How can I save my music from iPod to a new computer?

Probably this problem got solved already in the past but I could not find help till now. I still use my iPod 30gb Classic from 2005 but the computer with which I made the syncs is broken and I got myself a new one. I wanted to save the music files from iPod to the new computer with iTunes so that I have another backup if this iPod should get broke in the future. But I could not backup the music files, somehow. Anyone has help? Thanks in advance.

How it was originally designed by Apple is you store your music in iTunes on a Mac or a PC. you back up your computer. you add to your library through the computer. you then sync to ipod classic. it was never intended to move music back the other way unless you purchased the music from iTunes store.
If your compuetr breaks you restore iTunes library from computer backup.
in many cases music is reduced in size and quality to 128kbps on sync so backwards sync would lose library quality.
finally, it avoids people illegally sharing music, or stealing music from lost or stolen ipods.
to backwards sync you will need to either get into the risky business of third party software, or find a PC running Linux and Rhythmbox and ask again. I probably said too much.

Make sure that autosync is disabled in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, set up your account, connect your iPod and right click on it in the device list. Choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought music from iTunes to your new iTunes library.
If you want to use this computer to sync your device, right lick again in the device list and choose "backup"
This will perform a manual backup without the sync process. Set up at least one contact and event on your computer, to be able to merge data after your device got erased during the first sync.
Use the manual backup to restore your data and settings again.

One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump andiPodRobot.
If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

i'm seriously considering buying an iphone. but before i do, i just have a couple of questions:

2. Will there be an iphone with higher memory capacity than 16gb? If so, when will it be out. (If there will be memory sizes of ipod similar to ipod classic, then i think it's better if i wait a little longer considering that there's only little difference in the price).

I don't believe there will be an iPhone with storage capacity equivalent to the iPod Classic anytime soon - at least not within the next month, or even this year or the next.
The iPod Classic has a hard drive. The iPod Touch and iPhone have Flash storage. Flash storage is more expensive than the hard drive equivalent, but the cost for Flash storage is coming down - supply an demand is probably helping this. The iPod Touch has double the storage capacity of the largest iPhone storage capacity since the iPod Touch doesn't include a cell phone - the case has more room for two 16GB Flash drives. More than likely there will be a 32GB iPhone at some point, but I believe it will be a while before we see a 64GB iPhone or larger approaching the storage capacity that is available with an iPod Classic.

When connected to your computer's iTunes you can use File > Transfer Purchases to copy over any music (and other content) that you've bought from Apple. For music that you've copied from your own CDs or bought from other download sites then is it not already on your computer and/or on a backup that you can copy onto your computer ? If not then you will need to find a third-party program to copy them off the phone.

You don't need to buy anything from the spammers that infect these forums. There are plenty of free options.
If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.

Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. My school district installed new computers. The IT told us that our iTunes would not be effected. When I went into iTunes on my new computer, there was nothing there. Obviously I can't plug in my iPod or everything would be erased. They said that there is nothing they can do about this.

You don't specify iPod classic or iPod touch...
You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new windows installation (iOS devices only)
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup (iOS devices only)
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps. (iOS devices only)
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

I have a ipod video that is loaded with all my songs and photos. My computer died and I had to buy a new one( OS = XP Home ).
