How can I randomly deform / wobble a shape?

Hi there, I was wondering if there is an easy way to slightly, randomly deform a shape or vector mask.
I wanna suround objects with circles and have these circles wobble. At some point the circles will transform into another shape and while transforming and reaching the new state, they should keep wobbling.
I hope my explanation is somewhat comprehensible.

There are a number of distort effects that, when tweaked with, could provide a wobbly-looking deformation. I'm not quite sure what you're asking for though.
Now, if it's their position you want to wobble, the wiggle expression is your friend.

How can I create non-rectangular page shapes?

There's probably a simple answer to this, but I can't figure out how to create a document with a custom page shape in CS4 (or in anything, for that matter). I'm not even looking to do anything that odd, just a 5x3 facing-page layout with rounded corners. I know I can draw rounded rectangle guides for the printer to trim, but I'd also like to produce a PDF showing the actual shape. Any nudge in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Pages are that shape there's nothing you can do about it.
The best you could do is perhaps take a sample of the background colour of Acrobat and then use that as a background for the page.
Then you can place a White Frame on top with rounded corners.
Then place your text and graphics it.
It will be very Faux Pas.
To add to the illusion, you can select the background grey frame and conver it to a Button. Under the Button options you can set it to Not Print from PDF.
That means when it's output it will have no grey background.
You might want to add a small stroke to the white frame so that people can see the page edge when printed themselves.

How can I disable the "create custom shape" window?

When I'm using the custom shape tool in CS6, it will often bring up a new window labeled "create custom shape". It's really disruptive and I'd like to know how I can disable it to prevent it from poping up.

OK I can now get the dialog window to pop up with a single click in a document with my mouse or intuos tablet. I had never seen that popup. Under normal conditions with the mouse I use and my old Intuos 2 now replaced with an Intuos 5 with default sensitivity setting I never saw that popup. Now that I know it exists and how to get it I can pop it up. Try changing your Wacom feel perhaps your getting extra single clicks.

How can I randomly assign addition or subtraction in a for loop?

Does anyone have any ideas for how I can randomly assign a for loop to add or subtract random numbers throughout various itterations? My current code generates two random numbers and adds them together for a set number of itterations. I need some random itterations to be subtraction. Thanks in advance!

Add another Random Number generator and compare the result against 0.5. Use a case structure around your addition/subtraction operator.
Seems like you might also want to output which operation actually got picked.

How can I Resize Two or More Shapes At The Same Time?

I've got text over a rectangle over another rectangle. When I change my text, the size of the boxes needs to change and it's a drag ot have to do each one separately and constantly realign. Is there a way I can resize both of them at the same time tokeep the proportions the same?
Or is there a way I can enter #s to resize, so I could just enter the same #s for each shape?

Here's an example of what Wyodor is referring to: text in shapes within another shape.. It goes one step further and adds the first shape+text into another shape but the concept is the same.

How can I fill part of a shape?

The logo I'm working on requires part of some "complex" shape (The 'Celtic knot' shape, wolf head) and I can't figure it out.
When I use the Knife tool (with the shape selected), it doesn't split:
*Note: the line down the middle is just a guideline*
and when I use the Erase tool, the lines become curvy.

Well I'll be... I'd never bumped into that particular use for compound path before. Learn something new every day.

On more complex shapes (see below) I could not get either compound path OR divide objects below to work correctly (probably some bad points, somewhere - this is clip art and I didn't check extensively). But when I used pathfinder, as suggested above by Mylenium, I could get the job done.

How can I select areas inside incomplete shapes?

