i goofed somewhere
My time machine exeternal drive is full
So i spent ONE HOUR deletely backups,Only keeping Oct 31,Nov 30 and Today
so i could regain space for new backups
The Time Machine read 111.79GB,45.39GB FREE before i started
and reads the same NOW after i have deleted those backups
i emptied the trash..........679,484 items deleted
Why didnt i regain HD Space on this external drive?
Where can i look?
Its a Toshiba Portable External HD
should i install Toshibas cd rom and re-do everything?

If lots of disk space disappeared rapidly, a likely scenario would be that you're running something like VMware or Parallels, editing iMovie or iDVD files, have a very large Entourage mail DB, or generally are doing something where large (many-MB or GB+) files are being updated throughout the day, and thus big updates are occurring every hour. The documentation describes how to exclude system files, which at least in theory can be easily restored from the installation media, how to exclude certain directories or files which are large and/or frequently updated, etc.

If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.

You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see? Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?

you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

Long short of it.. Mavericks version of TM is a pain.
Sometimes it is easier to completely ignore the TM backup and do the restore manually.

Fire up *Disk Utility*, click the Restore tab, then drag your old and new TM drives into the Source and Destination fields. Click Restore, and a complete copy of your old TM files will be made on the new drive. Go to TM preferences and select the new drive, and it will continue backing up just as it left off.

To use different backup intervals use TimeMachineEditor 2.5.3. I do not think syncing two Time Capsule to one another is feasible or possible. For all things Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ

I have two months of Time Machine backups made using my old Macintosh computer which died and I no longer have. I have now purchased a new computer and am trying to use the Time Machine back ups from the original computer, but it will not recognise them. How can I get my new MacBook Pro to use the Time Machine Backups from my old Computer? I phoned the Apple help line and they said I cannot use them and would have to delete them. This sounds crazy if you can only use the Time Machine back up file with one computer and have to delete it when you buy a new Mac. Surely there must be some way to transfer ownership (not files) from an old to the new Mac?

It seems as though I am not alone with my frustration with the way Time Machine uses the MAC address of a computer to tell one system from another. This means that if you have your Mac repaired with a new logic board, or replace your system with a new one, you can't resume backups where you left off. Reading through the readers who used the fix using Terminal, it appears that the fix does not always work. I contacted Apple again, but they were no help. Surely Apple should come out with a solution as more and more people use Time Machine/Time Capsule.
It is CRAZY that after a change computers or a switch in the computer logic board that you cannot resume your Time Machine back ups.

I have recently bought a reburbished iMac ( installed with Mountain Lion) and successfully transferred the content of my old imac ( snow leopard) using migration assistant. This onlt took an 1.5 hours.
I have noe connected up an external USB drive and started a time machine back up to back up 200GB of content. It has been running for 12 hours and says 4.63 GB of 200 has been done. Now I know that this calculation is not reliable and USB can get choked but how do I know if the process is actually running ok and how long to wait before giving up. The time machine icon is moving around.
Please please any help would be appeciated - I want to get using my new Mac.

How can I get my Time Machine to recognize restored backup?

I had Time Machine backing up to a Maxtor disk for two years. Then the disk stopped working properly and was no longer accessable nor did its icon show up on the screen. With the help of Data Rescue II, I fortunately was able to access the disk and restore my time machine backup files to a newer external disk drive.
But when I try to select the new disk and run time machine, time machine wants to start a whole new backup and won't recognize the old set of backup files. The old backup files appear to be perfectly restored so I don't know why the Time Machine program is not recognizing them. Can anyone help?

They may look normal, but if Time Machine doesn't recognize them, they aren't.
Time Machine backups aren't like what you're used to. See the Hard Links section of How Time Machine works its Magic.
Unless everything was copied exactly, and the hard links re-connected to the files on the new drive, the result is not usuable by Time Machine.
Your best bet is to let Time Machine start fresh on a different, empty drive; keep the recoverd one "on the shelf" for a while. If necessary, you should be able to drag & drop anything you need from it to your internal HD.

I just got through doing a clean install from Mavericks to Yosemite and now I'm trying to attach and recognize the original Time Machine Drive (TMD)
I chose to install as a new computer and did not choose a Time Machine backup option because the original TMD was not attached at the time of installation.
Upon arriving at the desktop and connecting my original TMD, I was able to see it in finder but Time Machine did not automatically accept it.
I am able to see the disk in Time Machine but it doesn't tell me that its got data on it .
HERE'S THE ANXIOUS MOMENT: If I select TMD, which is the original, will it overwrite all that orignal information, or will it continue adding to it?
I've read under different parts of the forum that if you go through this process during the original setup and the Time Machine drive is attached to the computer then you will be prompted to inherit the old Time Machine. Since I didn't have the drive attached, I didn't see that.
Now back to desktop and into the Time Machine utility: This option to inherit doesn't seem to exist or is obvious. The only option after selecting the drive in Time Machine is "Use Disk". If I click this, will it erase my original data or will it ask to inherit the drive? It's not very clear what will happen after I click "Use Disk".

