What is essential Pavanrajesh, is to do the tutorials and read the manuals. This is NOT easy stuff. Some supplemental reading material:

  • How can I learn about my new Mac?

Hi, I just recently purchased my first mac-the 2.0GHZ white macbook with leopard. Have never used Mac before, but have heard about it, and after constant problems with my windows pc, will only be keeping it as a backup machine in future. Problem is, where do I start with this thing. What I most miss is the right click, I can't create folders on desktop or elsewhere and making a stack is beyond comprehension. I went through all 76? pages of the leopard tutorial, but it assumes you have some basic knowledge of the mac system. Is there an online tutorial for the mac virgins that assumes no prior knowledge at all? Any help on this would be appreciated. P.S. I am not computer illiterate, I built my last two computers myself (maybe this is why I have constant problems but I don't think so, I don't have any more issues than every other windows user.) and in my workplace, I am the person they come to whenever anyone has software/hardware problems with the computers.

In addition to the suggestions already offered, you might consider Mac OS X Leopard: The Missing Manual by David Pogue. It hasn't been released yet (due on Dec 15th) but it should be a great resource for new & seasoned Mac users alike if it is anything like the earlier versions for older OS X versions.
I found the Tiger edition to be a great reference both for myself, a seasoned Mac user, & for my wife, something of a technophobe. It even has a section specifically for Windows converts, set up to show Mac equivalents for Windows features, which would be useful for you.
There are cheaper alternatives, but at 900 pages, probably not more comprehensive ones.

  • Network storage drive...where can I learn about these?

I have so many questions, and frankly, the answers I've seen looking (briefly, admittedly) around these threads scare me.  Gee, Wally, what ever happened to Apple as the computer you didn't have to know computer programming to use?
Now, before you all get your panties in a bunch telling me that I'm responsible for knowing how to use my hardware, I know...and I do want to know.
So what I want to know now is how can I learn about the various types of "shares", and what they mean for hooking up a network drive for backup, etc.
I have a WD 1TB drive which I believe uses "SMB", whatever that is.  It's got two folders on it currently, "Public" which I can access, and "WD Backup", which I can't.  I also can't seem to use it as a Time Machine drive, which is what I want to do with it.  And, or course, I can't re-format it, which I'd love to do as my wife hates the folder designations on it, and would like to have one folder called "iMac Backup" on it.
Answers which don't involve Terminal will get extra points, but I've dealt with Terminal before, so take your best shot.  And ask for clarification if you need it.  Thanks.

Unfortunately, networking and file-sharing aren't quite so simple in part because there's decades of history and dozens of companies involved in getting it into the current state. If you want dead-simple, you can get an Apple Time Capsule or AirPort with an external drive and be done with it. However, if you really want the most from network storage, you'll probably want to read up...
WD make a number of drive, some network-attached, some not. We'll assume that you have one of their basic consumer network-attached drives.
"SMB" stands for "Server Message Block" protocol and it was the local area network file-sharing protocol developed for Windows for Workgroups circa 1992 (it was later renamed CIFS - Common Internet File System - by Microsoft in 1996 because of the rising popularity of the Internet, despite the difficulty in getting it to work in anything but a small local network). SMB/CIFS is still widely used today for Microsoft Windows networks, though much of the equipment that serves those files are built on Linux or FreeBSD and not Windows.
Access to shares on an SMB server (such as your hard disk) is controlled through a configuration utility provided with the drive or via a web application built into the device (that you access through your browser). Consult your manual. Generally speaking, however, SMB servers offer different ways of identifying whether or not you can access a share: 1) based on the computer connecting (in which case, everyone is considered the same user), or 2) based on a username/password combo. Generally a server will only operate in one mode. Shared directories can also allow or deny "guest" access (access without a password). All of this should be configurable through the drive utility or web application which you access with your web browser. Generally, an SMB server can only operate in one mode.
It sounds like the Public directory is configured to allow guest access, and I'm guessing that "WD Backup" is a share that's password-protected and intended to be used with Western-Digital's own software of the same name. You should be able to add and create new directories as necessary through the provided utility or the web interface.
You are correct, you cannot use Time Machine with an SMB file-sharing service. Time Machine will require AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) or NFS (Network File System) support. Western-Digital only has 3 network drives that support AFP and Time Machine: My Book Live, MyBook World, and WD ShareSpace. OS X also has some basic requirements about the performance and capabilities of network storage in order to use it with Time Machine, so you really want to look for drives that state up front that you can use Time Machine with them (for example, WD World Edition: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/docs/en/appletimemachine.pdf )
I'm not sure why you can't reformat the drive. This is supported on all WD products (though, if you've moved a bunch of data to it already, perhaps it would be a hassle).
You can do backups of your Mac over SMB, but it's complicated by the fact that SMB is quite old and isn't capable of storing information about the file permissions, ownership, etc. It will be reliable for data files, but not for applications, etc. There's a work-around, of course. You can create a disk image on the SMB share using Disk Utility (make sure you create an HFS+ image) and backup to that. If you go that route, I would suggest either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to perform your backups. They are true backup tools, not versioning tools like Time Machine.

