For reference I've had iPods since about 2005 and I've been through this many times. My harddrive in my computer recently crashed and I had to replace it. If you have an iPad 1, the max iOS is 5.1.1. For newer iPads, the current iOS is 6.1.3. The Settings>General>Software Update only appears if you have iOS 5.0 or higher currently installed.

I have clip everywhere. It is horrible. I can't even tell what I have. iMovie can't access video not in the "library" which is iPhoto but iPhoto won't accept my earlier video... ie quicktime.mov. Before I begin I am somewhat daunted by the contents of my Pictures folder, which contains, among other items, a number of folders named 2002 to 2006 and folders called Modified, Originals and Data which also contain year-named folders.
I think I can guess the nature of Originals and Modified but is there a quick way of spotting any duplication before bundling folders or files into a custom folder?
And at the end of the exercise, is there a way of preserving the chronological order of folders/photos as currently viewed in the iPhoto browser?

How can I automatically crop a photo based on its content (a black border)?

I scanned hundred of negatives.
The scanner produced .jpg files. Most of the scanned images show the negatives holder to one side as a black border. The black border is thicker or thinner depending on the photo.
Please see pictures attached.
Is there a way to automate the detection of such a border and remove it by cropping the photo? Ideally I would like the processing to only remove the thickness that is required to keep the photo unaltered as much as possible.
I have Photoshop 12 and I know about Actions. I just don't know how to tell the engine to only crop if it is required, and by how much.
This could save me days of manual work. Thankyou.

Thank you miss marple for your Image>Canvas Size... suggestion. I used it to implement a semi automated process.
I programmed a couple of actions:
- one to trim all sides by 7 pixels
- one to trim the top side by 7 pixles
Then I assigned a shortcut key to each action.
Since I have to open each photo individually anyway to remove larger scratches (see my other post), it is easy to hit a couple of keyboard keys to trigger the relevant 'border removal' action.
The main thing is that in 95% of cases I don't have to use the mouse to fix the borders, but I use keyboard keys only. It is a real time saver.

I'm the director of an event that takes place over one week in October. I made a calendar in my iCal that showed all common public events. I exported it and saved the calendar as am ics file, but my friends, who all use windows, who tried it got strange results. Two got only one of the events on Google Calendar. One tried importing it into Outlook, and was told something about changeling from Gregorian to Lunar, so he just backed out.
About a year ago I received a link to just such a calendar and it worked like a charm. So,
1] how can I create a calendar that contains all the week's events and can be imported into other calendars.
2] is there a way I can make it updatebale (this is secondary.)
I have mountain lion, and fwiw, when I imported it into my computer it worked fine, and ended up with a duplicate of the originally exported calendar.

Your response here seems exaclty like the answer that I need. My logic board broke and I had to get a new one. Sent to Apple and all is working again. I didn't have an super recent time machine back up....my last one was 2 months old. I was able to salvage my music from the computer before sending in for repair and when I got it back, I reloaded my music file onto my machine. I use iTunes match so maybe that kept many of my files/playlists etc in order. But my iTunes is asking me to download many songs that are showing in iTunes and are in a folder in iTunes. These are songs I downloaded during that 2 month break between time machine backups. I think a refresh will fix this issue. But when I follow your steps above, I not certain what file to choose. I tried to go to my itunes ---> itunes media ---> music but that doesn't work. Do I need to choose the "iTuens Library.itl" file? I use my playlists for my job so I don't want to just guess here and lose everything. I did do a backup of my playlists so hopefully I'm protected if something happens but just want a bit more guidance on this. Thank you for your help and your time and let me know if you have any questions.

Sorry. /Users is a folder path. It would be similar to C:\Users (if that exists on Windows).
So, in the Finder, select Computer from the Go menu.
You'll see Macintosh HD, double-click that to open it.
In there you'll see several folders. One is Users. That is where all the user Home folders exist. Select the other account's home folder and go to step 3.
If you have any more confusion, please stop and ask. We'll get there.
If you feel more comfortable, you can just log into that other account and move the files into /Users/Shared.
Then, log into the account you wish to use and copy the files from the Shared folder and paste them into your Home folder, wherever they belong, Documents, Music, Pictures, etc. That just takes a little more work. Transferring them into Shared, and then copying into your home sets the permissions on the files so that you won't have a problem accessing them later. The steps I provided just prevent you from having to do the double move, since you are not going to use the old account once you are done.
Quick unix shorthand. If someone gives you a file path that begins with a /, that means the root of the hard drive, ie Macintosh HD (if you haven't renamed it). The path separator in unix is /, not \.
A path that starts with ~/ means your Home folder, the one inside /Users named with your account name.

Do you have access to another Mac with a disk drive? If so you can do it in one of two ways:
1 - on the Mac with the optical drive launch Disk Utility and make a disk image of the iLife 11 disk. Connect the two Macs together and transfer the disk image to your MacBook Air. Mount the disk image and install from it. I have my iLife disks saved that way for quick and easy reinstall when necessary.
2 - connect the two Mac together so you can access the MBA from the Mac with the disk drive. Insert the iLife disk, and install from the second Mac to the MBA.

Yesterday I setup my mom's account for icloud so she could have the find my iphone app on her and my brother's account. They both share the same account, so when I set it up all of my mom's contacts went onto my brothers phone. After I deleted her contacts off of his phone, all of her contacts were gone on her phone. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get her contacts back because when I went onto icloud.com the contacts were also gone. I backed up her phone yesterday on icloud when she had her original contacts, but I'm afraid to erase all the content and settings on her phone and rely on the backup. While I do believe that it's possible for a program to restore your contacts from an iTunes backup, (inapplicable in your iCloud backup situation) I doubt it can actually do it from the phone, once they are removed from the phone anything claiming to be able to recover them seems suspicious to me.

If you are using the ipod as designed then everything is on your computer, so you can resync everything, and you can restore from your backup to get the settings back.
