How can I open files created in ClarisWorks 2 or 3?

Hi
Although I can still run AppleWorks 6 (in Snow Leopard) I am trying to 'future proof' my AW documents (WP, SS, DR, PT) by opening them and then saving them either as RTF, PDF, Excel, Word, or JPEG files.
Unfortunately, I can only open pre-1996 WP documents in TextEdit (all formatting gone) and cannot open pre-1996 SS documents at all. Is there any application that will open documents created in ClarisWorks 2 or 3? I've tried AW itself, and LibreOffice, to no avail. (I do still have the CW2 app but as I have an Intel Mac and no way of running Classic, that's no good to me).

Hello,
to convert ClarisWorks files with AppleWorks, it is better to use AppleWorks 6.2.4 (or maybe 6.2.7), see AppleWorks for the modern day, a migration tip ; i.e. unfortunately AppleWorks 6.2.9 fails to open/convert many ClarisWorks files :-~
Concerning LibreOffice, you must avoid LibreOffice 4.3.0 ( which has a problem with many filters on OSX ): as you have some spreadsheet files, the best is probably to try LibreOffice 4.3.1 RC1 which must be able to open most of these files. If this fails, you can try to download mwawOSX in http://sourceforge.net/projects/libmwaw/files ( also free), i.e. I have corrected a file detection's problem in the new version of libmwaw, so it may work better than LibreOffice ( which includes an older version of libmwaw )....
Notes:
- another solution may be to emulate a Mac Classic ( using for instance miniVMac http://minivmac.sourceforge.net : free if you still have some Mac Roms :-~ ) and then to run your version of ClarisWorks.
- if you find some files that mwawOSX fails to convert and that are not confidential, I may be interested to see them...

Imagine iWeb as a database which upon your command creates html files. It's a one-way process. You can generate more html files later but iWeb cannot open them. It only works with the "database" (the domain file).

  • How can I open files from Appleworks and Pages 4.3 in Mavericks?

I have documents I created in Appleworks and Pages 4.3 that I can't open in Pages 5.1 using Mavericks.  How can I open those files?

Mavericks is the Operating System (OSX).
LibreOffice [free] may be able to open your AppleWorks files but probably not perfectly.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them.

  • How can I open files in folders on iCloud Drive on my iOS8 device?

Have created folders and moved parts of my documents and pdf files to iCloud Drive on my MAC (Yosemite).
I can see the folders on my iOS device in Manage my iCloud, I can delete the folders and documents but HOW can I open the documents?
On Apples homepage I can see a simliar layout as when I log in to iCloud.com with my folders etc. plus the Apple Pages folders.
But where on my iPad / iPhone do I navigate to find the same?
Tried to login to iCloud.com on Safari on my iPad but it did not show my folders/files on iCloud Drive.

So what is the point of upgrading to iCloud Drive when there is no "Drive" on your iOs 8 device? I also added a new folder through Safari on desktop- as instructed by Apple- and I have no way of accessing it on the iPhone! This seems pretty bogus and a huge waste of time!
And... If Apple was developing an app for the "Drive" why have us upgrade to something you have no way of using?
And... I did try opening files through apps that allow it but I do not see anything.
And... Pages docs do NOT show in the "Drive" on Safari.
    WHY?

  • How can I open files in portable disk?

I am so sorry, but I am very new user of Mac OS. I am trying to open files such as media files and other folders, but I can not see anything when I click my portable disk drive on the screen. How can I open these files and see it?

Try right clicking the disk and selecting "Open".
Another approach is to open Finder (the leftmost icon on your dock at the bottom of your screen).  Hopefully you will see your portable disk drive on the left side of the finder display.  Then you would click on that icon, and see all the folders and files on the right.

  • How can I recover files created in the guest account?

I set up a guest account for the kids to use, and my wife then used my Mac to type up a word document (for over 3 hours) and saved it at the end of the evening. The next day she returned, and it had gone! I now read that the "Guest account" deletes all files when the computer is switched off (what idiot decided to make this deletion so immediate and so permanent, I am perplexed, why not at least put them in a temporary folder?).
This document must still be there, surely, just "invisible". Please please, how can I get it back without parting with hundreds of pounds for file recovery document, it is just one file from yesterday!
(I switched from PCs to Mac's when we bought a new Vista laptop at work and couldn't find the "file" and "open" commands on a drop-down menu top-left of screen - the Mac-fans at work promised me that Macs were "so intuitive" and "so much better than a PC". They lied. Macs and PCs are both designed by geeky-types who want more and more complex systems, when all I want is a computer that does what I ask without too much clever stuff (like deleting 3 hours of work because my wife happened to be in the wrong account). I have wasted as long trying to find said file....I'm so depressed.

    Paul -
I'm sorry you've lost files, but when you set up an account as Guest, there's a message that clearly states "When a guest user logs out, all information and files in the guest account's home folder are deleted". If you want an account where files are retained, you should create an Admin or Standard type.
You will need to use data recovery techniques to see if your file can be recovered. The more that you use your computer, the greater the risk that the file will be overwritten. You can contact a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers (which will be expensive, but you can judge the value of the file) or try something like Data Rescue. The latter has a demo which you can install to determine if your file can be recovered, and then, on purchase, you can actually recover the file.
    Good luck!

