How can I play blu ray movies on my 2011 iMac?

Will an external USB Blu Ray drive play them natively on 10.6.8 or will I need additional software? DVD's just aren't cutting it on such a large high quality screen.

Find an external blu-ray player for OS X. Apple has yet to support Blu-Ray in any way, shape, or form

  • How can I play blu-ray? - software advice

    Hi,
I've just got hold of a pioneer blu-ray player for my PC. I've got an Nvidia 7900 GT/GTO and an old-ish bug Compaq 21" CRT.
I say a posting on the Ubantu about Feisty Fawn ??https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/BluRayAndHDDVD
I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this on Arch and can give me some details?
    cheers

You'll also need HDCP-compliant hardware, so an oldish box won't cut it . The whole 'chain' of devices needs to be 'trusted' if you really want to play off the disc itself instead of ripping it.
Blu-Ray opticals > motherboard > HDCP-compliant output (I think that's the most important but not sure). Plus, you need a lot of processing power. Blu-Ray uses a h.264 codec, that can get quite beefy.
I sort of covered that already FWIW, Vista did play a BluRay as well as HD-DVD but it failed at playing the whole movie. More testing to be done. *IF* Vista is the only answer for BluRay then I'll be waiting until I can get a decent deck under $200 before buying any more BluRay discs.
GeForce 7000 & 8000 series sometimes have HDCP compliant DVI ports which can be adapted to HDMI as well. You just lose the audio stream. Certain Intel video chipsets also have the support. Don't personally know which ATI cards support it as I've always used Nvidia for my linux boxes except my new MythTV frontend which uses the board mentioned above.

  • Can you play blu ray on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro and I am wondering if I can play Blu ray movies on my MacBook?

    Of course you can...
I bought this off of amazon.com... Samsung SE-506BB. Took me a while to understand the difference between AB and BB, found that BB is the latest version with a few bugs resolved.
Get Macgo from http://www.macblurayplayer.com... Download the trail version... I have been playing Blurays using this...
    enjoy
    Thanks & Regards
    Techno.
Forgot to add... Unlike OWC, Samsung doesnt need an external power supply... Good for carrying around...

  • HP desktop computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs. Who is responsible for this?

In 2010, I blought an HP Pavilion Elite HPE 250-f desktop computer (running Windows 7). This computer was advertised as having a Blu-ray DVD player, as well as players for regular DVDs and CDs. All these years, I've been successfully playing regular DVDs and CDs. Until now, I have not attempted to play a Blu-ray DVD.
I recently rented the "Divergent" Blu-ray DVD (as well as the "Divergent" regular DVD) from my local library. When I tried to play the Blu-ray DVD, the HP MediaSmart software and the Windows Media Player detected the Blu-ray but were not able to play the Blu-ray.
I then downloaded the Media Player Codec Pack, http://download.cnet.com/Media-Player-Codec-Pack/3000-13632_4-10749065.html    This Codec Pack was supposed to help Windows Media Player play the Blu-ray. That did not work. When I got rid of the Codec Pack using System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player became unable to detect the Blu-ray in the Blu-ray drive. After another System Restore, HP MediaSmart and Windows Media Player were once again able to detect the Blu-ray (but were still unable to play the Blu-ray).
I then downloaded Cyberlink PowerDVD 14, which played the Blu-ray for only about 7 seconds before crashing. I then got rid of Cyberlink PowerDVD 14 with a System Restore.
I downloaded TotalMedia Theatre version 6.0.1.123. However, this software did not detect the Blu-ray. I then got rid of TotalMedia Theatre with a System Restore. After that, I was not able to play ANYTHING, including CDs and regular DVDs. CDs and regular DVDs were not being detected by playing software. After another System Restore, I was once again able to play CDs and regular DVDs. However, I do not want to risk trying to play the Blu-ray again.
So, what's going on here? HP advertised this computer as having a Blu-ray DVD player. Wasn't HP responsible for providing software that could play Blu-ray DVDs? And why is the Blu-ray DVD, sometimes detected, and sometimes not detected, by playing software? Is there some kind of hardware issue?
Who is responsible for the fact that my computer can not play Blu-ray DVDs? HP, for bad playing software and/or bad hardware? Or is there something in the Windows 7 operating system that prevents the playing of Blu-ray DVDs? Is Microsoft responsible?
    Thanks for any information.

