At one time I hid a folder on my desk top. To pull the folder up, I had to launch Finder and hit "Command+Shift+G" to get to the folder. It's a free download for the standard product which luckily worked for me. After downloading PrintWindow, and putting it in my Applications and reading PDF instructions, I opened PrintWindow and clicked "File". Then I chose "Print Folder Listing", clicked that and see "Print Listing" of all my Mac's folders. Then, I selected the folder for which I wanted the file names listed on paper. Then it opens a Print Options menu. I clicked Print. Then, a "Page Setup" menu appears. I clicked "OK". Then a "Print" menu appears. On the "Print" menu, there is a PDF options menu!! On that, there is a "Save as PDF"!! I clicked "Save as PDF" and then there is a small "Save" menu where I typed a new file name and the folder in which I wanted the listing saved. It worked! Thank you.

Click on the Hot Corners.. button and look at the four definitions. In the picture below, if you moved the cursor to the right top of the screen, it would slide all the applications off the screen as you describe and show the desktop. Set it to "-" to deactivate.

This issue can be caused by an old bitmap version of the Helvetica or Geneva font or (bitmap) fonts that Firefox can't display in that size.
Firefox can't display some old bitmap fonts in a larger size and displays gibberish instead.
You can test that by zooming out (View > Zoom > Zoom Out, Ctrl -) to make the text smaller.
Uninstall (remove) all variants of that not working font to make Firefox use another font or see if you can find a True type version that doesn't show the problem.
There have also been fonts with a Chinese name reported that identify themselves as Helvetica, so check that as well.
Use this test to see if the Helvetica font is causing it (Copy & Paste the code in the location bar and press Enter):

You should reset the network.http prefs that show user set on the about:config page.
