How can I keep tabs on the file size when importing from the Event Library into a Project? I want to ensure the movie will fit onto a 4.7Gb disc?

iDVD does not care about file sizes, as it compresses the file to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
It only cares about length i.e. max 2 hours including titles etc.
iDVD encoding settings:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/11417.html
Short version:
Best Performance is for videos of up to 60 minutes
Best Quality is for videos of up to 120 minutes
Professional Quality is also for up to 120 minutes but even higher quality (and takes much longer)
Professional Quality: The Professional Quality option uses advanced technology to encode your video, resulting in the best quality of video possible on your burned DVD. You can select this option regardless of your project’s duration (up to 2 hours of video for a single-layer disc and 4 hours for a double-layer disc). Because Professional Quality encoding is time-consuming (requiring about twice as much time to encode a project as the High Quality option, for example) choose it only if you are not concerned abo
In both cases the maximum length includes titles, transitions and effects etc. Allow about 15 minutes for these.
You can use the amount of video in your project as a rough determination of which method to choose. If your project has an hour or less of video (for a single-layer disc), choose Best Performance. If it has between 1 and 2 hours of video (for a single-layer disc), choose High Quality. If you want the best possible encoding quality for projects that are up to 2 hours (for a single-layer disc), choose Professional Quality. This option takes about twice as long as the High Quality option, so select it only if time is not an issue for you.
Use the Capacity meter in the Project Info window (choose Project > Project Info) to determine how many minutes of video your project contains.
NOTE: With the Best Performance setting, you can turn background encoding off by choosing Advanced > “Encode in Background.” The checkmark is removed to show it’s no longer selected. Turning off background encoding can help performance if your system seems sluggish.
And whilst checking these settings in iDVD Preferences, make sure that the settings for NTSC/PAL and DV/DV Widescreen are also what you want.

  • Photo files size when importing from camera, uploading to facebook

    When I import photos from my camera to iPhoto, then upload them to facebook, they are not the original size. This is my first mac and first time to use iPhoto so maybe that's normal. Is there a setting I need to change? How do I know if the files I have imported are being saved on my computer with their original specs? I am hesitant to clear the pics from my camera, fearing I might lose their original quality!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    As for facebook, when using my old pc the photos remained the original size after uploading. It wasn't until I used iPhoto that they began to upload in a smaller version.
    Are you referring to file size as in KB or MB or image size as in pixel dimension. As Terence pointed out I doubt if Facebook will accept a full image files at the original size. Most are in the MB range and Facebook would run out of storage space in no time.
    It might very well be that iPhoto will resize the pixel dimension of the photos to a "standard" size for uploading and Facebook then downsizes the actual file size. That means compressing the file to make a smaller file but not a smaller image.

  • Importing my video from my event library into my project library, it shows the full width of the clip, but on the viewing section, it's zoomed in and cut the sides of the video off.  How do I stop this from happening?

    When importing my video from the event library to the project library, it's zooming in and
    narrowing the width of my footage.  How do I stop this from happening?

    In the project, double-click on the clip to open the Clip Inspector. In the Clip tab you will see an item about two thirds down labelled "Stabilization". If checked, uncheck the box "Smooth clip motion".
    Stabilizing clips causes a zoomed in effect, with the extent of the zoom dependent upon how shaky the footage is. There is a slider beneath the check-box labelled "Maximum Zoom" - this can be draggged back and forth to adjust the zoom effect if desired, once the clip has been stabilized.
    You may have chosen to analyze clips for stabilization when importing to iMovie (that's a choice provided by iMovie upon import). If so, it's best to turn off an option in iMovie's preferences. Go to this from the iMovie menu item iMovie>Preferences. Click on the Browser tab and deselect (uncheck) the box labelled "Automatically stabilize clips that have been analyzed".
    I prefer to import clips without analyzing, as this speeds up the import process. Afterwards, in the Event you can check for any overly shaky clips, then analyze them in the Inspector. If necessary, once dropped into a Project, you can stabilize them as desired. You can also stabilize clips directly in the Project without having to first analyze them in the Event.

  • How can I keep my RAW photo files from converting to JPEG???

    How can I keep my RAW photo files from converting to JPEG???

    Hello briggiebunny
    If iTunes can read the movie files, then you will need to create an iPad version by going to the drop down menu File > Create New Version > Create iPad or Apple TV Version and then syncing that newly created file.
    iTunes: Videos may be unable to sync to iPhone, iPad, or iPod

    I'm no longer able to select the file size when emailing a photo. How can I solve this? iPhone 4S with iOS 7.1.1. Thanks a lot.

    Yeah - I tried that, several times; each time I get "iTunes is restoring the software on this iPhone" and after about 30 minutes the screen on the phone lights up again with the same screen I had before.  After that ... nothing.

