How can I save list of open tabs "on command"?

Would like to save list of open tabs so that I can go back to the same list of open tabs. Bookmarking saves them but does not tell me explicitly which tabs were open at any one time. I sometimes have more than 15 open, something happens and I have to start from scratch - i will miss some that I had open. Thus a "command" to save currently open urls to a file would solve this problem. Thanks

The new firefox 4.0.1 has a new tab feature, but the tab groups do not seem to persist once you shut down, and are not saved as a folder in your bookmarks. What am I missing? When I use the drop-down Windows menu, it only shows the name of the window, not the tabs within each window. And I don't an option for "Activity Window" (like on Safari), or anything else that will show me all open tabs. How can I see them, as flipping through every open window is a pain....

Does anyone have a response? Or know why even the windows listed in my dropdown list isn't even in alphabetical order? Why does FF make managing open windows and tabs so very, very, cumbersome and difficult?? No other browser is this lame when it comes to that.... Is it really so hard to put them in order, or to add an "Activity Window", which would show all windows and tabs that are open?
Also, WHY DON'T the tabs and windows that open up when I hit Restore Previous Session show up in the HISTORY???? If they did, then I could simply delete all the other history, and I would have a list of all the tabs/windows, so when the number becomes too big, I can simply close them out, and at least have access to a means of re-opening them, As of now, I'm stuck either writing them all down, or one by one saving them as bookmarks (which i really don't want to do), , or who knows what, but again, this is a royal pain, that other browsers make far easier....

When I have many tabs open, & I am viewing the 1st one in the row of tabs, how can I make ctrl+T open tab next to it instead of down at the end of all the tabs?

If, for example, I have 50 tabs open, and I happen to be working on the very first tab out of the long row of tabs (tab #1 out of 50 total tabs)....if I suddenly need a new tab next to the one I'm on so that I can do something else related to what I am doing on my current tab's website, pushing ctrl+t opens up the new tab clear down at the very end of the long row of tabs (i.e., the new tab would be tab #51). How can I make the new tab open up right beside the one I'm working on at the moment?

How can I recover my previously opened tabs / restore session?

HI, I've been struggling the last few days to get back all the opened tabs I had in my Firefox window. My deault setting was to resume the Firefox session from where it was when I last exited Firefox. But some weird toolbar got somehow installed in my PC and when I uninstalled it all my browsing history was deleted (from all my browsers, IE, FF and chrome) and my precious Firefox tabs were gone.
These tabs are really priceless, I collected them through some months of research and it would be impossible to redo all my work. Although I managed to find some of these sites in my browing history when I restored all of it via the "restore" function in places.sqlite file properties (in the "previous versions" tab), it's impossible to find the other sites I need by checking every visited site in my browsing history, there are thousands of them and it would be the same as starting all over from scratch.
I know too that it was unbelievably stupid of me to not bookmark these sites before, but please, isn't there any way of retrieving those lost tabs? What irks me the most is the fact that the tabs weren't loaded when I opened Firefox, but only when I clicked on them, which means that I have no clue on which dates to find the tabs, since they were only visited at the time I found them, and never loaded again.
I'd be most grateful to any hint that might solve this problem. Thank you for your attention.
PS: I should mention I've already tried Window's "System Restore" but to no avail; when I open Firefox, after having a previous session restored, it will display the same tabs I left recently (as opposed to my previous tabs, that remain lost). My OS is a win7 64 bit Ultimate

edvardgrieg put me on the right track so thanks. Though my solution was different.
sessionrestore.js is indeed where your tabs are saved, and as you may have found out, if you lose your tabs this information is overwritten in the sessionrestore.js file.
I am using Windows XP and so I did not have the Previous versions option described by edvardgrieg. What I did have was a couple of backups of the sessionrestore.js file. One was called sessionrestore.bak and the other sessionstore.bak-20131112160018 (the long number being the date it was made). So I merely removed sessionrestore.js and renamed my sessionstore.bak-20131112160018 backup to sessionrestore.js. Remember to close your browser before you do this otherwise your newly restored backup will be overwritten and your tabs lost forever, so back up the backup like I did before you do this.
I also had a few months worth of tabs (approx 150). Glad to get them back.

Long hold on the document in mail and it should give you the open in... option, select adobe reader and the file is now saved locally for viewing even while offline.

You need the Domain.sites2 file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in order to be able to manage and publish the site from another computer?
Do you have that file? If you do copy it to the same folder on the other computer and you're ready to go.
If not then you'll have to recreate the site from scratch. Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site. 1
