How can I make a page transparent in InDesign CS4?

Hello and thank you all for your help in advance!
I would like to make a page transparent in InDesign.
When the magazine is printed it will be an overlay page with font printed on it where you can still see the image underneath. I was wondering if this is possible.
I'm not quite sure if it has a technical name to it or not so I uploaded a picture of what I'm speaking about to Tinypic.
http://i46.tinypic.com/29m1vk3.jpg
(routes and lines on top on the semi-transparent page, map on next)
Thanks for your help!
Nora

will these subjects actually be printed on separate pages or do you want to overlay some images on one page with type on the same page?
If the former, add and use layers; if the latter design one page and save it as a pdf. Place that pdf on a lower level layer, lock the layer, and work on a higher layer.

how can I make lined pages in Pages

Well I just spent some time searching for that and found one round-about way:
Open a document and choose Table in the toolbar.
    Open Inspector and choose Table.
The default on mine was 3 rows and 3 columns - I changed that to fill up the page with horizontal lines and chose 1 column in the page width.
That resulted in this (partial screenshot):
That may not be what you wanted, but it's the only thing I found.
FWIW, why do you need lines in a word processing app?

I have finished making some newspaper styled pages, however they are too big (due to poor calculations). How can I make  my pages  smaller, or to be the size I want?
    Thanks!

As DOD and Peter have suggested, Layout Adjustment is probably the way to go. You will have to do some manual adjustments, but this tool can help save you some time.
If you are using CS5 or earlier this explains the process:
For CS6 you can use the Liquid Layout menu to do this:

  • How can I make my pages wider?

Any idea on how I can set my default pages to be wider? The template in iWeb just seems too small. When i open the page I have a ton of filler space on the sides. I can't seem to figure out how to make the pages wider so I can put more space between the columns and not have such a massive blank space on the sides of every page. If there is a way, is there a way to make it a default? A way to set all my existing pages to be wider?

Part of creating webpages is finding alternatives or solution for problems that pop up.
There are iWeb templates that aren't easily changed. So you have to find a solution if you still want to use such templates.
    It's not a problem, it's a challenge.
    It's all about creativity.

  • How can I make my page have animations when I click on the link?

I am doing a class report and I need to come up with something to teach my class in one of our software programs. I am in the middle of Dreamweaver and Access so of course I chose Dreamweaver. I would like to know for my own page as well as to teach my class on how to make my page animated when I click the links.
In power point you can set animations to your slides. I would like to know how to do almost that same thing but on a website.

CSS Transitions, Transforms and Animations can do all kinds of fun stuff in modern browsers (everything but IE8 and lower, IE9 can do "some" of it)...

    Animations and Keyframes

DWCC has a transitions tool, I've never used it, but it's available under Window > CSS Transitions

  • How can I make a window transparent but keep its objects opaque in Cocoa-Applescript?

How can I do this in Cocoa-Applescript, Xcode? As well, is it possible to blur the area behind where the transparent window is?

You can set the window transparency with something like:
    theWindow's setBackgroundColor:(current application's NSColor's clearColor)
    theWindow's setOpaque:false
I haven't seen a way using public APIs to blur behind the window, but I'm not sure about using ASObjC with stuff like Core Image, anyway.
You might also try something like setting the background to a gray color and play with the grayscale and alpha values (colorWithCalibratedWhite:0.0 alpha:0.2, for example).

If you inspect the preferences for the Clipboard in InDesign you could toggle between formatted text or non-formatted text when pasting from different applications. Don't know, if that will make a difference in your case.

  • How do you make the smallest pdf from InDesign CS4 but retain some sharpness?

I have a 2 page brochure, front and back with layered photoshop files and when I make the small pdf I need to make a 100kb file like a client has done in the past. The smallest I can make the pdf file is 460kb.  It will not go smaller no matter what I do. Of course I can enter final resolution as 72 dpi but the photos become very fuzzy. I have even reduced the file sizes of the photos and replaced them in the document. The file size remains the same.  My client said that Illustrator reduced the size for him smaller in the past but I don't think that is the solution.  How do you retain some sharpness in a pdf but keep the file size at a very minimum?

But InDesign CS4 outputs the file no matter what at 460 kb for me.
Still don't know why they got 100 kb.
By not using InDesign. Scott is on the right track by mentioning Distiller - which makes PDFs that are smaller than what InDesign can export. Illustrator can be used (improperly*) in the same way. Both methods can strip out stuff that you don't need if you don't care about printing quality, don't care about reliable display across multiple platforms, don't care about precisely how your fonts are embedded, don't care about the lawsuit that the blind people using screenreaders are going to bring against you, and so on. I don't know which of the above is not in your client's 100k file, or which of the things in my above list will be stripped out by using Distiller or Illustrator, but I bet that one of the people who has already posted in your thread does know, and might be talked into telling us.
But, if you're trying to make your client happy and aren't actually personally invested in making the smallest PDFs known to man, and if you're located in the US, then perhaps the phrases "screenreaders... blind... accessibilty... lawsuit" spoken together might induce your client to rethink this arbitrary desire for miniscule file size of PDFs.
Alternately, you could just save postscript out of both PDFs and just look at the .ps files in your favorite raw-text viewer.

  • How can I make a movable transparent main window (HTML, not FLEX)?