  • How can provide parent-child nodes relation ships?

how can provide parent-child nodes relation ships?

I was under the impression that scenegraph is like a JTree. But in JavaFX only leaf node rendering in scenegraph. This situation was confusing my mind. In JavaFX CustomNode must be extending and return a group for custom leaf. If we want to a create parent-child node hierarchy we are create CustomNode that return a group and this group contain an another group, etc. So there is maybe only a way. If you learning to JavaFX first time. This way don't look familiar.

I just recently purchased a mini iPad for my child. It was set up in the Apple store with my Apple id. I now want to create an Apple id for my child and switch it over, how can I go about that. I already downloaded some of the games from my account.

With a new account, you'll need to rebuy the games.
Each user should have their own icloud account, otherwise they end up getting the same emails, contacts, calendars, notes, reminders, etc. - usually not what you want.  But if all have been sharing the same itunes ID, keep it that way, you can have different IDs for itunes and icloud.
If you already have another icloud account, and want to set it up on a device, then go to Settings>icloud, scroll to bottom of screen and tap Delete Account.  This only disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost on icloud.  Then enter the account ID that you want to use.
To create a new icloud account, go to

  • How can I learn where a missing class resides?

I'm going thru a tutorial that autogenerates a few small Java source files in a small project. They SHOULD compile without error, but don't, apparently because various classes are referenced and are not present on my PC.
How can I learn where they are? How can I get the needed classes, and can I trust the files I find, assuming I find them out on the web somewhere.
The message of the moment (produced by NetBeans 4.1) is:
    "class com.sun.xml.rpc.tools.ant.Wscompile cannot be found"
I plugged that classname into Google, and found someone wonder in a forum where this class is, then reply to his own question saying he found it in jaxrpc-impl.jar
Maybe that's right. Now I have to find this Jar file.
Hopefully there's a better way to find this stuff!
    Any advice appreciated.

    That's how you do it.
In this case, I believe that the jar is part of the JAX_RPC functionality (recently renamed to JAX_WS), and a copy is included with Sun's Application Server - and also other downloadable packages, but I don't know exactly which others.
The class is part of the umbrella J2EE system.

  • I have Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom on my MacBook Pro laptop. I bought an iMac and I'd like to move my installations to the larger display desktop for editing purposes. How can I go about transferring them?

I have Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom on my MacBook Pro laptop. I bought an iMac and I'd like to move my installations to the larger display desktop for editing purposes. How can I go about transferring them?

I have the same question. It seems that Adobe is almost impossible to contact (I ended up here at the forums to ask the same question).
I will never buy another Adobe product again if I can get another program to replace it. If this is customer service then it is NON EXISTENT!
I notice that your question has not been answered and why should you have to get the information from a forum? I know of no other company that makes you do this for simple product information.
NOT HAPPY with this version of arrogant customer service (nor am I happy about renting Photoshop products into the future - it is just a money grab in my opinion). I will be voting with my feet and going elsewhere in future.

If you enjoy learning by reading, here's an excellent book in my opinion:
Switching to the Mac: The Missing Manual, Mountain Lion Edition
The author, David Pogue, is the New York Times technical writer.  He is, in my opinion, an excellent author.  This book is accurate and complete.
I have no financial interest in the author, publisher, or Amazon (the link points there).  But I did use a previous version of this book when I started with Macs and am a satisfied customer.

  • How can I know about the latest updates / versions which when available for all the CC products, without having to install and check it with the Desktoip Creative Cloud Application ?

How can I know about the latest updates / versions which when available for all the CC products, without having to install and check it with the Desktoip Creative Cloud Application ?

Thanks for looking into this Jeff!
I work with an Inventory module software and is responsible for software detection across several computers. Once an updated version comes up, I update our database with latest software details to get it detected if installed on any machines.
    The problem tracking updates with Desktop Creative Cloud Software are;
1)We have to have it installed with the CC applications in-order to get the notification of the latest updates and have to check everyday.
2)Only relates to the latest updates, so in-between we may miss a prior update unknowingly.Hence, the remote machines having those updates may not get  detected with the software version update which would create problem in reporting.
3)For all CC products, there is no base or previous updates available for installation if we miss one.
I went through the Adobe Products Update pages [Product updates] which holds good when it comes to Acrobat and Reader software which I follow to track down any newer updates but this is inconsistent when it comes to CC products like in After Effects CC, Dreamweaver CC etc...
So overall to be very specific, is there any one channel I can follow to get the notifications only for the updates on CC products and then may be I can rely on Desktop Creative Cloud for installation if not available anywhere like in product update pages of Adobe ?

    Subrat
