How can i keep from crashing?

early version cs5 blues. I keep getting crashes in After effects doing simple things like importing or clicking on windows or exporting. I tried saving my assets to another file and it still crashes. there isnt anything exotic in these comps, save for some blurs.
I just installed a script that makes creating solids cams etc faster (get sh*t done from ae scripts) and that may be causing a conflict.
I also get another strange crash where my screen starts to flicker and everything except the mouse, freezes. I have to hard press reboot.
It happens sometimes when i scrub the timeline.
I am also getting AE Open GL crashes. I bumped up the texture ram to 80% as per the adobe trouble shooting doc.
I also have CS3 loaded on here (for backup of course) and i dont know if the plists are causing some conflicts. I dont know if i should trash them?

Macpro 2.66 ghz quad-core
8GB of ram
Gforce GT-120
OS 10.6.4
150GB on my system drive free
150 GB on my project drive free
All cs5 applications are updated.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. I think i may not have my settings in proper order and would love to hear suggestions on how to optimize AE.

My 5 year old iMac's hard drive is at the point of failing. I'm trying to save al files on it, but it wont allow backup via Time Machine to an external hard drive. How can I keep from losing all the files and programs if the hard drive fails?

I'm concerned that my iMac, purchased 5 years ago, is about the crash and I can't back up my files and programs to an external hard drive via Time Machine because the computer freezes after only a couple hundred MB and gets nowhere near the required amount.
How can I save these files and programs if the computer hard drive fails or has to be replaced without the backup being able to be done? I need to do something quickly, but I'm not sure what I can or should be doing.

Get an external hard drive, some good ones that I like are the OWC, http://www.macsales.com Mercury Elite Pro drives...they are very good and reasonably priced.
Get the drive, connect via USB or FireWire, then use Disk Utility to format the new drive as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled), and then use Disk Utility to Restore the current drive to the new drive. Restore actually clones the drive so you will have a bootable backup on the external drive.
After you have formatted and named the external drive, click Restore in the main Disk Utility window, drag the name of the old hard drive to the Source box, and drag the name of the new external drive to the Destination box. DU will make an exact clone of the internal drive on the external drive.
That clone will be a complete backup of the operating system and all of your data.
You can test it by restarting the iMac and hold the Option key. That will give you a grey screen showing all bootable drives. Just click the external drive, then click the upward pointing arrow under it and the iMac will boot from that drive.

Every time I restart my computer, Firefox makes me "re-activeate" or "re-enable" my add-on's . This is a major pain, and is at the point where I am about to dump FF and move to Chrome. How can I stop the insanity.

What may be going on is that something is preventing Firefox from saving that preference and so it keeps triggering the prompt. Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information and click the Show Folder button next to "Profile Directory". Look for a file called prefs.js -- right click on it and select properties. Make sure it's not read-only or locked in any way.
There are other suggestions in the [[Preferences are not saved]] article if that doesn't help.

I am setting up an iPhone for the first time on iTunes. I am trying to prepare for moving to the iCloud from me.com.

- selected sync apps to be able to select all apps in left pane, but did not apply sync

How in the world do you get iTunes to save the apps & data that you have without having what you have wiped out?
I don't have anything but the following:
- apps + data
- contacts
- email
- calendar
- photos
I have no songs, videos or other media. I have only what is on the iPhone. I am NOT trying to wipe it out or put info on it from my computer. I just want to upgrade the iPhone to the latest iOS and preserve what I have on the iPhone. Is this an unusual expectation? Why does iTunes wipe the iPhone when it syncs? Shouldn't I have to somehow delete something without it automatically being deleted?
It is like having a living, breathing NIGHTMARE!
Can someone please advise me the steps to take to do this?

The otterbox is one of the culprits. Take the phone out of the case and see if it still happens. If so it is not the case. If the problem goes away, then you may need to make the hole slightly larger. My family has three iPhone 4's in otterboxes and none have this problem. Other users on this forum have reported success with the above methods.

I receive most of my emails twice. When I delete one, they are both deleted.

This could be an issue with @mac.com, @me.com and @icloud.com adresses.
These addresses are the same, mail will be received double, but when you remove 1 of them, all 3 will be affected.
When you only have 2 of these (me.com/icloud.com), it happens too, but than with 2 duplicates instead of 3.

My computer with my original library has crashed, how can i keep all the songs on my iphone, but still add new songs from my new library?

My computer has died and will not be working ever again. Problem is, i have all of my songs on that computer in my itunes library as well as on my phone. It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion. Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything on the new one.
If for some reason you have failed to backup, big mistake, then you can transfer itunes purchases from the iphone to the computer: File>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to buy a 3rd party program to get any other music off of the iphone ( not supported by Apple).
When you sync the iphone, it will erase the current content and replace with content form the new computer.

TeresaBoo, I empathize with your dilemma and have a similar problem. I'm trying desperately to keep my teenage daughter away from a controlling and abusive boyfriend. Of course, she is in denial and thinks it's love. Sure, I can block text messages through our wireless provider, but iMessages run on an independent network. I can block a phone number from iMessaging on her phone, but she can unblock it just as easily. I wish there was some way for parents to create a password to protect settings. Now I am back on my Mac. I meant the following: Batch Change the date for a large range of photos, that should have a date stepped in increments.
Select all Photos at once and use the command "Photos > Batch Change".
Then set the date for the first photo and select an increment, e.g. one minute.
Now all photos will get a new date assigned, incremented by one minute, in the sequence you have selected. So you will be able to sort them by date. This way it will be unnecessary to change the titles or filenames.

Thanks for you reply. When I paint, I bring up the photo as you suggested. I begin painting. After about 10 minutes or so, the photo goes blank. And, I have to start the process over again to get that same photo. It interrupts the painting process. I think it goes blank due to a sleep function. Go to MacUpdate or CNET Downloads and search for ds_store. There are numerous utilities for preventing them from being transferred to Windows systems.