    Hi all-
I'm new to AIR and coming up to speed quickly. I got a sample application up and running right away and was able to give it a transparent main window so that the corners are rounded and there is no window title bar.
However, I can't figure out how to make it so the user can drag the application around their desktop when they click on it.
I've seen a few FLEX examples of this but I have to work in HTML.
Does anyone know how to set this up in HTML?
    Thanks,
    Nicholas

"Works pretty much as I'd expect, except clicking and dragging one of the child controls in my window (e.g. a button) moves the whole window as well."
Most user interface events (mouse up, down, etc.) "bubble" up from child elements to their parents. Since you are listening on the body element, your handler is called for every mouse down in the page since the body is the highest parent in the document.
    You can either:
Attach the event listener directly to the element used to drag the window.
Check the event target property to check whether the target of the event (the element moused) is a drag control.

  • How can I make a indicator transparent grey?

    Hi,
I would like to make the background of a string indicator transparent grey on the FP. No Problem making it either transparent or grey, but I don't know how to make it transparent and grey at the same time.
    Would anyone know?
    Labview 8.5. & XP
    Thanks a lot,
    Marc

I'm not sure I follow you.
If you make a control or indicator transparent, that means there is no color.  Whatever is behind goes through.
If you make it grey, then it is grey.  It is not transparent.  You can't have both at once..
Now, do you want to see something underneath the control or indicator and see it as grey?
If so, then make the control / indicator transparent and color whatever is in the background grey..
Or maybe I totally didn't understand what you want to do..
Can you post an example code of what you want to do?

  • How can I make some pages in a PDF display in single-page view and others in two-page (facing) view?

Exactly as it says on the tin. I am looking to save a PDF magazine/book layout in such a way so that when opened, only the front and back covers open to the viewer in single-page mode, and the rest of the pages in two-page facing mode, without re-printing the in-between pages in booklet format  and re-inserting them into a new PDF (with the front and back covers left separate and untouched, and included as single portrait-orientation pages). This is so that individual pages can still be printed (on a physical printer, not a "virtual" one like a PDF driver), as-is without having the page next to it included, or the printouts always requiring landscape orientation (resulting with two "pages" from the PDF showing up on one sheet of paper).
So when the PDF is opened, I want just the front and back cover to be auto-viewed by themselves, and the content (the "meat" of the document) viewed side-by-side, as though one were actually reading a "book" -- but without actually re-doing the content pages to be "fused" side-by-side. Thus creating the "illusion" that they are, in fact, in booklet form. Is this possible, to have different page-display settings for different pages/page ranges in a single PDF? If so, how is this done? If not, what would be my best course of action otherwise to achieve this "virtual" book layout, while still retaining the "physical" structure of the document and allowing individual pages to be printed by themselves rather than "fused" together?
Using Acrobat X Pro on Windows 7 Pro SP1.

The best you can do practicably is the 'two up with cover page' view mode. The first page will appear singly but not centered, and to get the last page to behave it would have to be a folio sheet.
It's theoretically possible to use JavaScript to reset the view mode as each page is changed, but it makes for a nightmare of usability (what if someone on a smaller display wants to use 'fit to width'? Not an option if JS keeps overruling it). Anything involving JS won't work on non-Adobe software or mobile devices.
Not a programmer by any means, so I won't be using JavaScript because I wouldn't know where to begin. I was thinking more in terms of an option I could adjust in the menus or dialogues.

  • How can I make my page see my bean?

I have a JSP page called confirm.jsp, which calls the JavaBean Fruit.class with <jsp:useBean id="orderedFruit" class="Fruit" />. However, this doesnt work, and the tomcat server throws me the following exception: org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP. And this in its turn causes the following exceptions for the confirm.jsp page: Class org.apache.jsp.Fruit not found
When I add the page directive: <%@ page import="Fruit" %> to the confirm.jsp page, all works fine. What am I missing? Or did the author of my book forget to mention that this page directive has to be added. Can anyone help me out here, cause Im lost. What is the difference anyway between the page directive and the jsp:useBean
Im using the tomcat 4 server. Do I need to create a web.xml by any change? Cause Ive heard people talk about it, but I dont really understand the purpose of this xml file, and how to create it.
    Thanks,
    Joost

%> to the confirm.jsp page, all works fine. What am I
missing? Or did the author of my book forget to
mention that this page directive has to be added. CanThe page directive to import the class is needed, otherwise your JSP page (which gets compiled into a Java class) will not know what the heck is Fruit. The useBean bit of code just helps you instantiate a Fruit object from within a JSP page.
Im using the tomcat 4 server. Do I need to create a
web.xml by any change? Cause Ive heard people talk
about it, but I dont really understand the purpose of
this xml file, and how to create it.You don't absolutely need it. It needs to be placed in the webapprootdir/WEB-INF directory. So let's say you call your web application FruitMarket. So chances are you have a FruitMarket directory under the webapps directory in Tomcat (doesn't have to be, but if you place it elsewhere you need to make a change to the tomcat-home/conf/server.xml config file). Under that FruitMarket directory, you need to have a WEB-INF directory, in which you will place the web.xml. The web.xml file is a configuration file for your web application. You can store parameters in there, servlet mappings, etc. You can read more about it on the java.sun.com site.
    Hope that helps.

  • How can I make a picture transparent in Keynote

So I'm helping my kid with a school project with a simple Keynote presentation.  I know how to make the whitespace around a shape in Powerpoint blend in with the background, but I can't figure out how to do the same in Keynote.  It's a simple small square pic that he wants to use for a Wild West presentation.  I've read where people have done some import/export of images into photoshop, but that's not an option for us.  I've exported the imaga and saved as a .png and re-imported it, but still no-go.  Can anyone help?  It's a Mac, and shouldn't be this difficult.  We've got Keynote '09.  Yes...'09 on a MacPro running 10.6.8.

Click the Alpha button in the tool bar and drag on the white in the image with the mouse until the background is removed.
