How can I reset File Sharing?

After spending many hours on the phone with Enterprise Support this weekend I have a lot of the glitches out of Lion Server 10.7.3. However I have a real important feature not working right now. I can't get my Share Points to work. I have created a Group Share and a Network Share with Workgroup Manager that automatically authenticate when a client logs in. These are working perfectly. However Share Points that I created with File Share in Server are not working. When I browse to the directories in Finder on the sever they show they are shared directories, and their permissions are correct but I can't access them on a client machine. I have them shared as part of a workgroup but even when I enable a individual user to share them it doesn't work.
These shares used to work before I reinstalled Lion Sever so I'm thinking I just need to reset File Sever. Is there a a command I can use in Terminal to rest it?
Thanks,
Tony

Ok I found the problem. This is a Mac Mini Server with 2 internal hard drives. Apparently the second Hard Drive did not have any share permissions on it. This is where I located the directories that I was trying to share. Once I changed the permissions of the Drive in Finder then all shares I created in Server began to work correctly.
Maybe this will help somebody else out.

  • How can I reset family sharing and payment info when itunes requires verification information from a lost credit card?

I was attempting to make an App store purchase and the App Store required verification of my computer.  The information the App Sotre - and ITunes require is the expiration date [ mm / yyyy ] and the security code off the back of my registered credit card.  The card is lost - and so is the information.  ITUnes will not allow me to change the payment information without verifying my information by - again - including the information from the back of the missing credit card. So I am stuck.

This is my account info for iTunes & AppStore:

Obviously I was able to change the payment info in iTunes/App Store. What do I have to do to make that carry over to iCloud?

  • Can't migrate files "don't have permission to read" - how can I reset access?

    Hi,
I bought a mac mini, the mid 2010 model, it had Snow Leopard. I also have a PowerPC G5 running Leopard. So I migrated my files to the mac mini. Then a week later the new mac mini came out (last week). So, preparing to swap my new old mini for the new new mini I copied all my files BACK to the PowerPC. Got the new new mac mini, and of course it runs Lion. I tried to migrate my files but Lion and Leopard (not Snow Leopard, and it can't be upgraded because it's a PowerPC keep in mind) don't play well with each other. Fine. So I next tried to straight copy the files over my network. No go because I get this message:
Items can’t be copied to “Desktop” because you don’t have permission to read them.
I'm using the same login and password on both computers. Both are administrator level. The permissions for the systems themselves have been repaired. I've also tried to set the permissions to the files I want to migrate using this terminal command:
sudo chown -R yourusername:staff  (and then dragging the folders I want blessed into the window)
no go... says I don't have permission to do so.
I tried "pushing" the docs from the other old computer to the new. Doesn't work
I'm trying copying to the Public folder now - and while it works for MOST of the documents many are still being left behind with the same permissions problem.
So, here's my question, given I've tried the above: How can you reset an entire folders contents to become absolutely "public"? There must be a way to do this that I'm missing. Again, I already realize I'm copying from different to new computers, but in Lion I can't seem to reset folder permissions to include "all subfolders" or "all files within this folder" (or whatever it used to say).
    Thanks for any suggestions

Thanks for the help Pondini (gave you a "Helpful Answer" 'star' ). A couple of things, so others have it in front of them:
Setup Assistant can only be used at first install - otherwise you have to reinstall to use it.
Second, it's "dumb" that you can't use network between Leopard and Lion. ARGH. - especially since the firewire ports are different on many newer and older macs (and I mean older as in just over 4 years - not that old really). However you can get adapters (that's the next thing to try) that will change the old pin (4 pin I believe) to the newer (9 pin I believe, have to check that one).
The 501 reference I can check, thanks - I recall seeing that long ago in poking around
On the Lion machine it reads
    User ID: 501
    Group ID: staff
On the Leopard  machine I want to copy from TO the Lion machine it reads:
    User ID: 501
    Group ID: 501
So it seems possible (I'm not sure what I'm seeing - educate me please lol) that the Group ID's don't match, where the Lion machine is staff while the Leopard is '501' - does this matter?
    Thanks.

