How can I set up a Macbook to wake up at a certain time for backing up?

My wife objects strenuously to Time Capsule (wireless) backups so I finally set it to once a day, starting at 7 pm. You would think that would work but NO, runs too long and even next morning to finish. We are backing up only documents, mail, safari, etc. — no Apps.
We also back up online to BackJack once a day.
So I am thinking what may be a solution is to have it run at night, when she is asleep and the only time she is not using it.
But how do I wake it up at the designated time? If we leave the lid up will just start when something is scheduled like Time Machine or Backjack? Or do I need additional software?
Thanks,
Richard

Basically, for my wife's settings, we exclude iTunes, movies, Apps but do back up Mail, Safari, Docs, Prefs. I have watched it and it does indeed run a long time.
Then something is broken. Backups are only useful when done from a known good system. Then, if that system dies, is stolen, etc. you can restore from your backups. You are backing up a known bad system. If and when you need to restore (and you may, considering something is wrong), you may find your backed up data to be garbage. It is worth investigating why those backups are taking so long. You shouldn't have to exclude anything. You shouldn't be able to generate enough hourly changes to cause the backup to be so slow as to interfere with normal operation.
Two things that could be improved are the memory on the Macbook and the available disk space on the Time Capsule. You are low on both. However, I suspect the problem is elsewhere. You might want to review her log files during a backup to see if there are any error messages.
As for using BackJack, she is an artist and has about 40 GB of photos on her drive that if lost, might be the end of our relationship.
Then those files need to be archived, not backed up, to one or more devices. They should probably also be verified. I have seen people dutifully run backups for months, never realizing they were backing up junk and overwriting the previous, valid backups. I discovered that only when called in to do a system restore from backup.
Time Machine too slow, too small a capacity. I ran Mozy for a while but really slow and CPU consuming. BJ is reasonably fast, does incremental backups, does tie up CPU nearly as much.
I think you have jumped to some invalid conclusions based on some other, underlying issue. When your system if functioning properly, Time Machine should make anything else look like a joke. Your system is sickly, and backing that up isn't doing you any favors.
My advice is to shut down all backups, perform an archive backup, and verify that the archived data is valid. This might be an excellent occasion to use a cloning tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner. Then investigate why your backups are so slow. I suggest buying a new hard drive anyway for that 40 GB of critical data. May as well get an additional hard drive for the Time Capsule and some more RAM. Then re-partition that machine and reinstall the OS, perhaps onto yet another new drive. That is probably the quickest, easiest, and cheapest way to get your systems back up to speed and running well for the long term.

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

  • How can I set up my Apple TV if I only have one spot for an HDMI cable.

how do I hook up my apple tv if I only have one spot for an HDMI cable.

How many different devices (DVD player, cable box, etc.) do you have besides the Apple TV to connect to your TV? If you aren't going to use any of these others, you won't need a switcher.
Also, depending on the device & what other kinds of inputs your TV might have, you may be able to hook them up to other inputs besides your only HDMI one. The quality might be lower for them, & you might have to use several cables for sound & video, but that might end up being acceptable if you use your ATV much more often than the others.

  • How do I factory reset my Macbook Pro and then restore using my time machine back up?

    Hey guys,
My Macbook Pro has slowed down & had more and more random crashed recently and a friend suggested doing a factory reset. My Macbook is about 3 1/2 years old now so it's about time I did something and this always used to work for me on PC's.
I've kept a completely up to date time machine back-up since day 1 (I'll do another immediately before the reset.) and would rather use that to restore all my files. Will I have to reinstall all my apps with this? (Thats fine if I do, it would just be nice to know first) How do I do the factory reset & how to I restore from time machine afterwards.
    Many Thanks

First obtain an external hard drive to back up to. Go to your system preferences and look under Time Machine. Select your external hard drive as your backup drive then start a full backup.  Then follow these steps provided by Apple:
In the menu bar, choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command and R keys.
Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
Select your startup disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.Important:   Erasing the disk removes all the information from the disk. Be sure to back up the information you want to keep to an external device.
After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.

  • How can I schedule a restart to SCCM managed computers at a certain time?

