How can I share my external drive?

Hi
I have an imac G5 and an imac intel core duo, each one has an external drive, and they are connected through the network, but I can´t reach my intel core duo´s external drive from my imac G5.
The imac G5 has the tiger OS, the other one has the snow leopard.
Someone knows anything about this?
please help

Hmm.
Is the G5 running Tiger? If so, this applies to Tiger and earlier: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2246
Sorry, but I've never used sharing between Tiger and Snow Leopard, so am not sure what's wrong.

  • How can I repair my external drive?

    Hi!
I was stupid enough to connect my external drive to a windows computer and totally forgot that that this drive was ONLY for mac.
So I connected it to my mac now and it says it wasnt mounted properly and lets me choose either I force it or abort it. So I force it. And it seems that my stuff is there and I havent lost anything.
BUT when I Verify Disc with Disc Utility then it says:
    Verifying volume “Elements”
** No NTFS file system checks have been implemented yet.
** Reporting that the volume is fine without checking anything.
And when I want to repair it, then it says:
    Verify and Repair volume “Elements”
** /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix has been disabled because of volume corruption issues.
** If you still want to try fixing your volume, use /usr/local/bin/ntfsfix from the command line...
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
Please help me how can I fix the damage that I've done to my external drive?

    Thanks for the advice.
I did it. But it says:

  • How can i format an external drive to be used for both windows and mac

i recently bought a macbook pro and used bootcamo so as to be able to run win7 and mac. I now wish to have an external usb drive so as to backup and tranfer files between the two os's. How can I do this?

    Firstly,
There is a forum for MacBook Pro - not this. And for Boot Camp.
    You can:
add Paragon HFS driver to Windows which works
add Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X
USB is of course slow and while people use it for backups and TimeMachine, that is one place where FW800, eSATA or USB3 would be better served.

  • How do I share an external drive between OSX 10.3 and 10.5?

My setup is a external drive (FAT) connected via firewire to an ibook g3 using OSX10.3. I have installed sharepoints on that mac. Now, I can see and use the ibook g3 share on my ibook g4 using OSX10.5 , but not the external drive. I can access the drive through my Windows PC.
I have tried making an alias of the external drive, but that doesn't work. Leopard just says the source to the alias cannot be found.
    Help, thanks!

I don't have any issues connection to a server running 10.4 using sharepoints for the external drives.
try using the server's ip address on your leopard mac
from the finder press command + K and enter the servers ip address. It should then give you a window with all the available sharepoints on that server.

  • I recently bought a new iMac as well as a wireless time capsule and have it connected how can I use this external drive as the location to store all my files for iTunes, or is this even possible?

New iMac user here, I recently bought a new iMac and Time capsule and have the whole network up and running now. I have connected another external HD to the time capsule as well and have a total of 3 TB of storage connected wireless to my new iMac. My question is can I use this location as the default location for iTunes?  I doubt I am gonna run out of room considering the iMac has 1 TB of storage already, but I'd prefer to keep my movies and music off the Mac to keep it running smoothly. If this is possibly, I'd like to do this with iPhoto as well.

I would advise against placing your iTunes library on a Time Capsule.
The Time Capsule is designed as a backup device and not for wireless streaming of video.
Before you do anything more, can I suggest you put into place a reliable, redundant backup strategy.
Unless you are prepared to risk loss of your iTunes library due to a hard drive failure, I would not put iTunes on the Time Capsule.
Leave your iTunes library on your iMac until such time as your internal drive is full. Backup to Time Capsule using Time Machine and create a clone of your internal iMac HD to your external drive.
That's my 2 cents worth. Others may have a different opinion.

  • How do I share the external drive attached to airport extreme with an iPad?

The subject line says it all.

