How can I prevent my iMac from disconnecting from the internet?

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my iMac keeps disconnecting from the internet when I'm away from the computer for a bit. It's not a huge deal but it is pretty annoying to have to wait for the modem to reconnect every time. Why is it doing this, and is there any way to prevent it?
I'm on a 2007 iMac with the most recent versions of Mountain Lion and Safari. My internet connection is via DSL.

HI,
Each version of the OS can reconnect at different rates depending what was running before the computer went to sleep.
If I let my G4/1Ghz Tower go to Sleep it takes a long time to respond in general and by the time I can use it the Network is Connected.
However my 2011 iMac (i5)  is fairly zippy but apps can be "ready" before the Network is confirmed.
I notice particularly if I have Messages and  Browser open.

How can I prevent my new Mac Air from freezing in while using Safari?

    Hi nainmom,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend starting with these steps if your iPod nano is not recognized by your Mac:

When I open a photo with Preview, it opens all the photos I have viewed previously.  How can I prevent that, other than manually clearing the list after each time?

Close the pictures before you quit Preview. Cmd-opt-q will close all windows and quit. cmd-opt-w will close all windows and not quit.
Or, Disable automatically opening files that were left open in General System Preferences

  • When I exit Firefox, it continues running in the background. How can I prevent this and keep it from happening apparently by default?

I know that Firefox continues running in the background because after I exit the program, I use CCleaner and it indicates programs are still running: Firefox. This happens every time I exit Firefox. There seems to be a default mechanism to keep it running. How can I prevent this?

  • How can I prevent a neighbour's network from knocking mine out?

recently my powerbook has begun to pick up on my neighbour's belkin54g network and at the same time i cannot connect to my own network, or rather my own network appears dead.
    how can i remedy this?
could changing the channel used by my airport extreme base station solve it? and if so how do i do it?

You should test out the following channels:
    1, 6, 11 (and auto if you're feeling saucy).
Unfortunately, the automatic channel selection isn't a
good solution. If you start up an AEBS without all your
neighbour's wireless network up, then this automatic
selection mechanism won't be able to choose a right
    channel.
The best way to build a wireless network running
smoothly on the long run is as follows:
    - download iStumbler or MacStumbler on a portable,
    - walk with this portable through all the places
where you want to use your wireless network,
    - do it again for all the period of times were your
neighbours may also use a wireless network (mine do it
    late in the evening),
    - once you have collected all the channels your neighbours
use, select one which will be 3 channels away of all of
them if possible. If not select one channel which will be
as far as possible of all of your neighbours channels,
    - finally configure your AEBS to use this best channel.
For your information, the rule of channels 1, 6 and 11 is
coming from the original 802.11b (also named Wi-Fi). This
rule was correct for electronic equipment which weren't
exactly clean on the border of their defined bandwidth
    (22 MHz).
This rule hasn't to be followed anymore.
    A channel use design based on channels 1, 5, 9, 13 does
work perfectly well with a lot of AEBS in the same building
and a lot of Mac and PC connected.

  • How can i prevent my Cinema Display 23in From disconnecting my external hard drive?

I have a mid 2010 Macbook pro 13'' connected to a 23'' Cinema Display and i have an external harddrive connected to the computer through the display to keep cord and clutter clear and also that way i dont have to hook up more than one USB cable when connecting. Every time the computer goes to sleep the external hard drive gets disconnected improperly without ejecting. This is annoying because if i have a document open that is drawing from the harddrive when it does to sleep i risk loosing the file. Is there any setting i can change or way that i can get around this? maybe i shouldnt let it sleep or the display cant turn off? Any input is greatly appreciated. THANKS!

  • How can I prevent my Camera Archive import from being interrupted by timecode breaks?

