How can I silence my MacBook without powering it down?

Quick summary
My MacBook is running OS X Mavericks and has an unidentified hardware problem with the optical disc drive that, among other things, causes it to make an annoying sound four times right after each other anytime the MacBook checks if there is a disc inside. When I put my MacBook to sleep by closing the lid, it produces this distinct sound exactly every two hours. I would like to know if anyone can help me silence my MacBook while it is in sleep mode.
Background
The optical disc drive is malfunctioning because of repeated rocking and shaking in the past when I used to transport it on the back of my bike. As a result it doesn't work anymore, it eats my discs (as in: I have a really really hard time getting them out again) and it produces a distinct sound four times in a row whenever my MacBook needs to find out if there is a disc inside. I can live with that, I don't use optical discs anyway, so I only have to cope with the sound during the boot sequence.
Recently I upgraded from OS X Snow Leopard to OS X Mavericks and the same night I was awoken by this very sound. I looked at my alarm clock and unconsciencely made note of the time. Somewhat later, I was awoken again and I noted it was exactly two hours later. To me this was an indication that the MacBook apparently runs some periodic check on the optical disc drive in Mavericks that it did not do in Snow Leopard. Needless to say, I wasn't very pleased with this new feature to wake me up in the middle of the night, ironically when my MacBook is fast asleep...
Possible solutions
As far as my imagination goes right now, I can think of four possible directions to get my night's rest back again:
Shutdown my MacBook.
While this will certainly silence the device, I won't even consider this as I'm not willing to give up the responsiveness typical for a MacBook that is brought out of sleep mode. I'm more likely to throw it away (which, on a side note, would also give me my rest back) then wait for it to power up everytime I want to use it.
Leave my MacBook on.
This might be a good temporary workaround, but since it makes a gentle buzzing sound when it's on, for the long term I'd fancy a solution in which I can put it to sleep without it making any more sound. Plus I'd have to plug the power cable in for the entire night and it's supposed to be bad for the battery lifetime to leave the power cord plugged when it is fully charged.
Fix the optical disc drive.
This is most likely impossible, but if anyone has a suggestion, be my guest!
Disable the periodic check when the MacBook is put to sleep.
This is my most desirable solution, but I have no clue how to achieve this, let alone if anyone knows about this check at all. I mean, most of us don't have weird buzzing optical disc drives in their Apple notebooks, so noone would notice such a periodic check. I don't even know if this is actually the result of a check and not yet another malfunction of the drive.
Remove or disconnect the optical disc drive.
As I said, I can't use the drive anyway so fysically removing or disconnecting it is no problem for me. It's not like there is any warrenty left on this ancient device. Plus I might get to feel like a bomb defuser when deciding whether I have to cut the red or the blue wire.
Anyone got a suggestion?

If you're hearing the optical drive noise after putting the machine to sleep, that means the computer isn't really going to sleep or is going to sleep and waking up for some reason after a couple of hours. There are a few places in System Preferences that could be doing this, but I don't have a Mac with Mavericks on it for reference, just one with Lion, so I'm not sure I can help much!
If you go to the Apple menu in the upper left corner and choose Sleep, what happens? Does the computer go silent and stay that way?
For option 5, and assuming you have a unibody MacBook (one that does not have a removable battery), you could try following this guide for replacing the optical drive, but just stop at step 12 (where you disconnect it from the logic board) and that should stop it from making noises. If there's no power going to it, it should be silent!
I don't know what the machine will do with the drive disconnected, but I can't see any harm coming from it if you feel up to tearing it apart.
~Lyssa
PS - leaving the computer on with the charger plugged in won't do it harm as long as you fully discharge the battery once a month or so and occasionally run it on battery in between. My MacBook spent about 80% of its time plugged in and running for several years, and the battery still gave me 3-4 hours on a single charge!

  • How can I use my Macbook without worsening my arm and hand injuries?

I have had arm and hand injuries i.e. rsi/repetitive strain injuries for the past 3 1/2 years and coordination problems all my life. I have pain after doing too much with my right hand, I have trouble doing anything with my left hand, and I have worse trouble doing anything which requires both hands at once or alternately. I have trouble using touchpads and touchscreens, but the ones on the Mac work all right, as long as I don't enable tapping or complex gestures. I use an external vertical mouse. I don't have trouble with clicking, though I do have trouble with getting to the right spot with small buttons and narrow scrollbars.
I tried dictation to help with writing, but it requires a lot of editing. I don't know whether I should just try to get the hang of dictation or just ignore it. I don't know of anything similar to help with organizing files.
I imported files from an older Mac and an older Linux machine last spring. I had a lot of trouble with the imports, and ended up with a lot of duplicates. I used DupeGuru to clean some out, but DupeGuru itself requires a lot of painful careful selection, and sorting and reorganizing folders requires a lot of painful work.
I made the mistake of trying to import my pictures folder into iPhoto too, I am not sure how to fix that.

One more thing: I have a lot of trouble renaming files, especially in the finder. I have to click and click again, and sometimes it ignores the second click, and sometimes it opens the file or folder, and only sometimes it lets me rename things. I wis there was an easier way, because it is hard.
Select the file, then hit the <return> key.  After you have made your changes, hit the <return> key again.
While the name is in edit mode, you can use up-arrow to move to the front of the name, and the down-arrow to move to the end of the name.

