I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Can I install a new operating system using a USB optical drive?

My Mac is out of date, I'm still running 10.5.8 but have the Snow Leopard disk to update my operating system to 10.6.3. However, my built-in optical drive is broken so I use a USB powered optical drive. So, when I start the process of installing the new operating software, will the MAC direct itself to my USB drive to boot when necessary?

Thanks for the replies. Just to clarify, because I'm on 10.5.8 I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard using a dvd disk, which I have. I cannot upgrade to any other more recent operating system until I'm on Snow Leopard, so that's the first thing to do.
So, just to clarify further, I have a DVD drive that plugs into 2 USB ports that I use to burn and read DVDs, ever since the inbuilt DVD drive on my iMac started sticking disks inside.
So...I'm really looking for the best way to do this upgrade with what I have...I don't know whether the Mac will find the disk if it is on the plugged in portable DVD drive rather than the inbuilt DVD drive....
    Any advice greatly appreciated...

  • I have OS X Version 10.5.8...how do i install the new operating system?

I have OS X Version 10.5.8 and I am trying to download the newer version of i-tunes however it says that I need a new version of the os but I cannot figure out how to update my OS?  Please help!

The first step in Upgrading... is to Snow Leopard = OS X 10.6.x
It is Not available as a download... It is a Paid Upgrade.
    Do this first...
Check that your Mac meets the System Requirements for Snow Leopard...
    Snow Leopard Tech Specs
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
If so... Purchase a Snow Leopard Install Disc...
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After the Successful Install, run Software Update to get the latest updates for Snow Leopard and iTunes.
Be sure to make a Backup of your Current System Before Upgrading...

  • I am selling my Mac Mini. I recently purchased OS X Lion. When I restore to factory settings, how can I ensure that the operating system will still be Lion, and not the original operating system, which I believe was Snow Leopard?

I am selling my Mac Mini. I recently purchased OS X Lion. When I restore to factory settings, how can I ensure that the operating system will still be Lion, and not the original operating system, which I believe was Snow Leopard?

If you bought Lion from the App Store, you can't legally or practically transfer it, because it's tied to your Apple ID. Reinstall the original software from the discs that came with the machine.

Laptop died and I can't deactivate LR. How can I install on new laptop?

Lightroom doesn’t have a formal activation process like Photoshop, although Adobe may be tracking something since they do want you to log in during the registration process.  I’m not sure.
In general your license allows you to install it on up to two computers as long as you’re only ever using one at a time, so just download and install the latest update for LR on your new laptop and enter the serial number(s) or login to CC, whichever licensing model of LR you have.  CC does have a two-computer limit, but if you install on a third computer you’ll be asked to deactivate the other two and then only ever login to CC on the other computer that you want to license and it’ll be fine.
You can get the latest update to whatever LR series you have from the Adobe Updates page:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates
You will need to find your serial number(s).  If you registered LR with Adobe then they should be available online after logging in to adobe.com and a few clicks into Manage account.

  • I lost all my Bookmorks after installing a new operating system.

I have just obtained a new PC and installed Windows 7 Ultimate in 64 Bit. And as is usual for me DESPITE backing up etc the whole shebang blew up in my face! the back up failed and I had to re-install again! So question is I have the OLD operating system on the OLD HD so I can find things. So how do I find the old bookmarks etc. and move same to my NEW HD and so enjoy my old settings? Indeed is it possible to install AL of the old settings from the older copy of Firefox on my old drive? If so and it is a relatively easy thing to do please feel free to ridicule me but do at least offer to help? :-)
    Regards
    chris

No, that file won't help you.
Look for your Firefox Profile folder on the old HDD, and copy specific files from the old Profile folder and replace the new version of each file in the new Profile folder. This support article will explain it more completely. <br />

  • MY ITUNES SHUT AS IT WAS INSTALLING A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM

as i was installing the new IOS 4.3.10 on my iphone, my itunes randomly shut its self down and now my iphone is stuck with out an operating system WHAT DO I DO?

More likely the problem is that you are trying to install 4.3.10 on a CDMA phone (assuming your category is correct). The latest version for the CDMA phone is 4.2.8. Normally iTunes won't even let you start installing the wrong version, so you are probably doing it by an unauthorized method.

  • How can i install the new Yosemite 10.10.3 Beta

Hello guys , I heard that some people installed the pre releaseed Yosemit 10.10.3 update and I wonder how can can I download and install it ? P.s I have recently updated my OS X to 10.10.2 which ruined my wifi and currently my wifi doesn't work so I'm thinkin that installing this new update might solve my problem.

Before releasing a public beta to Beta Program participants, Apple seeds the "developer's only version" to those registered as Mac Developers.
So, we'll have to wait a little longer before we start using 10.10.3.
    Cheers.

  • Will installing a new operating system make the warranty void

I just bought a HP G3 200 Series 250 Core i3 from Indian online store. The current operating system is free DOS and i want to install windows 8 on it. Will that make my warranty void ?

Hi: Doing that will not void the hardware warranty but HP will not offer any software support if you install another operating system. Bear in mind that there are no W8 64 bit drivers for that model, so I suggest you upgrade to W8.1 after you install W8 or install W7 64 bit.

  • I recently installed the new operating system.  iMovie doesn't seem to work the same as in Mountain Lion.  I can't figure out how to burn a movie to a DVD.  Has that feature been eliminated?

I am having difficulty figuring out how to burn my iMovie to a DVD.  Has that feature been eliminated?

unbelievable... the amount of RAM is the issue... I found a post (http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=soundblaster&message.id=8448) on an unrelated matter, but the user solved their issue under X64 by limiting the amount of RAM WinXP x64 was using by editing the boot.ini file.
The basis of the "trick" is to add " /maxmem=4096" to the end of your OS line, but I elected to copy the line and add it to a new entry so I could easily select which "mode" i wanted at boot.... like so...
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition()\WINDOWS="Window s XP Professional x64 Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition()\WINDOWS="Window s XP Professional x64 Edition - X-Fi tweak" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /maxmem=4096
amazingly this solved my issue... but now my system properties only report 2Gb instead of 4Gb... unacceptable!
When Can I expect a fix for this Creative?