    Hi all;
I've been trying to schedule a restart to SCCM 2012R2 managed computers at a certain time with no luck.
    Here is what I did:
Created a new package called “ScheduledReboot”
    Standard Program without Source Packages
I named mine simply “ScheduledReboot”. Set Start In to
c:\windows\system32, and set After Running to Program restarts computer.
My command line is shutdown.exe -r -t 300 -c “Initiating scheduled reboot for system maintenance. You have 5 minutes to save your work before mandatory forced reboot.” This gives a reboot with 5 minutes of lead-time, and displays the
message in quotes to any users who may still be logged in.
Created an advertisement with a mandatory advertisement a little bit into the Maintenance Window. I advertise this to a test collection with 1 PC. Set it to recur every 1 day at 2AM. Changed the Program Run Behavior of the advertisement
    to Always Rerun Program.
However; I get an error and noting happens. I did deploy several Packages to the same PC such as WinZip and other stuff.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

  • How can I set up my macbook air to use programs on my iMac over the internet?

I have a program (MacPractice) on my iMac. It's running the server program while my MacBook Air is running the client software which has to be connected via the wireless (last Gen Time machine) in my office to function. What do I need to do to be able to access my iMac over the internet when I'm out of the office? I was told that I would need to set up a DNS (?) address to log in. I use a Comcast internet modem which goes through my Time Machine wireless router to my iMac. Is this even possible to do with the current setup?

Ok, in this case your iMac will be performing as an application server. As such, it will need to be "reachable" from the Internet. This is typically done in one of two ways: 1) It is assigned a static Public IP address, or 2) It is assigned a static Private IP address.
In the first method, your iMac will be like any other publically available server (Web, E-Mail, etc.) To accomplish this, you would need for your ISP to provide you with a static Public IP. You can then configure the AirPort Extreme to allow remote clients to access this server by creating a DMZ for the server. This would fully expose your iMac to the Internet.
In the second method, you would assign the iMac a static Private IP address that is just outside of the default range of the AirPort's DHCP service. You would then configure the AirPort for port mapping. Which ports that will be needed to be mapped will depend on what your application's support tells you.

  • How can I set the finder window to open the same way every time?

Everytime I open Finder it goes back to it's default view which is just too small, but I want to set the finder columns and window so that they open the same exact way every single time. I'm tired of resizing everything.
Currently I have to resize every window and column everytime and I think my work is much slower then when I was on Windows because of it.
Is there a setting, script, file, patch, anything, is there absolutely anything I can do to actually control the Finder views and make them adjust to MY criteria and stay that way...

That is a big negative. That does absolutely nothing other then close my window, next time the finder window is opened then the column widths are small again.
In Windows Explorer all your windows are customizable, how do I do this with Finder?

  • How can I set up my iPad to Remember my password in App Store for a determined period of time.. Ex: 2 minutes, for updates and purchasing?

Whenever I make purchases on my iPad in the App Store, it asks me for my Apple ID password. I'm fine with this when its a one off purchase, but when I have to make multiple purchases continuously it can be really annoying.
How wow can I get the App Store to remember my password for a short period of time (2-3 minutes) so I don't have to type it in with every purchase? I know it can be done as the other iPad in the house is set up this way, I just can seem to find how or where to change these settings...

There is Settings > General > Restrictions > Require Password which you can set to '15 minutes' - the only other option for the setting is 'Immediately', you won't be able to have it as 2 or 3 minutes.

  • How can I set up two i tunes accounts on the same i mac for different profiles

I have set up two profiles on my new i mac. I now want to access two different i tunes accounts but when downloading the second account I get a message saying the computer is already set up with an apple id and if you download you can not auto download !! for 90 days ??? I don't understand this

Jus don't turn on Autodownload (iTunes prefs > Store).
Autodownload simply tells iTunes to automaticall download items if you purchase them elsewhere (such as a different computer or iPhone/iPad).
You can still download them when your purchase them on the computer or go to iTunes store in iTunes, select Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.

I am trying to open 20-25 files at the same time as Photoshop Raw [*.RAW] files.
The only way I can open multiple files is if i leave the file type as All Formats. When I change it to  Photoshop Raw [*.RAW], the files a deselected.

Use bridge. Select all the files then press ctrl-r or cmd-r to load the selected files into camera raw.
If you try this in Photoshop use File>Open As then for file type choose camera raw. (I have not tested open as for opening multiple files)
