If you are using iCloud, you can use automatic downloads to keep purchased apps, songs and books in sync and you can also sync documents (with some apps) contacts, calendars, and notes.

First, the app must be universal...designed for both iPhone/iPad:
Tap App Store.
Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
Tap Updates.
Tap Purchased on the resulting screen.
Locate the app in your Purchased tab.
Tap the download icon.
The app will begin downloading and you'll be taken back to your home screen.

You cannot get around Activation Lock without the oringinal owner disassociating the iPad from their account.

But every time I plug them into iTunes on my Pc all the apps get screwed up. apps disappear etc. I have "sync apps" selected without automatic updates. I'm thinking I should have this unselected, but that does make sense to me. Shouldn't I be able to have one iTunes account and manage each device independently. What settings to do I need to apply to itunes so that every time i plug the devices in they don't get all messed up? thanks in advance

If have separate iCloud accounts and want to keep your all your iCloud data separate, you can create separate user accounts for each of you, then sign into your individual iCloud account within your user account.
If you want to just add both iCloud calendars on your Mac, you can sign into one iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud, then add the second account in System Preferences>Internet Accounts>iCloud and only check Calendars with this second account.

If you Sync it to your computer via itunes you should be able to play them in itunes

The process is just like deleting an unwanted email in your inbox. Simply find the track(s) you don’t want on your iOS 5 device anymore, slide your finger over the track listing to the left or the right to reveal a hidden “delete” button, and then select “delete” and the track is gone. Unfortunately there’s no mass delete option, so those Backstreet Boys songs are gonna have to be deleted one at a time.
