How can I identify the cause of high CPU usage

Just recently, my Mac Book Pro CPU usage has gone through the roof, and the temperature quickly rises to around 80ºC, with the fans are working pretty hard to keep it there.
I've looked in Activity Monitor, but there's nothing unusual as far as I can tell in the list of processes, but it does show that the system is continually using between 30% and 40% of the CPU all the time, even if I have no applications running. From a cold start, it starts using that much CPU as soon as OSX loads.
Here's a screen grab of the activity monitor window
One thing I thought was strange is the amount of Virtual Memory that Growl uses (37gb) but according to the growl website, that's not unusual. I've also tried quitting Growl, but it makes no difference.
I have 30GB of free space left on my HD.
Any ideas? I'm worried my Mac Book might be on it's last legs, so I'm hoping and praying that this is something simple-ish.
thanks

  • How can I identify the cause of a Script Error

We have a client who has been using Contribute for a few years and who has reported that they are constantly getting a Script Error message when using Contribute to edit pages.
This message has only started to show in the last week or so despite there not having been any revisions to the site template (that I'm aware of).
The message seems to be appearing when visiting most if not all pages on the site.
I've looked at the scripts used in the site but can't identify anything with reference to MM_swapimage in Line: 1 Char: 1
Can anyone give suggestions for solving this issue or at least to stop the error message from conatantly appearing?
Screen shot of the message attached for reference.

You can try installing IE 9. Since Contribute uses the latest version of IE installed in the machine as its embedded browser, this issue might be solved.

  • How can i identify the environment name or database name in the PL/SQL code

    Hi,
I am using UTL_FILE to genearate the files.,
My problem is, I have to design the common sql file , which can be executed in 2 diffrent environments ( Say QA & DEV ) , with no parameters. It has to identify the environment and based on the environment , it has to generate the concern files.,
The only change needs to be incorporated is , file names , which will change based on the environment.,
can nay one tell me , how can i identify the environment name or database name in the PL/SQL code ??

In this case, USEC_GI_DEV.NA.XXXNET.NET is a TNS alias. That alias exists only on the client machine. There is no way to access that information on the database server.
You would have to find something in the v$database or v$instance table that uniquely identifies the database (and you may need some help from the DBAs to do this because you need to ensure that the data element you choose is compatible with whatever refresh process(es) are used in your environment).
Now, if you are writing a stand-alone SQL*Plus script, SQL*Plus, as a client tool, does have access to the TNS alias in later versions. But that is a client-side determination, not a server-side determination.

You can refer Table KNKK with reference to Credit Control Area, you will get all the Customers maintained for Credit Management.
There is no such Accounting Entries especially for Credit Management. It would be the same as comes while creating Invoice.

Eliminate a Wifi issue by connecting a Ethernet cable directly to your router or modem (power off/on)
If your still having beachball issues, what I suspect has occured (which a lot of people mistakenly do) is the hard drive got sectors damaged when the computer was moved/bumped while it was in operation.
The fix for this (and anything else) is rather drastic, all user data off the Macintosh HD will have to be removed, the entire partition Disk Utility > Erase with Secure Zero (or middle selection option), OS X reinstalled and updated, programs reinstalled and files returned.
If one has a previous uneffected bootable clone or TimeMachine backup that can be used to restore.

  • How can we identify the coupon code that triggered the promotion discount in the order?

    Hi,
As we can create the coupons and assign the promotions to them to give discounts. How can we identity the coupon code that is added the promotion which caused the discount in the order?
    Regards,
    Chede

I'm giving you an example. Here is how you do it starting with order level promotions. OrderImpl object API below give you orderpirceinfo and second link gives adjustments.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35319_01/Platform.10-2/apidoc/atg/commerce/order/OrderImpl.html#getPriceInfo()
From OrderPriceInfo which extends AmountInfo, the following method gives adjustments
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E35319_01/Platform.10-2/apidoc/atg/commerce/pricing/AmountInfo.html#getAdjustments()
Now iterate through adjustments, to get pricingmodel(which is promotion) and coupon applied on order
    PricingAdjustment (ATG Java API)

Hope this gives you an idea where to start with.

