The restore from backup process is all or nothing, there is no selective restore process.

Very stupid happened. Edited all my contacts through outlook. On their phone removed to immediately burn through recent outlook. Connect your phone to WM (I have Vista, and I can't use ActivSync ), and WM synchronizes contacts so that they aren't only

You can make one or more calendars of one iphone sharable and the other user will be able to have those sharable calanders synced. Unfortunately, you can't do that with contacts. But you could go to the computer account used by you or your husband, perform a backup of the contacts (see the file menu), copy the file to the other account used to sync the other iphone, and restore. It's a manual process that has to be performed periodically, but doable.
The other method is for each of you to use the same iCloud ID and have both iphones synced to be identical. But I don't recommend that otherwise you'll each get the same text messages and who knows what else.

Unfortunately no. The only way the phone backs up is if you make it back up. You either connect to iTunes and backup and sync, or you set it up for a wifi sync to iCloud. But you have to setup iCloud to start with. You have learned a hard lesson on how to make sure you import pictures on a regular basis like you would the digital camera. When things happen to the phone, this is the media that is lost the most (pictures in camera roll). After taking a number of pictures, and especially ones you consider important, you should connect the phone to the computer and import them, so there is a backup copy on the computer.
Contacts are saved in the backup as well, however they are really designed to be synced to a supported application on the computer, or backed up to iCloud or other cloud service. And, the only way to go back in time on the phone is to restore from a backup, but you also have to remember, you would lose everything on the phone that you had done since that backup, so it is a double edged sword.

You re-sync them by setting up your iCloud account under Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars, and turning on the 'contact sync', assuming that's what you were syncing them with before. There are no "shortcuts" on the iPhone so I'm guessing you mean you've mislaid the Contacts app. By default, it's in the Utilities folder. If it's not there, look in all the other folders and home screens. Once you find it, you can move it anyhere you want by tapping and holding it until it wiggles, that dragging it to your preferred location.
If you want to reset all of your icons back to the default layout, Settings>General>Reset>Reset Home Screen Layout. After you do that, it will be once again in the Utilities folder.
Note: You can also access Contacts through the Phone app.

The iphone is designed to be synced to your computer or cloud service regularly, most especially before any update/restore/etc
If you have failed to sync your contacts, then they are very likely gone.
You can try restoring from backup

You cannot get around Activation Lock without the oringinal owner disassociating the iPad from their account.