  • How can I reduce the file size when saving a psd as a pdf

    I have a psd with graphics and text, it is 8.5 x 11, 300 ppi
    I flatten the image and go to save as .pdf I un-check all of the options in general.
    In compression, I have tried a dozen different combinations and the way I've found to get a document that is not pixelated or blurry is to use jpeg 2000 > lossless or jpeg > maximum.
    So I have a high quality document but the file sizes are around 900 kb.
    I have downloaded other people's documents of the exact same type and size (8.5 x 11, 300 ppi) that I am making and viewed them in Photoshop, they are not pixelated or blurry and their file sizes are 300 kb or even less than 200 kb
    How are they doing this?!

    Delete all unused, invisible layers.
    Sometimes zip compression is better than jpg compression (in the pdf output settings). Zip is lossless, and works better with non gradient colour or no images.
    Flattening the image before you save it to pdf can reduce the file size if you are using jpg compression.
    Post a preview of your pdf and we can comment further on how to reduce the file size.

  • How can I reduce the file size when PDF Optimizer does not do much?

    I have a PDF form that exists of 48 pages. 44 pages are forms / have form fields, the other 4 are just informative. Each form-page has approx. 80 fields (checkboxes, text fields).
    When I started setting up the PDF form the file size was 12 MB and I had placed fields on 21 pages. Then with 34 pages the file size was 19 MB. And with 40 pages it was 35 MB big! Finally with 44 pages the file size is 34 MB.
    So I searched with Google and found some tips. Using the "PDF Optimizer" option inside Acrobat for example. So I did, and the file was reduced only with 3 MB... 31 MB was the file. Also used the option "Save as.... Optimized".... no difference. I also found a suggestion about removing embedded fonts. Using the "Audit Space Usage" option I noticed the fonts taking many MegaBytes:
    * Content Streams: 5.287.000     15,09 %
    * Fonts:                24.556.810     70,08 %  !!
    * Acrobat forms:      3.349.164    12,05 %
    In the older PDF version (I saved and kept this one too) with just 21 pages with form-fields, the  "Audit Space Usage" shows:
    * Content Streams: 5.292.000     40,14 %
    * Fonts:                 1.290.224     9,79 %
    * Acrobat forms:      1.588.758    12,05 %
    So I could save many many MegaBytes by -UnEmbedding- fonts. But if I do this (unembed ALL fonts), the file size stays almost the same!?!?!? Why? What can I do to reduce the file size? I would like it to be 8 MB if possible (32 MB -  24 MB = 8 MB)?
    Thank you for your help!

    If you have authored the form, reduce the number of different fonts for the content and form fields.
    Any font used in a form field will cause that font to be embedded into the PDF.
    If you are going to Optimize the PDF be very careful with forms. Optimization does a lot of removal of items and rearranging of items which can really mess up forms.

  • How can i choose a lower quality print density when printing from firefox on my Mac. I cant move the slider along the scale ( I can when printing from the computer).

    I can't change the print density when printing from Firefox. It is set at standard and although there is a "slider button" to use for choosing less or more density, it can't be moved. I can tick "grayscale". I can choose the density when printing from the computer. I have a Mac

    I also have this problem where I used to be able to shrink a 2 page doc to a single page. Since upgrade to FF4 it no longer works - but you can choose say 60% and it will work. All used to work fine in FF3

  • Exactly where are the files stored when imported off a camera into iPhoto ?

    see subject line,,,, but when i use iphoto's ''iphoto'' to import files off a camera versus the ''image capture'' they do not appear anywhere in the picture folder, this does not make sense,,,image capture seems to dumb the files into the picture folder
    and,,,,,i understand what iPhoto 08 does with the files that are imported into the library from the picture folder but where are iphotos library versions stored?????
    also,,,,,i'm putting time and effort into organizing a ''''library'''' only to have none of those efforts taking effect on the folders and files in the picture folder - this seems odd this is like organizing a 2 sets of books in a library == 1 set you want the public to see and one set you what to keep organized in the basement for future storage and retrival and from duplication
    i need convincing this makes sense and help on a better system

    alba123
    You're confusing iPhoto with an File Manager. The Mac has one of those, it's called the Finder
    When you organise things into albums and slideshows etc in the iPhoto Window there is no corresponding folders of images for each album. That would be a waste of disk space. Instead, each album is a virtual entity: in reality, a list of pics that you want to app to display together. So, no, you're not organising two sets of books, what you're doing is arranging the photos as you want them to be displayed while your assistant (the app) is looking after the files.
    Events, however, are not virtual. Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
    You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
    There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    So, think of it this way. You do your organising in the iPhoto Window. Let the application look after the basement.

