How can I restore lost contacts?

Most of my contacts suddenly disappeared. They don't appear in iCloud either. Is there a way to restore them?

i just moved from mobile me to icloud and now this morning all my contacts are gone from my phone and icloud. i did sync/backup on itunes before the move. can i still get them from itunes back up and how.

You re-sync them by setting up your iCloud account under Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and turning on the 'contact sync', assuming that's what you were syncing them with before. If you were not syncing them with iCloud (syncing is NOT the same as backing up), then you will have to re-sync them from whatever you were syncing them with.

It was my grandson who lost my videos..supposedly it happened when he was handling and update on my phone. Since then, the videos that my friend messaged to me last summer are gone. I did a backup today that should have included them, but they are still not to be found. And, of course, I really need them and to remake them will cost me a lot of money. There are no "shortcuts" on the iPhone so I'm guessing you mean you've mislaid the Contacts app. By default, it's in the Utilities folder. If it's not there, look in all the other folders and home screens. Once you find it, you can move it anyhere you want by tapping and holding it until it wiggles, that dragging it to your preferred location.
If you want to reset all of your icons back to the default layout, Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. After you do that, it will be once again in the Utilities folder.
Note: You can also access Contacts through the Phone app.

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer or cloud service regularly, most especially before any update/restore/etc
If you have failed to sync your contacts, then they are very likely gone.

Missing contacts:
Here's a test to perform - using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com and go to the Contacts page. If they are gone, then they are gone (must have done something wrong doing an upgrade or whatever).
If they show up, then the problem is that your device is not connecting to the Contacts database on icloud.
On the device, go to Settings>icloud. Be sure icloud is on and using the right ID. If not, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Delete Account - this just disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost. Then log back in using the correct ID. ALSO - be sure the Contacts are turned on (on the same screen).
Note: Contacts are not part of an iCloud backup, since they are part of contacts database on iCloud's servers. So performing a restore will not help.

If I understand your question correctly, you are attempting to merge your contacts from your previous phone's backup into your iCloud account, then go back to using your new phone as normal, with the new merged database of contacts. I have an article that can tell you how to do exactly that:

first i backup all my mobile stuff to the computer with Nokia PC Suite 7.1 then i do firmware update & it´s work propely i have not face any problem with the update except when i restored my backup data into mobile the contacts are gone there is no contact in my list now plz tell me how can i restore them all. thx.

but in backup log file i found this

How do I restore lost contacts from my macbook pro?

We have a MacBook Pro.
It has all contacts in the address book and then they are broken down into groups for myself, my husband and 2 kids. My husband deleted all of my contacts from his iPhone. When I synced it with the MacBook Pro, it asked me if I wanted to delete 50+ contacts. I said yes assuming it would only delete for him......well it deleted all the contacts he wanted removed from his iPhone, from my iPhone and from the MacBook Pro. So the question is; how do I restore those contacts. We have I phone 4s' and recently updated to OSX Version 10.9.4. Any suggestions?
