How can I set up a back up hard drive on airport extreme

I have an external harddrive that was plugged into my airport extreme. Apple seemed to eliminate my abilty to back up wirelessly in one of the updates. How can I set this up again? Does anyone know a way around this?
Thanks,

Ah, I remember those links now.  I was thinking something along the lines of:
Never consider any computer a data storage device, rather a data creation ,sending, and manipulation device. Anyone who thinks data is safe on any computer, even copied upon multiple partitions is making a mistake.
Never backup your data exclusively upon magnetic hard drives or flash storage, nor consider same since magnetic storage degrades over time even under ideal conditions.
Store important data on multiple servers on multiple continents.
Burn important data onto multiple copies of archival DVDs and store same in cool dark fireproof safes, multiple places.
Don’t burn data onto junk DVD’s purchased from consumer level electronics stores. These are not archival long life DVD’s nor reliable, nor trustworthy. Archival DVD blanks such as Taiyo Yuden, rated for 100+ years are what the pros use, these are made by JVC and are professional grade DVD blanks.
Most people have never heard of archival DVDs, however their cost is only 30% more than junk-level DVD blanks which are only rated for 5-10 years. Also the reject rate on the inferior DVD is around 15%, the cost is almost identical between the WORST DVD blanks and the BEST DVD blanks.
Most importantly know that 2 copies of your data is 1, and 1 is none, and 1000 copies stored in one place or building, is also the same as none due to possible fire.
Always consider and expect your computer’s hard drive to completely crash anytime, at all times, and you should keep a cloned and updated hard drive handy at all times to return to immediate productivity and utterly avoid programs and parameter reinstallation.  Nothing is quicker than taking out a dead HD and tossing in a new updated cloned HD for getting back to 100% in under 20 mins!
Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.)
(something I coined an age ago)
Backing up data to:
Multiple HD in multiple locations
On multiple servers on multiple continents, private and public websites, anonymous data farms. (very easy actually)
Burned onto archival optical and magnetic storage
Have unclassified data possessed by multiple people in multiples places.
When your data becomes both everywhere and nowhere, accessible to all, destructible by none, cannot be collected together or permanently retrieved under any circumstances, you have Decentralized Omnipresent Data (D.O.D.) protection rivaling that of large governments.

  • How can I set up a WD My Cloud with my Airport Extreme - I can't get it to open ports 80 and 443?

For remote internet access to the WD My Cloud Mirror, I have been advised that ports 80 and 443 must be open in order to reach the WDMyCloudMirror.  My Motorola Gateway (Surfboard SB6141) is connected directly to my Airport Extreme (WAN port) which is in turn connected to the WDMyCloudMirror (all by ethernet cables).  I do not have FULL instructions on how to properly manually configure the Airport Extreme to open the ports.  I have tried an earlier posting which provides many of the steps, but not all of the required information is included (how to determinge the IP address to be assigned, etc.).  I did the best I could with the information given, but the test using "YouGetSignal" showed the ports as still closed and attemps to reach the WDMyCloudMirror by the internet failed as well (of course).  The WDMyCloudMirror has enough Apple "stuff" included in it (software, I suspect) that an Apple legal acceptance is required for its set-up, yet Western Digital Tecnical Support is unable (or unwilling?) to help with this aspect of its configuration required to work within the Airport Extreme environment.  I have returned the WD My Cloud Mirror to Amazon as "not able to work", but I have not given up the hope that I can eventually get the ports open so that I can get this cloud device, or one similar, to permit remote internet access.

Port Forwarding.....or Port Mapping....as Apple calls it is a difficult and complex configuration method for most users. Because there are so many variables involved in this type of setup, it is not possible to provide a step by step guide that will work for everyone with all devices.
It is possible that a setup guide exists for the the WD drive and AirPort Extreme, but you will have to go looking for it on the Internet. Even if you find one, it may not be tailored to your specific situation or needs.
Sometimes, you can do everything right....at least according to someone's article or "how to" guide, and things still will not work correctly.
In situations like this, when you really don't know what to do, you need to enlist the aid of an IT pro, who will know what to do based on your particular products and unique circumstances. Sometimes....they won't be able to get things working either due to particular circumstances.
But, before you do this, I would strongly recommend that you use a Static IP address for your Internet connection with your ISP. If you do not have this now, contact them to ask them if they offer this type of connection. Expect to pay more for this type of service, of course.

