How can i permanently clear/free-up this space?
Hi! I recently transferred all my movie files to my external hard disk. After the transfer, I simply moved the movie folder to the trash bin and clicked "empty trash". To my surprise, when I checked the storage tab, this is how it appears now.
The yellow portion used to be the space occupied by movie files. How can i permanently clear/free-up this space? TIA

When i plug my phone into sync it it is reading in the lower bar that i have 2.0GB of photos on my phone and when i go under the usage on my phone it is saying the same thing...but under the app there are no photos what so ever!! how do i free up this space to be able to use it?

How can I permanently delete tracking cookies?
I was alarmed to read the series in the series in the Wall Street Journal ( www.wsj.com/wtk ) about flash cookies, trackers, and beacons. I had always set my preferences (in Firefox) to not accept cookies, changing that only when I came to a site that required cookies (like Facebook), but then choosing the option to not accept 3rd-party cookies, changing my preferences after the visit, and deleting cookies.
I installed the add-ons suggested by the WSJ and on this website (Adblock Plus, Better Privacy, Ghostery, PrivacyChoice TrackerWater, and Taco. There is nothing in my Library>Preferences>Macromedia file. I visited the Adobe website and followed their instructions to delete flash cookies. Yet I cannot get rid of the cookies!
I tried this experiment: when not connected to the internet, with cookies turned off, I deleted all cookies, closed Firefox, and lo and behold, 150 cookies (yes, I counted them) had re-created themselves!
How can I get rid of them permanently? Please don't give me any pablum about them being harmless, they help to streamline the ads being shown to me, etc. etc. I don't care about that. This is MY computer and I do not want anyone installing anything on it! It irks me that deleting cookies deletes the useful cookies -- cookies that I would chose to keep -- but keeps all these other ones.
Please, if anyone knows, how can I permanently delete these cookies?Get the Add-on NoScript for Firefox.

In addition, I always empty all cookies after a browsing session or at the end of the day. The worst is I have to log back in to some sites. You can't permanently eliminate the possibility of picking up a tracking cookie, but you can get rid of them if you pick one up. NoScript minimizes the chances of getting one, since you only allow the minimum scripts for a site to function. I suggest you start at the NS site and read about it. There's also a support forum which needs no registration. I won't have a lot of time today to explain much more.
Here what you do to completely eliminate Flash cookies. This works.

I noticed that many dozens of others have expressed the same problem with Thunderbird, but it still continues.
For no apparent reason, sporadically, some emails don't show up in the inbox list of an account, but are actually there. If we're told later that someone sent one, and if we do a search at that time, it does come up!
We rely on this for business, and wouldn't know to search if we are unaware that an email has come in but simply doesn't appear in the list. We have actually lost significant business $ on 3 separate occasions, from clients who have said they emailed us, but we never responded! (That's really bad, and even worse because they also won't use us any more.)
Obviously, we of course would not want to have to check with the webmail host when we have Thunderbird. So...., how can we permanently fix this problem so it never, ever occurs??? We used to use Eudora before switching, and this never happened.
Some blogs say to delete one of the files in the system to re-index the inboxes, but again, that would not be the answer, because we wouldn't know to do that, nor when to do that, since some emails, without a warning or clue, occasionally simply don't show up in the list at all.
Please let us know the permanent and complete fix for this ASAP.

Les PockLers, I have used Thunderbird for the best part of a decade and have only once experienced something similar to what you describe and it was a corrupt database.
So lets just back up a bit.
If you want mail to flow without issue the first bullet to bite is anti virus.
* Scanning of outgoing mail is a total waste of time and an added risk for no return. You anti virus already certifies your machine clean.
* Scanning of incoming mail is of extremely limited value. Thunderbird does not allow scripts in email, so there is no bug that will junmp out and start running even if your mail is not scanned and it contains a virus. The exception to that is attachments. But they are not dangerous either, unless you try and open them. Even then your anti virus should be monitoring the temporary folder on your computer and blocking any attempt to write the infected file, let alone execute the contents.
* Scanning of your mail folder likewise is of limited value, but is more than often the cause of mail indexes not being updated. These days anti virus program appear to scan everything. Every file as it is accessed and opened. Thunderbird often has quite large files to store mail, up to 4Gb is not all that uncommon. Anti virus program take about 2 minuted per Gigabyte to scan files. So it can be the case that the anti virus is scanning while Thunderbird is timing out waiting for access to the appropriate files.
To make things more efficient exclude your Thunderbird mail profile folders from on access scanning by your anti virus program. The folders contain NO executable programs, and a weekly scan along with the rest of your computer with Thunderbird closed should be more than adequate. Perhaps scheduled for1am Friday. Gives Friday to deal with anything found and does not interrupt your use of the device.
A similar exclusion can also be beneficial for other data storage areas (databases especially)
Finally look at what processes run on your computer. there aerew by default about 40 when it is new and over time this grows with almost every security, office or game you install until your computer is so busy running background processes to check if the latest versions of XXXX has been released that it becomes sluggish and performance on most things is degraded (That common nugget of Windows computers getting slower over time is TRUE, but a large part of that is added processes and security software which is actually reducing performance quite extensively.)
BTW right clicking a folder, selecting properties and the repair button rebuilds the index non destructively as deleting the files as you mention also looses tags. -