Hi,
I'm often required to open PDF drawings outputted from AutoCAD and add colour to them. I do this by opening the PDF in Illustrator and drawing colour shapes in a layer underneath the CAD drawing. Illustrator is good at handling all of the lines from the PDF, but shapes are never interpreted as connected shapes, they are always broken shapes made up of lines. I find it's faster to re-draw them in a layer underneath than to try to join the broken shapes.
Ideally it would really speed up my workflow dramatically if Illustrator had an area select feature like Photoshop, for example if I could just click inside the broken shape with the magic wand tool and it would select the area.
Is it possible that this feature exists in Illustrator and I just haven't found it? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Do this:
1. Use the shape tools to draw a few ordinary closed paths, overlapping each other partially. .25 pt. stroke, no fill.
2. Select all the paths. Object>Path>Add Anchor points. Repeat 8 times or so.
3. Select>Object>DirectionHandles.
4. Edit>Cut.
5. Delete.
6. Edit>PasteInFront.
Now you have a what looks like enclosed areas, but is really just a bunch of tiny open paths. You've simulated the kind of thing you frequently get from CAD exports.
7. Select all.
Now record an Action that performs these steps:
1. Apply 1 pt black stroke with round endcaps and joins.
2. Object>Path>OutlineStroke.
3. Apply the Merge Pathfinder.
4. Object>CompoundPath>Release.
Stop recording.
Everything will look like it just acquired a black fill. But now you have a Group of ordinary closed paths with black fills and no strokes. The outermost closed path completely surrounds the others and is offset from them by 1 pt. (thus, serving as the line work). You can now click the fills of the other paths and apply whatever fill colors you want.
The Action can now be applied with one click.
I frequently use a slight elaboration of such an Action when importing DXFs of exploded assembly drawings. I Lasso or marquee-select around the disjointed paths that make up the drawing of an object, and then run the Action with one click. The result is white-filled closed paths, simplified to remove excess anchorPoints, with a heavier weight outline around the outer perimeter. (Helps clarify individual parts in an exploded drawing--not proper thick/thin treatment, but servicable. Also serves for color-coding by the thick outlines if you.)
The exact best steps to include in the Action depends partially on the nature of the kinds of drawings you typically import; but the principle is generally like that outlined above.
All of this (including workarounds with LivePaint) is, of course, ridiculous workaround for Illustrator's ridiculous lacking any kind of intelligent join command.

I have a fixed figure say for example, 175. I want to randomly generate a value against each of the row so that the sum of values would be 175.
So that I would have output like

or I could have something like

a4 120
a5 11
a6 5
The constrain is that the sum of values should be 175 and the values should be generated randomly.
Can I do this with the single query?

How can stop random tabs from opening in safari!

I have a MacBook Pro 15" retina display2.4 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor and 8GB of space. I've been using safari 7.0.5. Almost every time I click on something in safari, a new tab opens. It's usually an advertisement or sign up page for a dating website. It's getting extremely annoying and I want to know how I can stop them from opening. I've already tried blocking pop up windows in preferences and it hasn't done anything. Please help!

You may have installed the "DownLite" trojan, perhaps under a different name. Remove it as follows.
Malware is constantly changing to get around the defenses against it. The instructions in this comment are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Your best bet would be to use crayola or magic marker. If your colorblind, read the labels on the crayons and they will say what the colors are.

If you're trying to decide between using POP and IMAP, we encourage you to use IMAP.
Unlike POP, IMAP offers two-way communication between your web Gmail and your email client. How can I make only the shape active for the mouse events, not the whole box around it?

I want to create mouse over events for different parts of an image (say of a hard disk drive), so when the user places their mouse over the spindle, say, it will change colour.
At the moment I have it working however the event is triggered when ever the mouse is in the bounding box of the spindle image. How can I get it to only be triggered when it is above the non transparent part of the image (or symbol)?

Thanks joris182, but that wont work when there are other objects within the bounding box of the transparent symbol. For example, if I want the sclera to highlight, if I use an invisible shape over it, it will be active even if someone has their mouse over the vitreous body.

How can you combine 2 shapes while preserving individual colors?

I want to be able to apply vector textures [for t-shirts for example] by knocking the texture shape out of the original shape. Now, say I have a logo with several layers, or a bunch of shapes together, and I want to apply ONE texture across the entire thing (as a knockout). What is the best way to go about this.
And as my question asks, how can I combine two objects into one shape without making them one color? Using the pathfinder of course. Aka, while still maintaining individual colors. Thanks!

I don't have a specific project in mind, but I can mock one up. Okay, so in this example I have a "logo" that has text (in outlines), a gradient, and another shape (it's not a stroke) behind everything. And on the side you can see my texture. Normally, using the "minus front" feature, you can knock the texture out of the shape. But that doesn't work for a complicated combination of shapes (even if it's grouped).
Solutions for this?
I should start a whole post about every possible way to apply textures in Illustrator. Because I know a few different ways, but they all seem to have problems....