  • Can't open files created or pasted by network user in my shared folder, why?

When a user creates a file or drops one over network in my shared folder I can't open it without changing permissions first.
After installing 10.7.3 update Windows computer were not able to access my iMac anymore. After solving that issue this one was left for me to fight with.
I we googled hard and tried all permission repair methods listed, nothing helped.
Files created by Windows SMB users have RW permissions only for that user, an No access for Everyone. There are no permissions defined for me or staff group or anybody.
    Thank you for your ideas.

I haven't found a solution to this problem yet. All Windows users now access my Mac with my username, changing permission all the time became annoying. This is not a solution, rather an easy way out.
I Would very much appreciate if someone has a proper solution.

  • Indesing updated to latest version (10.0) but can't open file created yesterday.

Created a file yesterday with Indesign. Wanted to continue work today but Indesign requests to update to 10.0. I updated allready I even created this file with this version with this edition of Indesign but can't open it anyway.
    - Alert shown is: Cannot open "[documentname]" because it was saved with a newer version of Adobe InDesign CC (10.0). You must use that version or later to open the file. To then enable it to be opened in this version, choose Save As InDesign CS4 or later, or export to IDML. -
So to be clear; I created this document in this version of Indesign and it just doesn't open anymore although all possible updates are performed.
Am really in need of some help since it is about two documents and I just lost work like this...
    Kind regards,
    Linda

Aaaaaaahhhhh....FOUND IT!! The trick is to NOT use the alias-thumb in the dock, but to actually start up in the apps-folder where the Adobe Indesign 2014 edition is installed next to the 'old' edition.
Wow. Not sure to feel stupid or to be angry... pffff...
Back to work I say! (The best remedy...)

  • Can't open files created in CS3 with CS4

When I try to open a file that was created in CS3 I get this message:
Cannot open the file "OpenEnrollSample.indd". Adobe InDesign may not suport the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be issing, or the file may be open in another application.
This goes for both the InDesign files and the PDF files created with them. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Thanks for any help.

My Acrobat that is part of CS4 won't open the PDFs created by the CS3 InDesign file.  However, I do have the plugin to open PDFs in InDesign and that doesn't work with these files either.
These are files I created so I know that they are InDesign files.
I am running OS 10.6.8 and using CS4.

  • How can I open files using a default zoom level?

When I open a file in acrobat reader, the letters are too small that I have to zoom out the documents in order to read them. Is it a way to pre-set the zoom level every time I open the files?

    I have the same issue - .
We NEED a way to have OUR default zoom override whatever some author thought was a wonderful zoom level.
The Zoom setting in Page Display and also in Accessibility are not honored in V10.1.7, and from other posts, not in earlier versions either.
And, yes I can provide many documents which apparently have author created zoom levels to prove the point, if needed.

  • [AS] How can I find files created in CS2?

My company has 2000+ documents in a sytem that have been created using both InDn CS2 and CS3.
I need to be able to list all of the files that have not been updated to CS3. I've tried querying a known CS2 file using applescript and the FInder but the result only gives me InDn with no version.
I've asked for: file name, creator type and product version when querying the file, but product version doesn't give any result.
    Result is (*Vue.indd, InDn, *)
Can this be done from the finder or do I have to script InDesign to query the documents? Obviously using InDesign will increase the query time.
Thanks for taking the time to read this.

If you need to figure out version of both Window and Mac files from a Mac, this is how I do it:
    --Parse file type for version
    on parseFileType(myFile)
         set fileVersion to ""
         tell application "Finder"
set thisFileType to file type of myFile
         end tell
         if thisFileType ≠ "" then
              if thisFileType = "IDd3" then
                   set fileVersion to "3"
else if thisFileType = "IDd4" then
                   set fileVersion to "4"
else if thisFileType = "IDd5" then
                   set fileVersion to "5"
else if thisFileType = "IDd6" then
                   set fileVersion to "6"
              else
                   log "Getting version by hand..."
                   --Adobe InDesign 3.0
--Applescript sucks at parsing large files, use grep instead
set grepString to "Adobe InDesign [0-9]"
                   set theCmd to "grep -rao \"" & grepString & "\" \"" & POSIX path of myFile & "\""
                   log theCmd
                   set grepResult to ""
set grepResult to do shell script theCmd
if length of grepResult > 1 then
set fileVersion to (characters -1 thru -1 of grepResult) as string
                   end if
              end if
         end if
         return fileVersion
    end parseFileType

  • How can I open files from a mobile app?

I've got a mobile app developed in 4.6.  Part of our app includes the ability to store files on our remote servers which users can access.  In its simplest form the app displays a list of the files which the user can then click on to open.  I tried throwing a navigateToURL which works - although it's ugly as hell.  It opens the browser which then throws it to the os.  Again, it works, but I know there's got to be a better way.
Files will include PDF, images (jpg, tiff, etc), and Word and Excel docs.
    Any suggestions?  TIA
