How can I remove an icon from my desktop that doesn't want to go?

I was unsuccessful in installing a particular program, so I thought I would just "wipe the slate clean" and try again. Unfortunately, the icon on my desktop doesn't want to go. Every time I try to move it into the TRASH, a note on the screen says, "The icon "iScrobbler" cannot be moved to the trash because it is open".
I've turned the computer off and on again, and I've tried the DELETE button, but the icon remains on my desktop. How can I remove it?

There can be many reasons why a file "doesn't want"
something. But you may be able to replace the file if
you can rename it. Follow the steps here:

If that doesn't help, you may need to delete it using
root user privileges. That's a very advanced and
risky method so you should consult with someone who
is experienced with that process. I have done it many
times to delete goofed files that have a mind of
their own.
It didn't work, I'm sorry to say, but thanks for the idea. As to the "root user privileges" method, I wouldn't even consider it. My computer "skills" are definitely not at the level for trying anything that could be described in those terms. Still, there is hope. I found the creator of the program and sent him an e-mail message this morning.
Finally, I'd like to thank you again for your extraordinary performance. Talk about "service above and beyond.." well, that certainly describes you. I somehow feel that if you couldn't...no, no, let's not say that, let's just hope that the program's creator will be able to help. Thanks again for what you have done.