  • On iTunes 11, how can I access home sharing if the music is from a CD? Is there any way I can download these songs if (A) I no longer have the CD, or (B) I do not want to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match?

On iTunes 11, how can I access home sharing if the music is from a CD on a different computer using Home Sharing? Is there any way I can download these songs if (A) I no longer have the CD, or (B) I do not want to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match?

Yes, you can copy songs that you ripped from a CD to your Home Sharing computer.
Turn on Home Sharing first on both computers.  To do that, go to File > Home Sharing > Turn on Home Sharing.  Enter your Apple ID and password.
Now go to your computer that you want to copy the songs to and connect to your Home Share.  You can do that by clicking on the popover button located at the left top corner right below the play control buttons.  Click on it and scroll to the bottom until you see your Home Share and select it.
Go to Music in your Home Share.  Select the songs that you want to copy in your Home Share and click Import at the bottom right corner.

  • How can I share files from Snow Leopard to Lion?

I have an iMac running 10.6.8 with file sharing turned on. (I've tried AFP and SMB).
I am trying to connect to the iMac on my LAN using a Macbook Pro with 10.7.5.
I am immediately prompted to authenticate – so I am confident a connection is being made (I am also able to ping) – but when I enter my user credentials from the iMac, I get the spinner (not the beach ball) basically forever. I've let it go for several minutes and nothing ever happens.
This article seems related, but following the procedure in it did not help:

Has anybody been able to file share from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion?

The firewall is off on both computers.
How can I werify the shared user is enabled on the iMac with the correct authorization and permission? It does not seem like sharing is configured per user. The user is my normal user account which I use when logged into that machine for everything. I am using those credentials when trying to connect from the Macbook Pro. In the past I did this frequently without trouble. I am not sure when the problem started but the only thing that has changed was I got a newer Macbook Pro last year with Lion.
If you grow weary of this, you might just bring the Macbook Pro over to the iMac and use Target Disk Mode to mount that iMac on your Macbook Pro as a desktop disk. Then drag and drop. No a long term solution.
This is not practical for me as I frquently have need to work from another room using the Macbook Pro and with files that typically live on the iMac (and get backed up from that location). I am making due with Dropbox for now, but the reason I have been driven to post here is that I am looking for the long term solution.
Thanks for feedback. Let me know if you have any additional thoughts.

  • How can I hide file names in a photostream?

How can I hide file names in a shared photo stream on icloud.  I don't want people to see how many pictures I take at an event.  Can this be done to pictures already posted?

The Shared Photo Stream uses the filename of the original image file as the title that is shown in the stream.  If you want to hide the original filename, export the image to a folder in the Finder, rename it, then reimport it to share it.  You can rename the files directly when exporting.
Or, if you do not mind to change the names of the originals in Aperture use the command "Metadata > Batch change" and change the title of the image, with the option "Apply to Original file" enabled and "Add metadata from" set to "None".
To rename the photos already shared, delete them from the Shared Album and share them again.

When i double click on Mac HD the view has changed and my user name is no longer listed on the left. How can I reset this?

Do a factory reset .. nothing will be deleted from your backups and you will be able to get access to them again.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.

  • How can I reset my administrator password, without knowing the original administrator password?

    Hi guys,
I use a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. A few months ago I reset my administrator password and have not been able to remember it since. Consequently, I haven’t been able to do any software updates, my computer is running slow and I'm getting a lot of pop-up junk on my screen. I’m the only user on my computer, apart from the Guest User (Sharing only).
How can I reset my administrator password, without knowing the original password?

  • How to optimize Mac file sharing speeds over LAN?