Thanks for the link. I went there but didn't find any information on how to inherit the backup history. The link says "If you’re replacing an old Mac and want the new Mac to use the backups from the old one, click Inherit Backup." At what point in the migration process does it ask "to specify whether you (I) want a new Mac to inherit a backup"? It seems like I got quite a few levels into Migration assistant and the last click that I did not click seemed like it was good to start the process without telling me anything about inheriting anything.
Any suggestions or did I not go far enough?

I just got a 2TB Time Capsule. I want to migrate my time machine backups on an external hard drive to the new Time Capsule. I have about 430Gb of files to back up; I don't want to wait 7-8 days for the backup, unless I have to. I am using OS 10.7.5 (forget which cat that is). I have mounted the TC drive as 10.0.1.1; I tried to drag and drop from old to "data" on TC, but I get the error "The volume is the wrong format for a backup." Any ideas how I can move my old files to the new, and bypass creating a brand new backup file?

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.

If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

How can I get my Time Machine to Quit Failing?

I've got a MacBook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2, and I'm hooked up to two 27" external thunderbolt displays daisy chained together when I'm at work. On one of the monitors I've got a hard drive attached via USB that is my time machine backup. The amazing glory of having to only plug in the one thunderbolt cable plus a power connection is severly dimished by the fact that most of the time when I unplug my thunderbolt monitors my time machine hard drive gets corrupted. Which then I have to wipe the drive, and rebackup my entire hard drive. The issue can't be resolved from repairing the disk in disk utility. All because I didnt eject the drive before unhooking. It's 2014 for christs sake, why is this an issue at all?
I need suggestions on how to get it so that I dont have to eject the drive before unhooking the thunderbolt monitors. This is super frustrating, and I'm at my wits end. I've thought about creating an apple script to automatically eject the drive about the time I usually unhook my laptop from the monitors, but I can't anticipate last minute meetings, or days when I leave early/late. Maybe I need to look at another backup option? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How can I make my Time Machine backup copy-able again?

Because one of my Time Machine hard drives failed catastrophically, I bought a replaceemnt disk and tried to copy the Backups from my second TM hard drive as a starting point for the new drive.
The copy failed: "A075BE7D-541F-4AA8-80D6-E5E42DD9B198"cannot be converted. Please install newer version of iWork.
The 2nd error message was The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8062).
The 3rd error message was: The operation can't be completed because you don't have permisssion to access some of the items.
These last two messages were repeated a few times.
Finally, this error message appeared: The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003).
The copy then terminated.
Some additional points are:
There is only one user on this computer.
My copy of iWork is 4.3, which is the latest on the App store (certainly for Pages).
I am running OS X 10.8.4
I gave up trying to retain the Time Machine history on my new TM drive and used it as a new empty TM backup. So, at this stage I have one old 1TB backup drive with reasonable history and one brand new 3 TB backup. A week later I purchased another 3TB drive. Knowing that I couldn't copy from the old 1TB drive, I tried from the newer 3TB drive. It failed the same way. So the problem is not one of an old corrupted backup; it's new and repeatable.
Using terminal, I searched my TM backup for the file named above (using "sudo ls -aR | grep A075BE7D"). Here's my output:

Some web searching leads me to understand that these files are created under some (or all?) circumstances for Pages documents stored in iCloud. The names of the files above tell me this is part of Mountain Lion's version management system.
My question is: how can I safely get rid of the files above or in some other way make my TM backup copyable? I am also concerned that if I can't copy the backup, I may not be able to use it as a backup or as a way to migrate to a new machine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

That does get damaged on occasion. I haven't seen it in quite a while, so it's pretty rare.
You can delete it from the backups, via the TM interface, but you must be able to show invisible items).
First, open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app. It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this: <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name). It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy, do not type, the following after the prompt:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
and press Return.
You should just see the prompt again.
Then see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12 to delete all the backups of it.

Yes. You will, of course, lose all previous versions, but since the file is corrupted, you may have lost some, most, or all of them already.
When done, run the same command to hide the invisible items, but replace the "1" with a zero.
