Why were books I purchased deleted when I updated IBooks?

If they are in your iTunes library on your computer, sync to restore the books to the iPad.
Connect the iPad to the computer and Launch iTunes
If you auto sync, let the process complete
Select your iPad on the left side
Click on the books tab on the right
Click on the Sync Books heading.
Click on each book in the list to select them
Click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes.
You can download them again in iBooks for free as well - as long as you use the same ID that you used to buy the books. Read this.

The photos could have gone a couple of different places ...but it is unlikely that they are lost forever. It kind of depends how your Backup was done. With many Computer-based iTunes connections, your Computer Photo App will actually open first when you connect your iPhone and the photo transfer will happen between the iPhone and the App. Assuming that isn't what happened in your case, but you did Backup on iTunes, you could reconnect to iTunes and then click on your iPhone button on the Computer screen ...typically the iTunes Summary screen will show up ...but you can tab-through the various iTunes Screens and find the Photo page. You could check your options and see if you have a Manual Sync setting regarding iTunes to iPhoone ...this would mean you have to select the Photos you want to download to the iPhone during the Sync.

Quit Safari completely and reboot the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

iTunes handles most of the chores with iOS, but iPhoto handles photos and Video.
Start iPhoto, plug in the iPad. You will get an import window with various choices, such as "All" and "Selected."
Put them into iPhoto.
If you want to edit them, you can do that in iPhoto or another editor. You can crop and enhance in iPhoto. Originals will be untouched in an "Originals" folder. But remember, iPhoto is a powerful database, so you should not move photos out of its folders.
If you want to have them elsewhere, select the photos and use File => Export
From there you can decide on the size alnd location you want to put them. If you move them by hand, the thumbnails will remain in iPhoto's database, but when you click on them, you will get a grey screen.

Why did you not back it up before performing the update? Did you perform the update on a computer other than the one you normally sync with?
As already stated, if you didn't back it up, the data is now gone.

While in the process of deleting a single block of frames from my source clip (from the entire 43 min. video) iMovie froze, I had to force quit, and then found iMove had trashed the entire 43 min. clip. Try deleting iMovie's preference file. It's located in your User (Home) folder Library/Preferences and, for iMovie '09, is named "com.apple.iMovie8.plist". For iMovie '11 it's named "com.apple.iMovieApp.plist".
Close iMovie then drag this file to the Trash, but don't empty Trash just yet. When next opened, iMovie will create a fresh .plist file with the default settings, which you can change if desired in iMovie>Preferences in iMovie's menu. If everything now works OK you can empty the Trash.
Deleting the preference file will not harm your Events or Projects but may fix odd behaviour by iMovie. The file can become corrupted in some circumstances, such as when iMovie quits unexpectedly or is Force Quit (as in your case).
It's not clear from your post whether you were deleting frames from a Project or an Event. If from a project (and the project is no longer visible), the original 43 minute clip may still be in the Event. In Finder, look in your User folder Movies/iMovie Events. Also, check Movies/iMovie Projects. Hopefully, you will find your clip, and possibly your project. If you've stored media on an external drive, the folders will be at the top level of the drive (not in a User/Movies folder).

The apple icon appeared and when the "restarting" process was over, I lost all my installed apps, the contents of my phonebook were gone, all text meassages saved were also gone. I upgraded to OS5 yesterday and all my contacts including names, email addresses, and phone numbers have been deleted. When I tried to revert to a previous back up, the only one was the one that was done right before I downloaded the new OS. All other previous backups were gone. In addition, I bought 40.00 worth of extra storage space to back up to iCloud and had to start it over several times before it finally worked...25 hours later!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am MAD that the new OS download procedure deleted EVERYTHING in my contacts. The only thing that remains are my favorited phone numbers but none of them are labeled so I have no idea who anyone is except I sort of know where some people were on the list. This is HORRIBLE and so far I've seen hundreds of these exact kinds of posts all over the Net, not just here on the Apple website. I've done everything I could on my own and tried several things that have been suggested by other Apple users here in the forum. Nothing has worked and evidently nothing was saved to my iCloud storage, either. Now I'm having to pay for a 1pm phone call with tech support that I'm sure will cost me a freaking fortune to tell me that I'm screwed-and that'll be 75.00, please.

How can I retrieve my files when my iMac won't boot?

My iMac won't boot up, which may be related to a recent update to Mavericks. I've tried repairing the disk from the DVD startup - it finds invalid volume file counts and says it's repaired them, but the same thing happens when I try to boot, the screen goes dark, the cursor is still visible and movable, but that's it. Foolishly, I didn't make a back-up so I'm now trying to retrieve some files at least. Using disk utility I've been able to copy everything to an external drive but I still can't get access to the files because it won't boot from there either, same old volume errors turn up when I try to repair it. Will I have to buy another mac just to access the files?

Assuming you are running OS X Mavericks (10.9.4), try booting into your Recovery HD by pressing/holding Command+R at startup. When you see the OS X Utilities Menu, plug in a USB external drive with an empty partition. Select Reinstall OS X from the menu and install Mavericks to you external drive. After the install is completed, your system should boot to your external drive to completed Setup. You might be able to use your internal iMac drive and Setup Assistant to bring over you User accounts and Apps to the external.

I just upgraded to to the iOS 5.1.1 and a few hours later all my contacts disappeared. I tried to restore through iTunes but that did not work. - UPDATE as I am writing this. I got through to Apple Customer Service and because I had selected the option to backup to my computer (iMac 10.5.8) it was actually saving all my contacts to my "address book" app. Since I never used that application I didn't even think to look there. I just re-synced my contacts selecting "all contacts" and I was back in business.

I'm not sure I understand what you're asking, but I'll try to answer! You can either connect to iTunes and set up and activate there, or you can also use the setup assistant to set up your iPhone. As far as carrier activation, you'll have to follow the protocol that your carrier uses. Either switch SIM card, or call the number they use to allow device activation. Is that what you were wanting to know?

I'm using a Western Digital Elements 1TB external hard drive to back up my MacBook Pro.
One day, I noticed that one of my fiels were missing, so I went in to the time machine looked for it (roughly the time period when I created it),
but it wasn't there.

Note: the User's Library is hidden by default. It's also hidden in Time Machine. You have to be in the User's Library in order to restore items from Time Machine.
Under Go in the Menu bar hold down the Option key and select Library.
Scroll down to the 'stickiesdatabase'
If you don't see the file, open Stickies and create a new test sticky. This will create the 'stickiesdatabase' file.
Once you see the file, select the file.
Enter Time Machine.
You should enter in your User's Library showing the file.
Go back in time to when your actual file existed with your data.
Select Restore.
