How can I open word documents in my mac?

I am trying to open some attachments sent to me which were written in microsoft word for windows 2007 in my mac word 2011 and it opens up a bunch of gibberish. Can someone tell me what I can do to open it correctly?

I have been able to open all Word documents sent to me with Pages.

Update Office to 2008 or 2011 or else use Pages, TextEdit or download one of a multitude of free programs such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

  • How can I open a document created in Classic on MacOS X?  When I tried to open it, it says Classic Not Supported. What do I do?

How can I open a document created in Classic on MacOS X?  When I tried to open it, it says Classic Not Supported. What do I do?

    The short answer is:
Single click on the document you created in Classic, bring up your 'popup' menu (right click or control-click), select 'Open With' and choose the Mac OS X application you believe will open the document.
If this does not work. Tell us which Classic application you created the document with and which applications you have which you believe will open your 'classic' document.

Hi. How can I backup word documents and not have them crowd my screen? I know, you guessed it. I'm a novice, but not ashamed!

Please explain what you mean when you say backup Word documents crowds your screen.
I don't see any connection between backup and your screen.

If you mean "I can't double click a *doc file and make word open" then you highlight the file and do a command-I (or get info).  When the window comes up, change the "open with" parameter.  You can also right click and select "other"

  • How can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone

    Hi,
how can i open my iBook on my Mac, not just on my iPhone?  I ask this questions in hopes that I can eventually find a way to have the iPhone read a non "Enhanced" iBook to me.
I used the Accessibility reader for a brief time but it's very persinickety.  Move the phone a tiny bit and it threw me out from page 70 and back to page 48.  Changing pages when you are in Accessibility is excruciating. Now, I cannot get back there at all.
I downloaded 2 apps that claim they can read to me but the closest I can get in the instructions says I need to open the iBook from my Mac computer with my iPhone connected and then I will be able to open the iBook in the app called "Read text to me".  Only when I go to open the book on my Mac it says "This book can’t be viewed using this computer. You can view this book using iBooks on your iOS device."
Thank god, I only have a brain tumor and am not yet completely blind.
I've been to the Apple store twice, checked out a youtube page with all it's comments and I am still nowhere, over the course of a week.
    Can anybody help me?
    thank you,
    Ellen

    You cannot.
Ibooks are only for iphone/ipod touch/ipad
So, there are no third party readers/emulators in Mac OS X and Windows to read them from iTunes? I don't even own an iOS device. I just redeemed Action Comics' Superman #1 from Starbucks and iTunes.
    This one?
Where the REQUIREMENTS spell out that an iOS device is needed to read it?

  • HT4918 How can I open video documents that are Microsoft applications?

With Lion now installed, I can no longer open many video documents that I formerly opened with Windows Media Player.  What can I do?

It does involve ICloud since I could utilize my 2004 Office software with Snow Leopard.  Since Pages will open word documents and save in word format, I thought is would not miss Office.  But, Quick Time Player will not open the video documents sent to me on a PC.  Does this mean I must purchase a new Office just to be able to open these documents?

  • Can't open word documents in Pages since updating to Yosemite

Since updating my software to Yosemite I cannot open word documents in pages anymore. I can open these word documents in preview to at least look at them, but this is not very helpful.
Also, is anyone else experiencing a serious slow down. My Macbook is choking, and I wonder if there is anything that can be done to improve the speed.
Thanks in advance for any insight/ support you can offer!

Be sure you are saving your Word documents on the PC for a Word version supported by Office 2004 X. The latest version of Office for the PC uses a file format that is no longer compatible with older versions of Office.
PC attachments have icons that do not carry any information that Mac applications use to determine what application opens a document. Drag the document from the email application to the Desktop. Select the icon and press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the section labeled 'Open with' select Word from the drop down menu, then click on the Change All button. This should associate all similar documents to the Word application on the Mac. Word documents on the Mac also use the '.doc' extension. If the transferred file does not have the '.doc' extension then it doesn't hurt to add one.

  • Can't open Word documents from Macmail

I use MS Office since I am in publishing and have never had this problem before. But about 50% of the time, I can't open .docx documents that are sent to me by email. Again, this is only some .docx documents. Any ideas on why this might be happening?
Also, it gives me an error message saying that there is not enough disk space to convert this document, but I have about 175GB available.

Try http://www.neooffice.org/ instead of Microsoft Word.
As for disk space, see my FAQ*:

  • Can't open word documents in mail

I've recently converted to Mac at my home, however i still use a PC at work. I have installed the latest version of office for mac, however when i try to use either mail or entourage i find that i cannot open attached word documents. For my work i constantly send word documents from my office to my home computer, however i cannot seem to open any of these files.
I don't know if this means that i have a problem with the office i have just installed, my mail programs, or my general operating system?
