing up to iCloud - you have to erase all contents on the iPad in Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and settings - before you can restore from the iCloud backup.

Sorry, yes. When I asked "how do I transfer it to Pages for editing?" I perhaps should have made it clear that I have purchased it. I can also create documents in it and send them as a Word document to others via email.
Could you clarify "When you get the email, click on the Word Document to view it." The email appears in the Inbox list but does not show an attachment in the same way it does on my Mac. If I tap the email, it opens and reveals the contents including the Word document contents. At what point am I looking for an arrow - in the email list or in the opened and readable Word document?

I have to burn a Word document onto a disk for a friend who is using either PC or a Mac. It will eventually go to a publisher. I haven't burned a .doc in ages and can't remember how to do it. Do I want to use a CD-R and not a DVD-R? Also can I use Toast and choose the PC option or should I use Disk Utility? If disk utility how do I do it? I just want to make sure it will work on a PC if that is what will be used to extract it?

IT's a non-issue, assuming you have recent versions of OSx and MS Office. Just use the Finder to burn the disc. PC Word reads Mac Word just fine, with some rare exceptions.
-insert blank CD-R, because they are the cheapest, unless your Word doc is more than 700MB.
-drag .doc document into the mounted, untitled CD-R icon.
-using any of several methods (which can vary a bit depending on your OS), use the Finder to burn the CD-R. One way is to click once on the CDR icon, then go to the FInder/File menu and select Burn CD. In OSX.5.x, there are Burn commands in the window for the CDR (i.e. double click on the CDR icon for the root window).
A window should open, asking if you want to burn this disc so that any computer (Mac or PC) can read it.

I'm trying to make "ctrl-f" a shortcut key in my program.
I know I can do this as a JMenuItem by:
menuItem.setAccelerator(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_F, KeyEvent.CTRL_MASK));
However, I would rather not have it in the menu.
How would I do this without having it as a JMenuItem?