  • How could i get the kernel and user cpu usage for each process

    Hi all,
In order to monitor the system CPU usage, I would like write a script to gather the kernel and user CPU usage for each process, like the prstat or top does. As always missing the shortlived kernel usage, prstat or top cann't get the precise CPU usage. I checked with the dtrace syscall, proc and fbt provider, but don't get which one is useful.
Please provide your comments and suggestion.
    Thanks in adv

    mail2sleepy wrote:
As I've studied the "dtrace" for a while, and seems Sun gives a pretty high score on this new feature.....I do want to know whether there's some probe can work for it, like writing a "dtrace" version prstat. You can write a prstat without dtrace. Because that's just polling at specific intervals and reading some process structures from /proc. You could have dtrace fire a probe every 5 seconds and read the same thing, but it wouldn't really be using any features of dtrace. Trhying to write it "in dtrace" doesn't make much sense.
What you could do that would be harder via other methods is to fire a probe at process exit that displayed the process information including total CPU time. They could print exactly when processes exited. Doing that without dtrace would be very difficult.

  • How can I identify the IP address of a device on my LAN?

If I attach a device to my LAN but have no idea of its IP address (ie it may not even be communicating), is it possible to identify its static address?  Or will it only respond (to something like nmap) if the route of the transmitting device device is correct?
For instance, my PC is 192.168.0.4 and its default route is 192.168.0.1.  If I attach another router that has an address of 192.168.1.254, how can I determine that its physically connected?   Using nmap -PR 192.168.0.0/16 for host discovery doesn't reveal its there unless I change the default route to (something like) 192.168.1.1

  • How can we identify the location from which a map is run, in the map ?

    Hi,
I have a map that moves data from source system into the target system.
I have two locations in the project (PROD_SOURCE and PROD_TARGET).
My map picks the source table from PROD_SOURCE location and inserts into the target table in PROD_TARGET location.
Now, this map can be deployed by changing the source location.
In my map, I want to find out the location and subsequently the source database from which the map was run. This has to be inserted into a table
    Any pointers?
    -Pushkala

You can always query the data dictionary in a pre- or post- mapping procedure.
    e.g.:
    select dep.owner, dep.object_name
    FROM PUBLIC_DEPENDENCY pd,
    all_objects dep,
    all_objects src
    where pd.object_id = src.object_id
    and pd.referenced_object_id = dep.object_id
    and dep.object_Type = 'TABLE'
    and src.owner = 'ERS_CTRL3X'
    AND src.object_name = 'TEST_MAP'
    AND src.object_type = 'PACKAGE BODY'
will give me the listed owner of all tables referenced in this mapping. Knowing the table name, I would have access to the owner name. Now, whether you also will need to query agains all_db_links to see where a given db link is pointing to resolve the owner etc, or all_synonyms to resolve local synonyms to the db_link that they operate against etc I do not know. But tracing the dependancy tree from the current runtime copy of the package will get you to what you need.

  • How can I define the cause of this problem?

    Hi guys,
    LKM Oracle to SQL
    IKM informix incremental update
    Source : ORACLE
    Target : INFORMIX
    - This process work across internet network (lease line).
    - Have to update a large amount of data ,around 500,000 rows, from source to target
    - Target has existing data around 70 million rows
    Here is the problem,
When update process was executed it won't complete in step update flag useless row.
In the opeator windows,It will show in the thunder icon which mean it still in processing.
In the mean while, the target database seesion was already dead (missing).
This process has take a long time I think, may be 4-5 hrs.
So I could not detect any point of this process that ......
this is come from network issue or come from a bug of software or something else.
    In my opinion,
something wrong on the process "update flag useless row" because it take too long time. Then after it's finish "update flag useless row" step.(I know that this step already finish because i already check on the target database that the flag has been completely updated). It cannot send some signal back to ODI to update status in the repository that this step already finish. So It could not execute a next step.
    Any ideas,
    Many thanks in advance.

Try booting in Safe mode. This page tells you how to do that and how it works:

  • How can I use the Windows 7 high contrast theme with CS6?

I prefer using a high contrast theme in Windows, as I find it reduces eye strain, unfortunately these themes don't work in InDesign CS6 (i've tested Illustrator, Dreamweaver and PS and they seem to handle the high contrast theme ok, but this forum doesn't quite like it either, but that could just be because I'm forced to use IE at work here)
Any text within dialogue boxes is black, and the toolbars and windows are pretty much unusable too.
Is there any way around this issue?

I see the same thing using a High Contrast theme. I think you're in uncharted territory here as far as what's been discussed previously on the forum, but maybe one of our other users also is a high contrast aficianado and has figured something out.