  • PlZ HELP: How can i format a Macbook without the originals cds and results

    Hello
I have a macbook since a couple of years running 10.5.8 OSX. the last months the system is getting a bit slower and since i bought a midi controller which is arriving today i am thinking of making a format. But i havent the original cds. So here are some questions for u mates and plz consider me as a total amateur.
    1. Will a format make the performance of my macbook back to its original state when i bought it, like it is done with a pc format?
    2. I have ordered this: Mac OS X Snow Leopard International 10.6.3 (upgarde from Leopard). will i be able to do a format with that or i have to oder the original cds (i understand that i will loose iLIfe)
    3. I have some programs installed in my macbook and i have some bookmarks i really work with them. so i am thinking of using time mashine before and after format. Should i do that or if i do that then the format thing has no point at cause the macbook will be slow like it is now??
Thank u all for your patience and i really hope u will help me.

Call Apple, givre them your serial number and they will send you the original install disks only charging for shipping & handling. You should always have those.
    1. A re-format will make your Mac volume blank, after re-installing it would be back to original defaults, but it is usually unnecessary, unless you are experiencing insurmountable problems.
    2. Yes, you will be able to format & install. But like I said, you're better off just upgrading.
    3. You should always have a backup either TM or SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner. The value of these cloning apps, is that you can boot from them in case you get into trouble on your main drive.
Before you install run Disk Utility > Verify Disk. If you find errors repair until no errors are found.
    SuperDuper or CarbonCopy Cloner.

how can i purchase a macbook air in Nigeria? apple has no shop in the entire country and independent dealers charge ridiculously sometimes more than double the prices of mac products without guarantee of getting it with required specifications. its sad cos Nigeria has a very large apple market plus phones and most recently ipads especially. its been frustrating trying to get a macbook, even have to wait for when someone will travel out of the country, then you send the person(thats if you have the money at that time). Please somebody help inform apple maybe they can do something about this, its really disappointing.

This is not difficult and you will not have to download from the app store.
your computer has what is called  a recovery partition that came with it.
simply hold cmd+R while you boot up. let go a second after you hear the chime.
you will boot into the recovery partition.
Use disk utlity to format your usb drive and then exit Disk utlity and go to Reinstall Mountain Lion.
it will ask  you which disk you want to install ML onto. Choose your new USB drive.
    easy peasy

Your issue may not have anything to do with your files, it could be a corrupted cache file, reinstalling your OS and files from backup could be overkill and too much work.
Run ALL of the free OnyX's checks, cleaning and maintainence aspects (not the log files) and reboot at the end.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Your machine will act a bit slow until the caches and spotlight are rebuilt, but it should act faster
Your next step is to use OnyX Verify Preferences and "show only corrupt plist" files
If you find some, make a note of their location and remove then to your desktop and reboot and start the programs responsible, reset your preferences.

  • How can I keep my MacBook safe is Apple is no longer supporting Snow Leopard? My MacBook was purchased in 2006 and cannot be upgraded to the newer operating systems.

I have a MacBook which I purchased in 2006. It cannot upgrade to newer operating systems.Since Apple has stopped support to Snow Leopard, how can I keep my MacBook safe? Buying another computer is not an option. Any ideas or suggestions? Many thanks.

Apple still sell, and therefore support, Snow Leopard.
For what it's worth, from my reading of the Snow Leopard EULA (and I would  assume that there is similar language in the EULAs for all other operating systems, as well), I'm not seeing any obligation on the part of Apple to provide Security Updates of any kind, period/full stop. The wording appears to be completely "use at your own risk." I have no idea whether this "use at your own risk" would survive a legal challenge, or if such a legal challenge would depend on whether or not Apple is still selling (or even giving away for free) an OS, or whether local law would, according to this, override the EULA. Perhaps this is why Apple never formally announces EOL or discontinuance of support for an OS. They can always claim that they are still supporting an OS, whether or not in any practical sense, they are. There was even a very late Flashback detection and removal script which Apple issued for 10.5 well after it was clear that they had stopped supporting Leopard. This hardly constituted ongoing support, but perhaps it was to deter the threat of legal action, or maybe it was simply out of benevolence. I don't know.
Besides that, even when Apple was still actively "supporting" Snow Leopard, which I don't think it is any longer, "use at your own risk" would still have applied to a case where Apple may have been late with a patch, or a response, or an adequate response, to a zero-day threat, such as Flashback was, which was constantly evolving. Many thousands were affected by that, and, to my knowledge, at least, there was no legal action directed at Apple throughout or after that episode. If there was any, I don't think it succeeded.

IMovie 11 : how can I put one image without its associated sound on an audio (without its image) ? thanks

    Hi
As iMovie doesn't orient after Time - but only after Video/Photo clips is this not so easy to do.
I use black photos as Dummy clips - and put them into a new project first
then I add the Music I want
Then I drop the Video-clip (that I realy want) ontop of the black dummy photo - Where it's supposed to be - THEN IF advanced tools are selected (in iMovie preferences) there will be a Drop-Down menu and here I can select to do a Cutaway - and select not to add the audio from it (or in wave-form just silence it out)

I bought a used macbook pro from a friend. Software updates are available, but when I try to update, the computer asks for apple id and will only accept the former owner´s. How can I connect my macbook to my apple id?

The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, insert it, then reboot and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

If you are just visiting Singapore, then leave the account as it is. If you have moved there, then view your account using the iTunes app on a Mac or PC and change the country/region to your current location and address. If you do not have a bank card, you can fund your account using iTunes gift cards if available in Singapore.