Installed: Firefox 27. ReminderFox 2.1.4. Windows XP Professional
Since ReminderFox 2.1.4 was installed, I have deselected the 'Status/Add-on Bar Display 'Bow' and text on status bar' numerous times, but the setting never takes effect even after pressing the Apply and OK buttons.
The Add-on Bar, which has always been deselected from the View > Toolbars menu, shows as selected in the menu, and even though I deselect it manually, when I close Firefox and then reopen it, it shows again as selected in the menu.

I have a Mac Pro OS 10.7.5 and have a DVD+R disc with files on it, but it ejects the disk after about 10 seconds--what to do? How can I get the data off this disc? I can see it has been already burned, so files are on there?
Try cleaning the lens and see if that will restore functionality to the DVD drive. Use a DVD lens cleaning disk, if you have a can of compressed air, shoot some into the slot or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) around a business card and insert it gently inside the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar and get a free diagnosis from them.

I have a Macbook pro 10.9.1 that will not communicate with my WD external hard drive. Whenever I connect the drive, this pops up:

I have important photos and videos on here of my family and can't lose them. I tried downloading multiple third party applications like Tuxera and NFTS 3G but they're only trials. How can I permanently set up my mac to read and write without risking to lose all my stuff on the external hard drive. MrTran, if you must use unsupported disk formats on your Mac you must also consider actually paying the developers that made the trial software.
It's probably a good idea to follow the developers removal instructions, reboot & then install one tool at a time.
MacFuse, FuseOSX, NTFS-3G are all likley to confict if you run older versions so you need to be sure you are using the latest version. I can't remeber which one depends on the other, so you will need to read the manuals.
When the disk is readable copy the data to another disk. You could probably do this from a Linux distro or Windows if OS X won't do it.
If you insist on only using the trial versions you will need to reinstall Mac OS, copy data off this disk & reformat it.
Is there any good reason for not using the Mac HFS extended format? -
How can I permanently save my Illustrator CS6 preferences?
Each time I open Illustrator, I have to open preferences and go through changing everything back to the way I like it and it's getting really old. How can I permanently save these settings? Make sure you have the read and write permission on the "Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings" folder with all the enclosed items.

I have this same problem and it occurs with other websites (like ESPN.com) too. Only I don't get the option of disabling automatic page updates on other websites. I disabled and reinstalled Mozilla and it went away for a short while. About two weeks later the same problem popped back up.

I like to clean things out on a regular basis but when I run the Norton Clean-up utility all of my custom toolbar and navigation button settings get reset to 'factory' condition. How can I permanently save these changes to my config or preference settings?
Cookies, Completed Forms, .tmp files are all that's set to be cleared. If I can identify the appropriate elements I can protect them from deletion. Does anyone know?

I cannt synk them to iTunes because lots of songs are not in iTunes now. This will delete my lots of songs.

How can I permanently delete them???I called Apple and spoke with a customer service representative regarding this issue. I was given the two things to try, and if they don't work, I was told I can call back in:
1. Go to iCloud.com and look at the advanced options. Since Photos can be deleted here, the representative thought there may be an option to remove songs here as well.
2. Go into the library that has the songs that were deleted and click Update iTunes match.
I tried #1--this didn't resolve the issue, as there is no option to remove songs this way. I can't try #2 right now since I'm at work, but if anybody else with this issue can try that step it can help us get the ball rolling on it. After I try that, I'll call Apple back to discuss this further.
