How can I mount a Raid set (partition in an external drive)?

Hi,
I have 3 partitions in my external drive. I tried to create a concatenated Raid from 2 of the partitions. However, I end up with an offline Raid Slice (one of the partitions is under this slice) which is grayed out in Disk Utility.
When I try to delete the Raid Set, I get "Deleting RAID set failed. This RAID configuration is not valid" warning. When I try to erase the RAID volume, I get "Volume Erase failed with the error:The chosen size is not valid for the chosen filesystem." warning. I cannot mount the volume either.
So, I have 2 of the 3 partitions mounted. The 3rd partition (which is under RAID) is unmounted. Do you have any suggestions to have access to the 3rd partition?
Thanks.

Why are you trying to RAID two partitions on the same drive? Aside from the fact that it doesn't work it also makes no sense when you can simply create a larger partition by joining the two into one.

Easy way, CLONE IT to another HD
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.

    BAD IDEA
You want one backup (ie Time machine) and one (or more) data archive of just all your raw files (drag and drop, or cloned etc.)

Hi Niel.  Can you be move specific for those of us not tech savy?   1 - Can you provide steps to back up the library?  2 - How do you organize the library?  3 - When you move the entire iTunes folder, does it include iTunes paid for music along with downloaded music from CDs?  Thanks

That is the only logical conclusion. There is an easy solution. On the Mac app store download a free app called smartconverter. It is free. You just drag and drop file into app and it will convert to any file u want. I hope that foxes your issue

It's confirmed, H.e.l.l. has finally frozen over!  TM drives are now bootable!
Still it's not a real bootable clone, can't run the computer off the external drive for long in only Recovery mode, still requires the boot drive to be replaced if it not functional, and with TM backing up every hour, isn't going to offer much software protection as the TM drive is just as likely to be as messed up as the internal boot drive.
For a iMac it still requires the computer to be taken in to Apple for a drive replacement, as ONLY Apple can do it due to proprietary connections and firmware on the iMac hard drives.
    But it is bootable!
The backup time factor can be controlled using TimeMachine Editor, from every hour to just when the user thinks it's necessary.
    Apple lurches slightly forward!  Hurray!
Question is, can one restore from earlier stable TM's or just the last one? In this bootable fashion?

  • How can I get my Boot Camp partition off my old drive?

I swapped out the stock 160gb drive that came in my MacBook Pro since it was acting up. I installed a new drive and restored it with Time Machine, but now my Boot Camp partition is still on my old drive. I slipped my old drive into a usb sata enclosure and tried booting from it in hope I could back it up with Winclone. When I went into the startup disk selector the drive would not show up (but it sounded like it was trying to spin up). Earlier when I pulled the drive out of my MacBook Pro it was still functioning fine, so I do not think the drive has failed.
Any ideas on how I can get the Boot Camp partition off the old drive? Thanks for your help.
    -Ryan

Some drives require more current to spin-up from a "cold start" than most USB ports put out, even if the port supplies. Additionally, if the drive is failing, it may require even more power for the startup.
I have a couple USB enclosures with external AC power that I keep around in case I run into drives like this. Failing that, I also have a couple of USB cables which use 2 ports to provide additional current. Also the cable length, and gauge makes a difference.

  • How can I transfer a back up file to an external drive?

I need to create space in my computer. But, I need to transfer a back up of my image to an external that is not my time capsule. How can I do this?

Assuming there is nothing else of importance on the 'external' drive, you can just plug it in then in Time Machine preferences panel select 'Add or remove back up disk...'

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.

  • How can I restore my library that was erased off external drive....

I just accidently erased 90% of my itunes library that was reading off an external drive. The last 10% was recently purchases music that I downloaded directly to my laptop hard drive and remains intact (makes sense?). Basically I wiped out the external drive that my 90% library read to.
I was able uncover hidden files off my ipod and inturn copy my library back to the external drive but the big question is - is there a way to restore all this without having to start over Itunes? Can I reimport it off the external drive from the ipod copyover? One thing I can't do is copy it back onto the laptop hard drive because there's nowhere near enough space. Thanks for you help!

OK first thing you might want to do is read this post of mine from the other day...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6296361&#6296361
because, well I am too lazy to type much of it again.
But the part that really is for you is about half way down, just above the link where it starts with "If it was me, " which is what you want to do. In your case, you would use the "Add to library..." command twice. Once to add all the files from the external, and then again to grab all the ones off the internal, if you want everything located in one location. You can then remove the ones from your internal AFTER you verify that they made it to the external ok.
As noted in that post at the end, but worth repeating, doing it with that method keeps everything all together (database files, media files, etc) in a single folder for your library rather than your database files on the internal and your media on the external or spread across both drives. If you ever need to move the library or want to use your library on other computers, you can simply move the folder or the entire drive and use the above instructions to open your library.

  • How can I import images from my camera to my external drive instead of Mac, but still use IPhoto?

I would like to preserve space on my new Mac and import photos from my camera to my external drive instead of my Mac, while still being able to use Iphoto. Not sure how to specify this.

Move your Library to the Extnernal Disk -
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Then import as normal.

  • How can I repair a RAID 0 on mac pro hard drives?

I recently RAID 0 my drives 2-4 in my mac pro.  These were each 2TB Constellation Seagate drives. It worked fine for about 15 minutes and then as I was copying some files from this 6TB RAID -- it just disappeared.
It shows up in the disk utility but won't let me repair the RAID.  When I do repair each of the drives -- slices, they show no problems.  My OS is 10.6.8.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

how well did the act of loading data to the array go? how about building the array?
You're using RAID Utility or command raidutil
The problem likely - new and latest firmware? isn't the drives possibly (can't know for now) but with the controller and in this case I assume you are using Apple Pro RAID. How long have you had the controller? any history with it?

  • How can i eject a bad cd from macbook air external drive?

I have a Macbook Air and an external superdrive. On the mac keyboard doesn't have an eject button.. how to eject a bad cd?
    Thanks in advance!

On the late 2010, there is an eject button. You might have a newer model. Either way:
    (1) Minimize any open programs you have up and running.
    (2) Drag the SuperDrive icon to the trashcan and it will eject
    (3) If the icon isn't on the desktop, find it by opening finder and right-click select eject or drag it to the trashcan

  • How can I copy files from my Mac to my external HD?

I just bought a MacBook Air. Now I want to copy some files from my Mac to my external HD. And I cannot do it. Maybe the problem is on the authorization. How can I fix it?

what format is your external drive in?  if it's on a NTFS format - it become read only.
format/erase your external drive to exFAT if you share this drive with a Windows PC.
If you're not sharing this drive with a PC - then format it to Mac OS extended journaled.
use disk utility to do this.
before you format your drive - make sure whatever files you have in it are backed up.

You will have to clean the HDD.
You can use diskpart to delete all existing partitions and partition table,  See info @

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc766465(v=WS.10).aspx
Or you can use a 3rd party utility downloaded from the internet or the HDD manufacturer to clean the HDD.
