How can I plump up my 2008 MacBook white?!

Hello clever people. I sold my fancy MacBook Pro to go travelling so have now reverted to my trusty 2008 MacBook White  and have updated to OSX 10.7.5.
I would like to know how I can beef up my performance - I know I can upgrade my memory but I want to do as much as possible so any tips from anyone who has done the same would be great!
Specs are:
2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
150 GB HD
Can I update my RAM and my Hard Drive? How about the processor?
Many thanks!
Tim

You can upgrade Ram (6GB max) and the HDD, not the processor.
Biggest performance will come from fitting an SSD instead of an HDD, plus Ram.
Go to OWC and check your options.

  • How can I connect my early 2008 MacBook Pro to a tv through HDMI?

I was wondering if there is a way to connect my early 2008 MacBook Pro to a tv using an HDMI port. My MacBook Pro has a DVI output. In the past I bought a DVI to VGA adapter and connected it to a TV that had a PC input that took VGA and a 3.5mm audio cable. I was wondering if anybody has found an adapter or cable that takes a DVI and 3.5 mm audio cord and has only an HDMI cord at the other end. I have a new TV that only has HDMI inputs and would like to be able to connect my laptop to it.

Since you have not identified exactly what MBP you have, but mention DVI, I suspect a cable such as this is what you will need.

Understand that 2009 MBPs and earlier do not support audio via DVI or minidisplay port.  You would have to tap the audio output port  with a cable such as this:

I am not endorsing these cable specifically, these are just examples that represent what connections that are required.
    Ciao.

  • How can I tell if my 2008 Macbook is dying?

I have a Macbook that was purchased in August of 2008. I have replaced my battery once. However, now it will say not charging, even if it sometimes does charge. My airport will shut off automatically if my computer sits idle for a few minutes and restarting the MAC is the only way to fix it. Also, I have a set wireless network, yet sometimes it chooses to connect to other networks that aren't mine. The internet runs tortoise slow. We even changed our internet provider and speed hoping that was the issue and it still takes a really long time to load a site. Today I went to turn it on and it wouldn't cut on. I gave it a few minutes and tried again. It sounded like it was powering on, but the screen stayed black for an unusually long time. Eventually, the blue screen came on for a minute or two, then went back to black, and then blue again, taking almost 5-6 for my home screen to load. There are occasional times when it will freeze, but they aren't too frequent. The biggest issue is the internet speed. It is very fast on all our other apple devices, but an awful experience on the MAC. I have 3 online classes, which I use daily. I check emails and use my itunes for my iphone and backing up purposes. What I am getting at is whether or not these are signs of an aged macbook? All my software updates are up to date and I believe it is running OS X Leopard. I don't think a 5 year old Macbook is worth putting much money into, but I could be wrong. Would it be better to replace or repair? I'm really just lost. I'm not tech savvy. I know I need it to work and work well and quick. I rely on my MAC for all things school related, so it's very important to have it in tip top shape. ADVICE, please?
    Thank you.

    Try resetting the router.
Also, I have a set wireless network, yet sometimes it chooses to connect to other networks that aren't mine
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced. Drag your network to the top of the list. Delete any networks you don't use.
    The internet runs tortoise slow.
    Try this DNS.
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK. Try a browser.
If it's still slow, check your download / upload speed here > Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
If the download speed is less than 10Mbps, contact your ISP for information about upgrades for a high speed broandband connection.
whether or not these are signs of an aged macbook?
Not really. Perhaps just needs maintenace. Check the startup disk for errors.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

  • How can I reflash firmware on 2008 Macbook 4,1?

