How can I lock my mac without putting it to sleep or logout?
Hi,
I want to be able to keep my mac running, but when I live my home I rather want it to be locked. But the only choices I have is to logout, put it to sleep or minimum waiting for 3min for the screensaver to start.
I've searched for widgets and through the OS it self and haven't found anything.
Any one who know a little hack that you can do this?
I am not at my Mac right now, so I cannot verify the correct settings, but here goes:
You can do this through the Keychain Access utility. Go into Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access, and then click on "View" on the menu bar (Authenticate as administrator if the screen is grayed out by clicking the padlock in the lower left corner). Click on "Show Status in Menu Bar" and save your settings. Click the padlock again to disable changes. Now a black lock icon should show up in the upper right hand corner on the menu bar. Click it and your choice will be something to the effect of locking the keychain, and locking the screen.
You can also use the fast user switching menu that was mentioned in another reply, but if you do and you just click on "Login Window" in the drop down users menu, and you have your users show up as a list of names with pictures, it is more insecure because it showes exactly who is logged in, and their name is already spelled. This is the same problem with the Keychain method and the screen saver -- the name of the user is already filled in. To prevent would-be thieves from accessing you mac through Fast User Switching, change the login box to display name and password fields instead. This method doesn't allow someone to see the logged in user, but it is inconvenient until you get used to it. Hope this helps.

How can i reboot my mac without lion cd previous owner installed it thru itunes?
how can i reboot my mac without lion cd previous owner installed it thru itunes?
Lion is usually installed through the App Store not through iTunes. There is no Lion CD. If you need to perform activities normally requiring an installer DVD, then you do it as follows:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
This will boot the Recovery HD and present a main menu of options such as Reinstall Lion, Restore a Time Machine backup, and run Disk Utility to repair the hard drive. There are additional options in the Utilities menubar item. -

You are supposed to register it before it is lost. Afterwards it is too late to register it.
The only thing you can do not is report it to the police and change your passwords.

Locking Your Screen Without Putting Machine To Sleep?
Hi, I was wondering, is it possible to lock your screen in Mac OS X 10.4 without putting your machine to sleep? I would like to have running processes continue to run and securing machine at the same time. If this feature doesn't exist, is there an alternative way to accomplish this under Mac OS X 10.4? Well, I must go and thanks in advance.
Happy New Year,
-ConradYes, you can set the Screen Saver to have a password which will let things run in the background, and turn off the Energy Saver.
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Security. Turn on the checkbox "Require password to wake this machine from Sleep or Screen Saver"
Choose the Screen Saver via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Desktop and Screen Saver and change its times there.
Choose Energy Saver (Sleep) via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver to change its times. -
How Can I restore my mac without the original software disks?
Hi I have a preowned macbook pro that i got from a friend. I would like to restore the computer back to its original settings because it is asking me for user passwords when i go to install something and the old owner does not remember the password. I do not have the disks the computer came with. Is there any other option to restoring the computer back to its original settings without the disks? I am still trying to figure out the mac "world" so may not be aware of all settings.
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First, open "System Information" app or "System Profiler", and copy "Model Identifier", and copy it here. I'm not completely sure if you have a MacBook Pro with Retina display.
Instead of reinstalling OS X, first try resetting the user password. To do it, open > About this Mac, and see "Version". If it's 10.7 or 10.8, follow these steps > http://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101 If it's 10.6 or older, you need the DVDs, so call Apple to get replacement DVDs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
After doing that, open System Preferences > Users & Groups, and press the + button to create a new administrator user for you -

Stream 7 Can't Turn off screen without putting tablet into sleep mode
Is there a way to switch the screen off without the tablet going into sleep mode?
So that I can play music in the background?Hey @Crixxtachi ,
Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're experiencing issues playing background music while the screen is off.
The tablet will work just like a laptop or desktop and we need to look at some Windows settings for this.
The simplest solution is to access your power management settings, and set the display to go to sleep but not the computer, or at least increase the time before the PC actually enters sleep mode.
I havn't had a chance to test a Windows tablet yet but I would assume that in the power management settings you should see something on the left hand side that says "Change what pressing the power buttons do." In here you may be able to set it to turn off the display.
Let me know if that helps.
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!
Please click "Accept as Solution" if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

How do i control my mac without mouse, trackpad, ect?
magic mouse won't work. trackpad worked like crap, so i broke it.
cintiq works ok, but not with touch.
how can i control the mac without a mouse or trackpad? is ther a wired method to make the ipad control the mac?You can do it manually, but it is much simpler if you use a tool such as Back To My Mac, LogMeIn, or something like that. Those programs enable you to connect to your computer through your router without you having to adjust the router settings manually.

When I put a burned cd from one Mac into another Mac, song titles do not show up! I have to enter them manually! My CD player reads the titles that i on the cd; how can I get my Mac to do so?
The problem is that I burned these CD's myself from music that I added from my personal collection to iTunes. The INFO is ON the CD's (it appears perfectly when I put the CD in my Numark mixer...so I know the info is on the CD), but for some reason, my MAC PRO will NOT read the info on the burned CD when I place the CD into the MAC PRO. The CD was burned on a MAC that I no longer own. But there HAS to be a way to transfer songs from a burned CD with the INFO that is on the CD burned with iTunes.
PLEASE HELP!

i bought some ringtones on my iPhone, later on i sync my iphone to my old computer now i have a new mac pro desktop and i only have 2 ringtones on my phone but not the rest of them how can i get them back without having to pay for them again?
If you bought them on your iPad then you will need to connect your iPad to your computer's iTunes and do File > Devices > Transfer Purchases to copy them over to the Tones part of your computer's iTunes library and you can then sync them to your iPhone - ringtones are a one-time only download, so you won't be able to redownload them directly on your phone.

How can I lock, put in lost mode or wipe memory on my stolen iPad if it is the only apple product I own?
I have already tried this and it doesn't work. It only says no devices. Suppose this means that whoever stole it have already wiped the memory so they can use or sell it. Although I would think the serial number should be connected to the hardware permanently somehow. Don't know how you do that on an iPad that requires a pass code to login to.