I got a new NetGear R7000, and I find it very fast for LAN transfers wired or wireless between Macs running OS X Mountain Lion or Mavericks. Testing large (multigigabyte) file transfers over AFP, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks 10.9.1 connecting to a 2011 Mac Mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.5, Ethernet speeds can hit 6 GB per min (800 Mbps) real world and wireless 2.06 GB / min (273 Mbps), real world performance.
If I perform a similar test for Snow Leopard on both ends, an early 2011 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 onnecting to a 2010 Mac Mini also running 10.6.8, has Ethernet transfers topping out at about 1.72 Gigabytes per minute for Ethernet (228 Mbps) and 1.07 GB / min (140 Mbps) for Wifi, real world performance.
I am wondering if there is anything I can do to speed up the Snow Leopard AFP networking. (There are some applications that run only in Snow Leopard and I would like to have it network efficiently instead of getting rid of it. The Macbook Pro has a partitioned drive so I can boot between Snow Leopard and Mavericks.)
I know that Apple made some tweaks in file sharing performance in Mountain Lion 10.8.5, and I suspect TCP IP parameters were altered to speed things up dramatically when there were all the complaints about it being slow on Mac Book Airs with 802.11ac. I am curious what Apple did.
I am wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can improve AFP file sharing performance in Snow Leopard. Are there TCP IP parameters, or plist entries, or other hidden settings I can change? Parameters I can tune in sysctl.conf? I am hoping a real network guru can come on here to advise on some advanced techniques I can use to speed up AFP on Snow Leopard. It is the Macs running Snow Leopard that need to be tuned, not the router, as speeds are very fast sharing between Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
Also, for any/all Mac OS versions, are there networking parameters that I can tune to speed up transfers that involve a very large number of very small files? Even recent versions of OS X slow down greatly on this.
    Thanks in advance

Anyone have any ideas? What kind of speed do others see through gigabit Ethernet, with snow leopard or Lion?

  • How do I set  File Sharing  in iTunes to keep files up-to-date?

How do I set  File Sharing  in iTunes to keep files up-to-date?  i tried iTunes File Sharing, but the updates to the files never transferred across the USB during sync.  Tried to use Documents to Go, but the Apple behavior keeps them from syncing via USB, so when I am home and have no wifi/internet there is no way to transfer the files.  The other apps I have looked at also use wifi/internet to get around the problematic Apple behavior, so there is no way to connect via USB that I have found other than the iTunes.  Have not been able to locate any helpful information to configure the File Sharing to hotsync the files between pod and computer.

I am trying to USB sync Word, Excel, and PDF files between the ipod and the PC.
Pretty sure icloud has to have the internet to work, but I can try to see what USB options there are there when time permits.

  • How Can i retain the Shared Variable Values after PC rebooting

    Hi all,
I am facing a paculiar problem with Shared Variables. I have an application in which shared variables are used for data communication.
One of the application requirement is to retain the variable values eventhough PC is rebooted or started after crashing.
As per the my understanding, the variable values will retain eventhough the PC is rebooted. But here i can observe a paculiar problem like some library variables are retaing the values while some others not. I enabled logging for all the variables.
I tried many ways. like logging enabled, logging disabled, changing variable names, changing process names etc... But i am not getting a consistent behaviour.
I hope some you can help me in solving this issue.. "How Can i retain the Shared Variable Values after PC rebooting"
    Thanks and Regards,
    Mir

    Hi Blackperl,
Thanks for the post and I hope your well.
What do you mean by not getting consistent behaviour.. this will all depend on excatly when the crash happens i.e. before the write or after.
Surely a better method would be to log the data to a file during the reboot...
I beleived the value read back
will be the default value for the shared variable's data type.
The LabVIEW DSC 8.0 module adds more functionality to the shared variable, including initial values and alarms.
If you enable an initial value on a shared variable, when the variable
engine comes back on-line it will default to this value. Setting a bad
status alarm for the shared variable is also a good way of handling
this type of event. Additionally, if you are using a LabVIEW Real-Time
target such as Compact RIO or Compact FieldPoint, it is appropriate to
consider hosting the shared variable engine on the real-time target.
These devices have watch-dog capabilities and are typically the
hardware controlling the critical pieces of an application. Most
Windows or PC-based targets do not have these fail-safes.
I guess, if you could explain to me again that would be great. From my point of view, if I have a cRIO and a Windows PC. If the windows PC crashes, the cRIO will still update its shared variables. Then once the PC has started up its own shared variable engine, and the bindings are loaded, it will once again continue to update its copies of the variables.
Please let me know what you think,
    Kind Regards,
    James.