  • How can I set up a WD My Book with my Airport Extreme

I just got a WD My Book and want to set it up as an external drive for back up using Time Machine.  I have an Airport Extreme and using the USB port hooked it up to the Airport.  With in the Airport Utilities I am able to see the WD My Book when I click on manual and then go over to disks.  Im at a loss now at this point.  How do I finish this off and get Time Machine working?!  I opened up Time Machine and there are no disks that show up for me to select.  I am hoping someone can help me out!!!!!

Are you sure on this? I read the support article, but unless there was a recent upgrade that changed this, I was able to do this for some time using an Airport Extreme
I'm sure it's not supported by Apple. Here is what Apple says:
Time Machine can’t back up to an external disk connected to an AirPort Extreme, or to an iPod, iDisk, or disk formatted for Windows
Now, to clarify......I never said that  you could not do this. I said that it was unsupported.
Most of us who have tried this find that oddly....it does work....for a period, sometimes a few weeks, or even a month or two....before you start to have corruption issues.

  • How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

How can I install ntfs on an external hard drive so that my Samsung Smart TV can see my media files? Or is there a better option?

OS X cannot natively write to a drive formatted as NTFS, nor can it format a drive as NTFS. There are third-party NTFS drivers available on the market.
Just out of curiosity: Even with NTFS, how is your TV going to access the external hard drive? Does the TV have a USB port?

  • How can I erase deleted items from the hard drive?

How can I erase deleted files from the hard drive?  Will my machine run faster?

If you've already deleted the files and emptied the Trash they are already, in effect, erased. At least the disk space they occupied is now available.
To be able to offer help we need more information about which Mac you have, which OS you are running, how much RAM you have installed, how much hard disk space you have available, etc.
Go to the Apple Menu>About this Mac - copy and paste the contents of the report here (deleting the serial number of your machine). Once we have that info, I'm sure someone will have some suggestions.

  • How to deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping

was curious if anyone one knows how to temporally deactivate a shared Hard drive on Airport Extreme - keeps sleeping every 30mins and have to wait 12 second for the drive to spin up and wait for the beach ball to stop spinning. Getting really aggravating.... Thanks

The external harddrive is NTFS format and someone from apple told me that it would have to be reformatted to be seen by the Extreme -- Needless to say with 33% of the hard drive filled, I do NOT want to reformat.
Unfortunately, HDDs attached to the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, cannot be recognized by the AirPort if formatted in NTFS. If you do not wish to reformat this drive, you will either have to use a different drive or connect this drive to a Windows PC for sharing on the network.
The AirPort can only share drives formatted in HFS+ or FAT32.

  • How to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)

how to connect a hard drive on Airport Extreme (second edition)? Does it need a special format? It is now fromat on FAT32, but i don't see it ??

The USB port your Mac is high powered. The port on the AirPort Extreme is not.
So, it tends to be borderline as far as its ability to supply sufficient power to a hard drive...even if the hard drive has its own power supply.
Often, users...including me....need to use a powered USB hub when they attach any drive to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
You might want to give that a try. Double check to make sure that the drive is formatted in FAT32 as well, since Windows NTFS or exFAT will not work with the AirPort Extreme.
Powering down and restarting the entire network.....modem first, then router, etc.....is something that you would always want to do after any change or addition to a network.

  • Can't add hard drive to Airport Extreme

I wanted to add an external hard drive to Airport Extreme and I can't get it to show up in my net work. If I go to the configuration program for Airport Extreme, I can see that the base station has identified that hard drive (a Lacie 750 mb drive). Any suggestions?

I have the exact same problem with one twist I tried adding an 8gb memory stick instead of a spinning hard drive. Airport utility recognizes it but it does not show up on any of the computers.