    What model external HD?"
There are some wireless external hard drives that can be used with the iPad.
The Kingston Wi-Drive, which costs $50 for the 16 Gigabyte, and then $30 more for every 16 gigs more. It works by you turning it on and then accessing the files on it from an app that you download on your iDevice. You can access music, movies, and other stuff. No connections or anything, it works like a WiFi connection, you connect to it from the setting on the iPad under wireless networks.
Then there is the Seagate GoFlex, which some would recommend over the Wi-Drive. But this one costs $199 and had 500 Gigabytes of storage. It works the sameway as the Kingston: no wires, runs over its wireless connection. You can actually fit up to 300 HD movies on it.
    Another option:
Expand your iPad's storage capacity with HyperDrive

  • How can I see my external drive again after installing mavericks?

    Hi,
I just upgraded my Mac Book Air to Mavericks and I cannot see my external hard drives any more. The data is still there and can be read on other computers. Regular USB keys are also detected.
What should be done so that the external hard drive become "visible" again with Mavericks?
Thank you very much and regards,

    Hi Niel,
Unfortunately, the box was already checked. I tried to "uncheck" and "check it again", but it still does not work.
    What else can be done?
Thank you very much and regards,

  • Can't share new external drive

We have a Mac Mini which is our media player. I have all the actual media on an external USB drive. The previous drive was failing, so I've now copied everything over to the new drive. The new drive has the same name as the old drive: Media Drive. As far as the Mac Mini itself goes, all is well.
However, we also access the media drive through filesharing from our other Macs. Now with the new drive, it doesn't appear in filesharing. So I went into filesharing. I removed the old Media Drive (it said it couldn't locate it, because of course it's gone). Then I added the new Media Drive. Still it doesn't appear in filesharing.
What's odd is that in the sharing settings for the media drive, I can't set user permissions. All the Read & Write, etc options are grayed out. See attached screenshot.
    Any ideas?

Thanks. Actually, I don't get that checkbox in my machine. The only thing that appears under Sharing & Permissions is "You can read and write." None of those users and privileges, not the "ignore" checkbox.
From spending a couple hours on Apple tech support just now, what I've discovered is "Fat 32." I had never heard of that in 25 years of Mac use, but what I gather is that this is an ancient MS-DOS format, and that my new hard drive remarkably shipped with this ancient format. (I guess I'm lucky they didn't format it for Morse code.) This format apparently does not support Mac filesharing, which is why this isn't working. I was looking for something to save me from copying the files over again (which takes about a week). However, it looks like I need to reformat the new drive in a modern format and then try again.

  • How to re-format an external drive?

I had a G3 iMac with a 160 GB internal drive that was running an earlier version of OS-X. When I installed that drive, there was a limitation that only allowed it to recognize about 120 GB of that drive.
I now have an iMac G5 and want to use the 160 GB drive from the G3 iMac as an external USB drive. When I connect it to the G5 iMac, the drive is recognized, but only shows a total of 120 GB of total space.
How can I reformat this external drive to allow it to recognize the entire 160 GB of space which the newer versions of OS-X now can do?
    Thanks,
    Bart

Thanks! My problem is solved. When I was in Disk Utility, I had been clicking on the partition name in the list on the left side of the window. It wasn't until I clicked on the level above the partition name (which I assume represents the actual hard drive) that the Partition tab became available. Once I could get to the partition window, it was quick and easy to delete the old partition and create a newer one that recognized the whole amount of space on the drive.
    Thanks!

  • External HD connected to Time Capsule via USB, how can I back up this drive to Time Capsule?

I have my itunes media all on an external drive connected directly to Time Capsule via USB.
I plan to share this external drive over the network to share my media, but how can I back up this drive to the Time Capsule?

how can I back up this drive to the Time Capsule?
You will have to do this manually using the Finder, or try a commercial application like Chronosync or Carbon Copy Cloner which might be able to backup a network drive to another network drive. Check with their support folks first before you buy.
If you could connect the external drive directly to a Mac, Time Machine would backup both the Mac and the external hard drive (assuming that the external is formatted correcly to work with Time Machine).

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
