You could open that contact in messages, and your iPhone should say "iMessage" instead of "Message" in the text field. However, this depends wether the contact has iMessage enabled, but it could also mean the contact is using an iPad or iPod touch.
Make sure that their mobile number is in iMessage, and if the text field says "iMessage", then they are using an iPhone (if they've enabled it).

If you are referring to Activation Lock, the password for the Apple ID signed into the device is required, there is no way around this. If you do not have the information and cannot contact the previous owner, the device is useless.

Having the email address is not necessary. It is just the username for the device. All you need is that Apple ID and password. Now, if you forgotten the password, then you have more work to do. Since that email is no longer active, you would need to send the reset to your rescue email, if you remember that. Or you will need to contact Apple Security for help. Everything that you have checked in your icloud settings will be shared between devices using the same Apple ID. If you don't want icloud to share that information, then simply turn off that process under settings > icloud

As I said in the other thread that you posted in the other forum, your friend clearly has not restored the iPad correctly. I suggest that you undertake another restore and start again.

Welcome to the Apple community.
Given what you've have described, your friend cannot have restored the iPad correctly. You need to decide whether you are willing to delete his contacts manually, or carry out another restore. Personally I think I would go for the restore. -

I figured it out! I copied the VCF files to my Contacts app on my iMac and all my contacts refreshed automatically via the Apple iCloud! Hope this helps some people out there! Good Luck!

I use my iPad to get the address book backed up by iCloud from my iPhone. However, I cannot see the recent new contacts from my iPad. Is there anyway to check the iCloud server to see if my address book backup from my iPhone is still there?
