How can I import an mkv to iMovie '09 8.0.5?

I need to edit a video using iMovie, but it's in mkv format. Is there a no-cost way to convert the file to something like mov or mp4 so I can import it? I can't use websites like BenderConverter, as the file is over 100mb.

You could try converting the mkv file using MPEG Streamclip, but I can't guarantee Streamclip can handle it. If it can, convert to Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).
It is a free program from Squared 5 available here:

How can I import a movie into iMovie 09 from a hard drive?  The movie will open and play in idvd but breaks into separate files that can't be downloaded when I try to import.  Can it be done? I am trying to create a disc of player highlights for a collegiate coach, and I am using movie files downloaded to my hard drive from a DVD created on a PC.

No unfortunately it won't open in quicktime either.  It does the same thing that Imovie does, separates it into two file folders audio and video, and if i select video it opens to reveal 8 files that cannot be selected.  VIDEO_TS.BUP, VIDEO_TS.IFO, VIDEO_TS.VOB,VTS_01_0.BUP, VTS_01_0.IFO, VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_01_2.VB, VTS_01_3.VOB.  All of which cannot be opened or selected.
Opening it in Idvd and folllowing your suggestion works and I get a format code of NTSC.  Is that the same?  Thank you for your time and response.

  • How can I import vob files into imovie 09?

how can I import vob files into imovie 09? i have some home movies on dvd that i want to edit.

You might want to look at this one too.  Very easy to use and it doesn't require the Apple MPEG-2 playback component.

how can i import mpeg files into iMovie?

    Where are your MPEG stored?
I have hundreds of old MPEGs stored in my nexternal drive, but unfortunatly i was not able import them into iMovie. I did the following trick: I created a new set of a folder and subfolder and called it "Virtual_CAM/DCIM" and saved it on my desktop. Then went to Disk Utilities>File Menue>New>Disk Image from Folder. Then selected the folder on my desktop and clicked enter. I moved the .dmg file to my external (or just keep it on your desktop). I clicked on the .dmg file. It shoud be visible on the Finder. Open your Imovie and import as you do from your camera.

  • Help! How can I import camcorder video to imovie on my computer?

I have a G4 tower, running Leopard 10.5.8. I have a Sony Camcorder Handycam HDD Hybrid DCR-SR45. When I plug in the camcorder to computer the imovie does not launch to import. The computer does recognize that I plugged in my camcorder (icon shows up on my desktop), and when I open that file, and click on a file in the folder of video footage taken today, a window pops up that reads "The movie could not be opened. The file is not a movie file". How can I import today's video footage into imovie? Help! Homework project due Tuesday.

I tried, but when I hit import there is no option that says "import from camera". The driver that shows up on my desktop when I plug in the camcorder reads "no name". When I try to drag the video files into an open window of imovie an error message pops up reading "Error during import", "The file could not be imported;the file ""/volumes/Noname/MP_root/101PNVo1/MZU00001.MPG" Can't be imported. Quicktime could not parse it:-2048
What else can I try? Thx.

  • I have 8mm family footage now on a DVD how can I import this material into imovie

Can anyone help I have old 8mm footage of the family which is now on a DVD how can I import this onto imovie?

You need to convert the DVD .VOB files. This can be done with Apps like Handbrake or I prefer MPEG Steamclip.
Basically what you do is insert the DVD into the drive. If DVD Player opens, quit the player. Then double click the DVD on the desktop. There you will find a folder called Video_TS. The .VOB files are there. You do not need the Audio_TS files or Folder.  So what ever App you use, point them to that Folder and convert them to highest quality conversion.
One thing to point out though about MPEG Streamclip, you need to have Quicktime 7 installed and additionally you need a file called QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component. Make sure you read about it at the Squared 5 website under "Requirements". It may sound like alot of work, but once you set it up MPEG Streamclips works nice.
    Hope that gets you started.
Additionally, if you have another machine around with Leopard or earlier, you may already have the MPEG-2 Playback Component. It would be located in /Library/Quicktime folder.

  • How can I import idvd back to imovie?

How do I erase audio on idvd project?  Looking to separate audio from video, and apply new audio. Using 10.6.8 macbook air, Processor 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.   Using imovie 11, 9.0.4, idvd 7.1.2.  Could not import to imovie. I am grateful to all suggestions.

Okay, this can still be done.
A DVD is a highly compressed video format. However, tools do exist to uncompress it and get it into an editable file. I've had to do this myself on a couple of occasions when the only thing people had was a DVD.
The software below is what I use.  It will create a video file that should load into QuickTime 7 or QuickTime Pro, allowing you to eliminate the audio as described by Old Toad above.
I use it with iMovie 06 (and a few times with iMovie 11) and iDVD 11. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".

By the way, I am pretty good with movie editing using iMovie HD 06 and sometimes the newer versions of iMovie.  Old Toad is a much better expert than I regarding video.   He has helped me countless times.   However, others here can help you as well. Unfortunately, the iDVD section is not visited as often as it used to be. Once you have a working video file you might try posting in the iMovie or QuickTime areas as these are visited more often by experts.

  • How can I import an m4v movie from my desktop to my event Library in iMovie?

How can I import an m4v movie from my desktop to my event Library in iMovie?  I want to include the m4v movie into another project in iMovie.

When you import DV Stream from tape, iMovie 11 will assume that you are importing raw footage from a camera, rather than a finished movie. It will create a new clip everytime it detects a scene break (the record start/stop button was pressed). These clips will be placed in chronolgical order - not the order they were on the tape.
One way around this is to import the tape into the application that you used to create it. For example, if you used iMovie 6, import the tape back into imovie 6. In iMovie 6, you can export the tape back out using FILE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME. Choose the DV codec in an MOV container.  You can then import this MOV file into iMovie 11 and have everything in the proper order for your finished movie.
Another option is to use FInal Cut Pro X.