I'm trying to create Camera Archives from my old mini-dv tapes. I have a Sony Handycam DCR-TRV22 connected via FireWire. When I start the Camera Archive import process, everything is fine for a while but then the process stops with a message about a break in the timecode preventing the archiving from completing.
Solutions to this problem I've seen online relied on changing import preferences in Final Cut 7. Unfortunately, I only have Final Cut Pro X and I'm not sure how to control this setting.
I don't really care about timecodes, I just want to dump the entire tape to disk so I have a backup of the tape but the timecode break is interrupting the process and making me get involved a lot more often during the import process.
Does anyone know how to force Final Cut Pro X to push through timecode breaks in a Camera Archive import?

To clarify, this problem is not simply making me get involved more, but is preventing the Camera Archive operation from completing.

  • How can you get a imac to boot from install disc(external drive)

It tries for a while then says you have inserted a disc mas osx does not recognize.

    sirmark1:
Thanks for the clarification. It helps to get a better grasp of the situation.
If you have not already done so, try this:
    • With computer shut off insert disk in external optical drive.
    • Start up computer and immediately after chime hold down Option key.
    • If CD shows up select it and click the straight arrow.
However, the version of Mail you get from Jaguar will be the earliest version of Mail, whereas the version of Mail in Panther is 1.3.1. You can download 10.3.9 Combo Update and either install the update, or try to extract Mail from the Combo update using Pacifist
Hope one of those work for you.

  • How can I prevent a iMac to gain acces to the internet but still have acces to my time capsule ?

I have a network of 4 iMac's and they are all connected to a Time Capsule that works as a server. The TC has a internet connection, but I want to restring this only to one iMac. Is there a way to configure the TC or the iMac to be able to connect to the server and acces to the file in it but not to surf the web ?
    Thanks.

you can remove the dns and gateway then the computer will not be able to get outside of the LAN (local area network) outside being the Internet

  • How can I PREVENT imessages and phone records from being deleted? Its good to be able to block things, but I need to know that no content is being deleted either.

Restrictions allow the requirement of pass code to deletion of Apps, but not of actual phone content. That is only half the solution - if someone wants to communicate with another person badly enough, they will find a way to create a different user account, phone number, etc.regardless of whether or not the number/person is blocked. I need to see ALL communication and ensure nothing can be deleted without a pass code.

There is no way to do that. If some one is creating new accounts to communicate with you after you've asked them not to, you have a bigger problem. You may want to talk to your local law enforcement about stalking.

  • How can I prevent my iOS 7 phone from hitting buttons on my face when I'm talking?

I love iOS 7 but I am having one major recurring issue. My hardware is an iPhoen 4S and I have updated to iOS 7.0.2. While making calls my face is regularly hitting the number key, or the speakerphone key, face time, etc...
This is probably less of a support issue and more of a request for a bug fix. The old iOS turned down the sensitivity automatically when a user put the phone to their face, obviously that's not happening here.
    Thanks!

  • How can I prevent a memory flow error from occuring when using 3D contour plots?

After displaying a single contour plot a number of times, LabVIEW crashes and reports a memory overflow error.  I only load a single 2D array, never storing previouls ones. I always index the data for contour plot 0, and don't explicitly store multiple 2D arrays in any buffer, such as appending data to a shift register.  There appears to be some sort of memory leak in LV when using this feature.  Is there a programatic way to flush the stored data in a contour plot prior to displaying the next 2D array of data?

    Hello MicTomReiSr,
Is this in the LabVIEW development environment?  Are you making changes to the code and then running the VI?  Does the plot contain default data? Is the indicator cleared when the program stops?  The Plot Clean Data method may be what you're looking for.
Remember that the development environment maintains an undo history of the changes you've made, and copies both the block diagram and FP contents each time.  If you have a lot of data displayed on the front panel you end up copying it multiple times.  This isn't a problem unless you're actively editing the VI in question.
If you do need to edit and run the VI at the same time (perfectly reasonable, although you might want to consider a 64-bit installation or more RAM if you commonly work with resource-intensive data types like 3D plots) try reducing the Undo history length (Tools>>Options), although be aware that you won't be able to back up as many steps.
    Regards,
    Tom L.