You're not going to get any help from HP or Microsoft on a 4 year old computer.   Maybe your optical drive is no longer able to play Bluray discs.  Windows 7 Media Center with Bluray playback was not included in all versions of Windows 7.  Each computer with Bluray has an individual license; yours may have expired after not using it for 4 years.  Best advice - don't flog a dead horse.  Just get regular DVDs.

  • Can I play blu-ray discs on a PowerMac G5?

If I install an internal Blu-Ray/dvd optical drive on my PowerMac G5, can I play blu ray discs without hacking the code.

    As Klaus1 said,
No I would not recomend you try to watch Blu Ray films on a G5 as the combo of Video and CPU hardware even in the fastest G5 does not the 'grunt' to decode and play Blu Ray films, also ALL internal Blu Ray drives are SATA so unless your G5 has SATA hard drive/ DVD controlers on board you need a plug in PCI card.
However if all you want to do is to be able to read/write Blu Ray data discs then as long as you have a SATA connecter free the G5 will be able to handle that - prob will not be able to multi-task at the same time !

  • Can I play Blu Ray on MacBookPro 2.4Ghz intel 2 core Duo

Hi, Just wanted to know if my MacBookPro 2.4Ghz intel 2 core Duo can play Blu Ray DVD

    Yes Matt your correct,
If the original poster wants to play commercial BlueRay DVD movies on the Mac there is NO option far as I know.
The reason for this is the very draconian hardwired copy protection schemes employed with BlueRay that Apple didn't go along with, in fact Steve Jobs called BlueRay "a bag of hurt".
BlueRay data DVD's are a entirely different matter of course. Those are available externally.

  • No sound when playing Blu ray movies

I just recently got Direct TV and now my tv has no sound when playing my Blu ray movies. I have a LCD 32 inch 32C100U1 model tv and a LG Blu ray player. When I look for audio on the TV menu I only see HDMI 1 sound and my Blu ray is hooked up to HDMI 2 input. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can I watch Blu-ray movies on my MacBook Pro 17-inch?

If this is possible at all, I think there are two or three issues to be addressed.
First, I understand that to display Blu-ray movies, the display must be HDCP compliant. All I know is that mine has adequate resolution (1920 x 1200). I called AppleCare and they could not verify HDCP compliance; however, they also did not find any information explicitly stating that it is not. Does anyone know the answer to this, and if it is indeed required?
Second, I need an external Blu-ray drive that will work on a Mac with OS X 10.6.4. Ideally it would not require an external power supply. I've got a laptop, so the more portable the solution, the better.
Third, I'm guessing I'll need new software to play the movies on the disc, rather than the pre-installed software that plays regular DVDs. I would prefer a Mac software solution; however, I do have Windows running under Parallels Desktop 5. I am concerned that if I go with a Windows solution (such as PowerDVD 10 Deluxe) playback could be choppy given the dual demands of Blu-Ray HD and the Windows virtual machine it's running on.
    Any advice? Thanks.

  • Cant play blu ray movies

Cannotplay blu ray movies on my HPE-570f running window 7

    Hi,
As you're probably aware, blu ray optical drives have Two lasers, one for reading CDs and DVDs and the other dedicated to reading blu ray discs.  With this in mind, it's always possible that the blu ray component of the drive has failed.
As a further test, uninstall PowerDVD 12 and MediaSmart DVD ( if it's still installed as both are Cyberlink products ).
    When done, restart the PC.
When windows has reloaded, try installing the free 15 day trial of ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 5 from the following link.
    http://www.arcsoft.com/totalmedia-theatre/
When the installation has completed, restart the PC before trying to play a blu ray disc.