It looks as though the firmware that was installed after updating my Macbook 4,1 to 10.6.8 fried my Macbook. I can only assume that something went wrong with the update, as the Macbook was working fine up till then.
10.6.8 seemed to install fine. I repaired Permissions both before and after the 10.6.8 update.
After rebooting, Software Update found the firmware update was needed; I didn't look at the info, but I think it was 1.4. I pressed okay and the install started. The firmware seemed to proceed as normal: solid progress bar filling in from left to right.
The MB rebooted and since that time I've had big problems with the Macbook.
Just to note: I don't remember if I repaired Permissions before or after the firmware update, or both.
I note this because after the firmware update, I didn't use the Macbook, so I can't confirm if it was workig properly or not at that point.
I left it then and came back the next day, when I found it in Sleep.
When I woke the Macbook, the desktop was "fuzzy", out of focus.
The Disk Utility windows was open in the background, and IIRC permissions had been repaired successfully.
Oddly, there were segmented progress bars running horizontally across the screen, about the same height on the screen as the progress bar for the firmware update. These bars were about a half-inch in length and a quarter-inch in width, positioned vertically; there were about 10 of them.
They started filling in from left to right.
But before they could fill in entirely, the screen went black.
And since then I've had serious problems with the black screen: the Macbook would seem to boot fine, I'd get the boot chime, the display would light up, the blue screen would come up with the Apple logo, the little cog wheel would start spinning, and this would go on as normal for about 1-2 minutes, until the cog wheel paused, the screen went blue, and seemed about to boot to the desktop. But instead, the screen went black.
I've replicated this whether booting from internal HD, external FW HD or retail DVD. The screen always went black.
But the odd thing is that even though the screen goes black, the boot process continues and completes.
If I leave the MB for a couple minutes after the screen goes black during boot, it seems to go into Sleep, but when I press a key it wakes for about 10 seconds. I can see the desktop, the date and time are correct, I'm connected to my home wifi network. If I move really fast, I can even select something from the top bar menu. But then the screen goes black again and the MB goes to sleep.
The MB works fine with an external monitor, but its internal display is not recognized in the Displays preference pane.
And only lately have I noticed that at boot, or when waking the MB from sleep, the front LED flashes 5 times before the MB wakes. There are no error beeps, only the 5 flashes from the LED.
So that's about it. No idea what happened, but it coincided with the firmware update.
Of interest is the fact that the display is not fried, it just has the aformentioned strange behavior.
Unfortunately I've found that Apple has no firmware that I could download to reflash the logic board (if that's the problem). This is the ONLY Apple computer that does not have said firmware available for download.
    Any ideas?
Any shot at getting an Apple tech to reflash it? I'd try that, even if I had to pay.
Any and all help greatly appreciated.

Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.

How can I download Micosoft Office 2008 for Mac on my new Macbook Air? I have the DVD and product key

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    You have two options:
    1. If you have another Mac or PC, use Remote Disc to install it on your Mac > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5287
    2. Buy an external optical drive and use it to install Microsoft Office.
Both options work correctly. If you are going to use the optical drive once, use Remote Disc, but it will be much slower than using an optical drive connected to the computer

Use your backup drive instead. No backup drive, then get a monitor and connect it to your computer. Or take the whole shebang to the Apple Store for help with the transfer. Or you can remove the drive from the old MBP and put it in an external enclosure.

  • How can i remove MacKeeper from my macbook air?

How can i remove MacKeeper from my macbook air?

Remove "MacKeeper" as follows. First, back up all data.
"MacKeeper" has only one useful feature: it deletes itself.
Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.
IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Applications
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the functional components of the software will be deleted. Reboot.
☞ Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.
☞ Don't empty the Trash. Let MacKeeper delete itself.
☞ Don't try to drag the MacKeeper Dock icon to the Trash.

  • How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver. I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. thanks

How can I play music on my macbook pro (OSX Lion) through a Pioneer receiver? I've connected them with a mini display port to HDMI cable with audio support bought at the Apple Store, but there's no sound coming through. There are 4 HDMI-in ports on the receiver - BD, DVD, DVR/BDR and audio. In my system preferences for sound, the receiver doesn't show up as an output option. Can anyone please advise. (ps, this is my first time posting a question, so I hope I can find your answers!) thanks, JP downunder

For sound, try the audio output port and connecting to the RCA  audio input ports on your Pioneer receiver.  Use something like this:

how can i transfer photos from my macbook to regular USB plugged in it

For a few photos, you can select them in the iPhoto library then drag and drop them to the USB key. This is a copy, so the originals will remain in iPhoto.
To move the whole library, use the procedure described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1229
NOTE: When you post questions concerning just about anything on a Mac, it is essential to include information about the version of Mac OS that you are running. The latest - what you have, is OS 10.9.1.

How can I transfer pictures from my MacBook Pro to my iPad mini please?

If you are on iTunes 11 on your Mac then you may want to re-enable the left-hand sidebar via View > Show Sidebar, which might make it easier to navigate and may instructions may make more sense.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes (if you've enabled the sidebar), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If you haven't enabled the sidebar, then from your library click 'iPad' at the top right of the screen and you should get a series of buttons along the top of the screen, including one for Photos

Pretty much. I don't understand why you need to worry about MobileMe, though. I'd guess the vast majority of us with iDevices don't have MobileMe accounts at all. That's pretty much why it failed.

I want my clients to have a receipt of the services that they have paid for, can anyone HELP ME PLEASE?

Well...I went to the modem (Westell, WireSpeed), found the NAT settings, once again, I'm WAY over my head, I am assuming this is a TCP connection (as opposed to a UDP) and per Lorex my mobile devices will use port 1025.  So I gave it a "global port range" of 1-10 and I indicated that the "base host port" was 80, 1025, & 9000 (ports 1,2,3).  When I selected the 'enable' it asked for a "host devise" my choices are my IPhone, IMac and the IP address for the dvr, so I choose the dvr.  I still cannot connect and canyouseeme still can NOT find these open ports.  This is taking up my whole day! I don't know how people figure this stuff out.