  • Large PDF file sizes when exporting from InDesign

    Hi,
    I was wondering if anyone knew why some PDF file sizes are so large when exporting from ID.
    I create black and white user manuals with ID CS3. We post these online, so I try to get the file size down as much as possible.
    There is only one .psd image in each manual. The content does not have any photographs, just Illustrator .eps diagrams and line drawings. I am trying to figure out why some PDF file sizes are so large.
    Also, why the file sizes are so different.
    For example, I have one ID document that is 3MB.
    Exporting it at the smallest file size, the PDF file comes out at 2MB.
    Then I have another ID document that is 10MB.
    Exporting to PDF is 2MB (the same size as the smaller ID document)... this one has many more .eps's in it and a lot more pages.
    Then I have another one that the ID size is 8MB and the PDF is 6MBwhy is this one so much larger than the 10MB ID document?
    Any ideas on why this is happening and/or how I can reduce the file size.
    I've tried adjusting the export compression and other settings but that didn't work.
    I also tried to reduce them after the fact in Acrobat to see what would happen, but it doesn't reduce it all that much.
    Thanks for any help,
    Cathy

    > Though, the sizes of the .eps's are only about 100K to 200K in size and they are linked, not embedded.
    But they're embedded in the PDF.
    > It's just strange though because our marketing department as an 80 page full color catalog that, when exported it is only 5MB. Their ID document uses many very large .tif files. So, I am leaning toward it being an .eps/.ai issue??
    Issue implies there's something wrong, but I think this is just the way
    it's supposed to work.
    Line drawings, while usually fairly compact, cannot be lossy compressed.
    The marketing department, though, may compress their very large TIFF
    files as much as they like (with a corresponding loss of quality). It's
    entirely possible to compress bitmaps to a smaller size than the
    drawings those bitmaps were made from. You could test this yourself.
    Just open a few of your EPS drawings in Photoshop, save as TIFF, place
    in ID, and try various downsampling schemes. If you downsample enough,
    you'll get the size of the PDF below a PDF that uses the same graphics
    as line drawing EPS files. But you may have to downsample them beyond
    recognition...

  • Hitting a specific file size when exporting from Flash CS5

    I need to export three banners to .swf from flash and they all need to be under 61K.  They all use photographs and are 5-7 seconds long each and the dimentions are 300x250 px, 300x600 px & 728x90 px.  Is there any way I can put in the specific file size in the program and make it under 61k?  I tried using the publish settings and lowering the quality and even at 40% quality the file size only went down 20KB from 147 to 127.  If you cannot do that in the program is there any third party programs that can be used to do this?  Thanks for your help!

    What you should do is set the Publish Settings to generate a size report.  That way you will have a detailed listing of what each element of the design contributes to the file weight.  I would guess that the images are going to be the heavy hitters, so you might need to use image software to optimize them as much as possible before importing them into Flash.

  • Huge file size when importing clips

    When importing clips from my Sony Handycam (HDR TG3E) in HD 1920 X 1080 the file sizes get extremely large. A 10 minute clip results in a filesize (.mov) of approx 8 GB. Is this really meant to be? I use iMovie '08 v. 7.1.4.
    Would appreciate any help in adjusting the software or hardware preferences resulting in smaller files.

    for editing HiDEf, it gets automtically converted into some 'intermediate' codec, which has ~40-60GBs/h.
    on export, these files will get 'shrunk' again..

  • How can you write TABs in a file?

    Hello everbody,
    suppose you create a simple textfile "Input.txt" in copying the following two lines:
    ABCD
    123
    The code below works fine in creating (on Windows) an ANSI file "Output.txt". Now
    remove the comment slashes in the while loop, and compile and run the program
    again. The output file this time will be a Unicode file with Devanagari
    characters, as two bytes are interpreted as one char. Can anybody tell me why,
    and how it can be prevented?
    import java.io.*;

          { ausgabe.write(zeichen); // only the low byte is taken from the int.
         ausgabe.write(TAB);
          eingabe.close();
          ausgabe.close();

    Hello Tim,
    thanks for your response. Meanwhile I found out, that in fact things work fine. I "tested" the outputfile in opening it with the Notepad editor. That was not the proper way to do it. Making a file dump, I saw that everything was alright. So if one wants to work on such a file with the editor, one should use the Writer classes.

  • How can I keep my Cap 7 file from sending a 0 score to LMS?

    I have a Captivate 7 file for a training program.  The file includes some question slides for knowledge check/review purposes - however, we don't want the file to send a score (not even a 0 score) to our LMS.  We only want the LMS to reflect whether the user completed the course file or not.  So in each question slide, I set Quiz Properties to show 0 points 0 penalty and de-selected the Report Answers box.  I then set the Publish Settings to these (shots below) to prevent any score from being passed through - however, the file is still passing a 0 score to the LMS.
    So I tried just removing the question slides altogether and replacing them with regular slides that I programmed to mimic question slide functionality, but that didn't work either.  I was told to check all buttons/click boxes to ensure that none of them was producing any type of "report" to LMS, but none of them are set to report anything.  Can anyone spot what I'm doing wrong?  Will very much appreciate any advice anyone can give!  Thanks!
