How can I completely wipe the hard drive with out the Mac OS X disc? I don't need any of the info on the computer.
You can't unless you have a bootable system on an external drive you can use. Otherwise, you need either the original disc that came with your computer or a retail copy of Snow Leopard DVD. The latter contains 10.6.3, so your model must be capable of booting from that or an earlier version of OS X.
You can purchase replacement discs from Apple:
Apple Store Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775 or visit online Help for more information.
To contact product and tech support: Apple - Support - Contact Apple Support.
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements. -
How do I share an external hard drive with 3 macs
On my gmac, I have an external hard drive that all my itunes music/videos are being saved to. I would like to give the other macs access to the itunes music but can not seem to network it. I have no problem logging on to any of the three computers and sharing/using folders from each mac but I can not get the other two computers to see my external hard drive. I tried using SharePoints but the issue seems to be that the external hard drive shows up at the "computer" level, whereas the networking shows up at the internal hard drive level. I've searched all over the boards but can't seem to find anything that helps me with this particular situation. I am using a SeaGate external hard drive that is formated as FAT32.
Highlight the Share in Sharepoints>Normal Shares tab. Look down & right for the Windows (SMB) sharing and change it Shared(+). Click Update Share, Share should now show a + under SMB & AFS. Click the Little Show File System Properties button, set users & group, Permission, etc.,Update Share.
That's the basics. -
I am having a problem partitioning an external hard drive with data in it.
When I select the partition, everything is grayed out. I can't add a a partition for some reason. When I asked this question to other people, they told me to select my partition "io" to do it from there.
As you can see, I can't seem to partition it form there either. I ran the Verify Disk utility but the volume came out okay.
Any ideas as to what the problem would be?
Thanks!
LuisSelect the main hard drive entry (topmost one.) Click on the Partition tab. Shrink the existing partition by grabbing the sizing gadget in the bottom right corner and pushing up until you free up enough space for your second partition. Be sure you do not shrink to less than the space currently occupied by your files. Click on the Add[+] button to create a new partition in the free space. Click on the Apply button and wait until the partitioning is completed.

How can I back up a hard drive with another hard drive?
I don't even know what community to post this question.
I have a standard usb 3.0, 4TB hard drive that I store EVERYTHING on (pictures, music, movies, documents). I spent this past summer organizing all of my files from multiple old hard drives and compiling them onto this one. It's very nice and organized now however, after all of this work I don't want to lose my stuff if the hd fails or something happens. So I bought another exact hd to back it up.
Before I do so, I was contemplating if there is any software or a better way than me doing this manually. I can easily copy the contents over and it will be backed up, but what happens if I make a change to my main hard drive i.e. add something or delete something. I would have to keep record of every change I make and do that exact same thing on the backup hard drive.
I'm guessing there's probably a simpler option that I'm just not aware of so that's why I'm coming here. Is there any way to select a hard drive and designate it as a backup for another hard drive so it will do all of that process automatically? I know my iMac has time machine, but I don't really know how that works and that seems to want to backup my desktop computer, which I'm not really interested in doing since I don't really store much on it other than my main programs. I also don't know where it backs things up to. Does it just double up on your current hard drive or have cloud storage or what?
Thanks for any advice.Time Machine will back up the internal drive by default and can be set to back up external ones formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). It can put the data onto a drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or a network storage location, but not Apple's iCloud servers.

How can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?
how can i reformat my external hard drive without loosing any data?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
It's impossible to format a hard drive without losing the data. One thing you can do before formatting is to copy the files from the external drive to your internal drive, and then, format the external drive. After formatting, copy the files to the external drive again, and everything will be as before formatting it -

How to share the entire hard drive with only one group
We want to share our entire hard drive with our staff, plus share Web folders with our customers plus the staff. We'd like our customers to have no permissions at all for the share point at the root of the drive, so it won't even be presented as a volume for them to mount.
The problem is that when we make the root of the drive a share point, we need to give read-only permissions to Everyone, or we break services. Read-only for Everyone makes our drive readable by any of our customers, which is obviously not good. This seems like it would be a common task for anyone running a server with customer folders on it. Is there a way to share the whole drive with our staff, and only our staff? Thanks.First... You are not making your boot drive the share point are you????? Only share an entire drive if the drive is ONLY used for data (not OS).
You need to make mroe than one share point.
You can have one share point which is the Data drive and another share point which is the customer folder within.
You can have share points which exist within share points.

How can get formatted data from hard drive
how can get formatted data from hard drive?
No chance without special tools/knowledge. There are companies that can do it, unless you use multiple format or rewrite data with special erase ustility or unless you have done low level format.
